2011

Scott Luker's Jefferson Challenger Sports Leagues held its 3rd Annual Charity Golf Outing in October 2011. This charity outing was organized at the Crystal Springs Golf Club in the hills of North Jersey. Scott described that Al Costello and Matt Headinton (front) went to warm up at the driving range for their turn. The plethora of prizes for the game were donated by the sponsors of the tournaments that included local businesses and Jefferson families.

The event organizers, other than Scott for 3rd Annual Charity Golf Outing for Challenger Sports Leagues were Paul Dring, Tom DeVries, and Kelly Albertson who took a moment prior to the competition started. Scott Luker described that the Challenger Leagues are a 3 sport organization, which gives an athletic drive to the children with special needs within the region. Approximately 50 youngsters took part in Baseball, Soccer, as well as Basketball, and the main source of funds was the Golf tournament.

Shotgun began at 9 AM with a 7:45 to 8:30 AM check in as well as continental breakfast. The awards and barbecue held at the Crystal Springs Country Club House shortly after the golf outing. Scott told that the participation fee was $150 per golfer that included a draft beer, barbecue lunch, breakfast, door prizes, closest to the pin, long drive, hole in one, and a 50/50 prize.

He informed that the Challenger League has always been running and organizing different sports programs with the help of the Jefferson Township Recreation Department for boys and girls with special needs since 2007. These children with mental or physical challenges have an age between 5 and 18 years. Scott Luker says that the league now offers baseball, basketball, and soccer programs providing these children opportunities to participate in these games with the same equipment as well as rules. They have an advantage of using the buddy system, and these types of programs have therapeutic effects, which strengthen self esteem of children.

Thank You
