Chapter 9
Flying in my sleep
The dancers swayed and danced to the bellow of a thousandemus. The noise was tremendous. Each bird whooped andscratched its powerful toes on the cold granite in unison.Louder and louder. Oberon began to spin and the birds formeda circle around the young girl. Then silence. Oberon fell to theground and each bird knelt, bowing its head with a chillingreverence.Charlie stepped forward and the emus split the circle to let him
through to his daughter.The suffocating darkness lay upon her like the body of a deadfriend.Charlie picked her up and stood tall gazing skyward.After what seemed an eternity, Corey began to hear a dull hum.Like a train approaching from a great distance.A series of lights flashed from the western horizon and anundefined light appeared above the mountain slowly decendingupon them.

Leisa grabbed Corey by the hand just as they were flattened byan enormous sonic boom.Darkeness fell upon the mountain.
Corey and Leisa awoke in a large dimly lit featureless room.The room, like the inside of a large aircraft hanger was a dullmetalic colour and there was a strange odour that remindedCorey of concrete dust. The air was cold and stale. They wereeach suspended in a kind of hammock. Corey touched the fineweb like filaments that formed his cocoon. It was silky andslightly sticky but with incredible strength and elasticity. Heturned his body towards Leisa half expecting to see a giantspider consuming its meal.“Are you OK Leis?” he said, finding it difficult to speak at firstin the dry air.“Where the hell are we Corey?” she responded.
“Dunno. But the last thing I remember was that terrible noiseand Charlie picking up Oberon from the rock. And the lightabove us.”“I'm sick and tired of being abducted without my wardrobe.You should really learn to choose a better set of friends, Corey.Ones that wear clothes and I can understand. Where's Charlieand Oberon?” she asked as she tried to free herself from thehammock.“I haven't the slightest clue Leis, but first I think we should getout of this bind”.It took a bit of effort but soon Corey had freed himself. Now
just to get down.Without any real stability it was difficult to leap the six footdrop to the floor.Oh well, he thought to himself.
“Here goes nothing”.

Corey hit the floor with a poorly executed thud and thenwalked over to help Leisa down from the intricate weave of web.Once down, they walked over to nearest wall and tracked the
perimeter of the room attempting to find a way out.The wall was completely featureless – no doors or windowsand appeared to be made of a strange material that looked like
polished aluminium. He placed his hand upon it and it was icycold.“Now what?” Leisa protested, feeling the cold and becomingincreasingly frustrated by their prediciment.“I guess we just have to wait and see what happens.”They walked back to the centre of the room below thehammocks and sat down on the floor.For the next few hours the two talked like they had never talked before.Leisa talked about her sweetheart Jimmie and how he never wanted to leave the farm.
“At least you take me places Corey.” she said, holding hishand.“You got that right. I'd just love to know where the fuck we arenow.”Without warning a bright arc of light on the ceiling illuminatedthe room. It was a bright sterile light that was much too brightto see exactly where it was coming from.Startled, they both stood up and looked around the room.In the corner there was something dark on the floor.“What the hell is that?” Leisa said. Her voice trembling fromthe combination of cold and fear.“It wasn't there before, we would have noticed it.”They walked over towards the object.Corey reached down and picked it up.“Another bloody coat. Two of them.”
Leisa looked frightened as Corey unfolded the neatly piled

coats.“I guess it's our ticket out of here”. He said.“Lets put them on together.” Leisa insisted.Corey handed a coat to Leisa.“OK. On the count of three.One. Two. Three.....”
