We thank You for the many blessings You provide in our lives. As we enter the New Year, we declare our great love for You as we offer our gift of thanks. Help us to rejoice in all the good things You have given us. May our offering to You be a bless- ing to Your church and the people whose lives are impacted by Your love. In Jesus’ precious name we pray. Amen. As We Gather to Grow in God’s Word New Year’s is a time of starting over, of getting a fresh chance to do things right. And that’s certainly something that we receive from Christ on a daily basis. His grace to sinners is what allows us to keep going even after we’ve made a colossal mess of things. But New Year’s is also a time to look ahead to the year to come and to give thanks in advance for the blessings we have yet to receive. This is the practice of firstfruits, and it represents an opportunity to start the year to come on the right foot, with gratitude and thanksgiving for everything that God does for us. Bible Studies FIRST READING: Deuteronomy 26:1-11 1 When you have entered the land the LORD your God is giv- ing you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, 2 take some of the firstfruits of all that you produce from the soil of the land the LORD your God is giv- ing you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name 3 and say to the priest in office at the time, “I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come to the land the LORD swore to our ancestors to give us.” 4 The priest shall take the bas- ket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the LORD your God. 5 Then you shall declare before the LORD your God: “My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous. 6 But the Egyptians mistreated us and made us suffer, subjecting us to harsh labor. 7 Then we cried out to the LORD, the God of our ancestors, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. 8 So the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. 9 He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey; 10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, LORD, have given me.” Place the basket before the LORD your God and bow down before him. 11 Then you and the Levites and the foreigners residing among you shall re- joice in all the good things the LORD your God has given to you and your household. GOSPEL READING: Matthew 6:1-4 [Jesus said,] “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Scripture
