SCRIBBLELIVE INSTRUCTIONS

SCRIBBLELIVE INSTRUCTIONS SCRIBBLELIVE FOR WEB PRODUCERS:You would like to cover a live event that is (a) unfolding quickly (b) has the Twitterverse in a tizzy (c) would benefit from user generated content and/or (d) that your reporters are breaking out in the field. ScribbleLive (SL) is a live blogging tool that will allow you to do all of these things.

SL has different levels of permissions:

Writers, unlimited number allowed (this is for reporters, guest contributors etc)

Moderators (can write and moderate)

Editors (can write, moderate, edit, create events, etc)

Administrators (have complete control over the tool, only a couple of these people) There are limited spaces for the editor and admin permissions, so not everyone will have the same access privileges. To start a new event: On your DASHBOARD in SL click CREATE NEW EVENT

Fill out BASIC INFO (event title, description, set moderation level, upload event banner)

Next, CHOOSE A TEMPLATE. Each Global News market has their own template, select the one that corresponds to your event.

After you have selected a template you will get a unique URL for your event (this is the one the public will view) e.g. http://liveblogs.globalnews.ca/Event/Alberta_Budget Next, INVITE YOUR WRITERS/REPORTERS/MODERATORS: Type in the email addresses of the people you want to invite to the event, and click SEND EMAIL

This will send the unique URL to each email address where they can join the event, along with a unique email address that they can send blog posts/photos/videos to. Next, send out info for people to contribute to the blog using their MOBILE DEVICES

The people you invite to your event are able to contribute to the blog, not only by emailing content, but by CALLING in info from their phone (really awesome feature)

To set up this feature go to the MOBILE page for your event.

You will have to assign a new phone number to your event from the drop-down list **NOTE THERE IS A LIMITED QUANTITY OF PHONE NUMBERS AVAILABLE so when you choose your phone number from the list please make sure you are using a number previously assigned to an event that is now CLOSED. Do not take the phone number of an ACTIVE/LIVE event**

Once you have done this you will have a phone number for your event and a list of phone extensions for each person you invited to the event. In order to call in to the blog each reporter will call the event number, followed by their unique extension, leave a message (this will be their audio report, audio from the event, interview with subject etc). Once they are finished they will hang up, and their audio report will automatically go into the blog.

Next, using SL with TWITTER:

You can set up your blog so that certain Twitter accounts get automatically pulled into the blog (Generally we limit this feature to Global News reporters/staff) Make sure that if youre doing this that your reporters know that everything they tweet will be pulled into the blog (b/c of this, sometimes its better to manually pull them in yourself...depends on the live event/coverage)

If you dont want to auto-pull in tweets, you can do it manually while writing on / moderating your blog (if you have sufficient permissions on SL) On your WRITE page you will see a drop-down menu in the top left corner. The default view is STANDARD, but in here you can choose TWITTER LIVE SEARCH. Using this feature you can search twitter hashtags and user names and SL will produce a list of tweets containing your search terms. Just check off the tweets you want to go into the blog.

Ending your live blog. When you want to close down your event click close this event in the top right hand corner of your WRITE page. This will disallow any new posts to go into the blog, and will also reverse the order that the blog appears, with oldest posts appearing first.

Your live blog can therefore have a shelf life as an archive after the coverage has stopped.

SCRIBBLELIVE FOR REPORTERS:

SL offers reporters a chance to go beyond their live hits and packs for their respective newscasts and offer continuous updates to a developing story.

Reporters can offer colour, in-depth information, first-hand accounts of the situation, interviews with people on the scene all from their mobile device.

There are various ways that reporters can use SL:

(1) Tweet from their account and have their tweets automatically ingested into the blog

(2) Email posts/photos/videos to the blog from their phone

(3) Call the blog and leave an audio report

Although the particulars for each live blog will be different, below are the general instructions for contributing to the live blog that each reporter follows when invited to a live blog. These instructions are emailed out to the reporters for each live blog:

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE LIVE BLOG:POST TO THE BLOG VIA EMAIL:

Email posts to [email protected] Please bookmark this email address now so you have it on hand.**PLEASE REMOVE ANY SIGNATURES FROM YOUR EMAIL FOR THE DURATION OF THE EVENT YOU ARE COVERING IF YOU DONT, YOUR PERSONAL INFO WILL GO INTO THE BLOG WITH YOUR POST**POST TO THE BLOG VIA VOICEMAIL:Call this number: 1-877-xxx-xxxxWhen prompted, enter your extension (listed below)Leave your message after the beep.Hang up, and your message will automatically go into the blog. This is a really cool feature, and you can use it for anything from quick updates, to record sounds from the location youre on, to interviewing people on your phoneits great! 6600joe reporter
