PART II: Information about the School’s Activity/Programme on Education for Disaster Risk Reduction The information of part II from no.1 to 11 should be no longer than eight pages long (A4 type, Arial font, size 11 point). A half to one page A4 of the project summary should be included. 1. Title of the school’s activity/program on Education for Disaster Risk Reduction

    Natural Disaster Preparedness Plan.

    2. Summary of the activity/program (a half to one page A4)

Since the weather nowadays is unpredictable, heavy rain does not necessaries only occurred

during the monsoon season. Therefore, an immediate action needs to be taken to reduce the risk

of disaster from happening in the school. Because of the school’ location itself, it is prone to be

affected by flash flood and soil erosion in no time.

There two main programs has been piloted to reduce the risk of disaster in the school. The

programs conducted are Green Earth Campaign organized by the Environmental Squad and Prime

Cooperation Activity organized by the Parents Teachers Association. Both programs are actually

an annual program started in the end of 2010. So far, these yearly programs achieved the

objectives planned. Moreover, the bond and support from the local government bodies and

companies are crucial to make it as a successful program. Several local bodies and companies are

cooperating with the school to transform the plan into actions.

    3. Background information or reasons why the school initiated this activity/program

The school’s base was actually a hill. So, it was built by flattening the hill. The geographical factor

of the school makes it easily exposed to flash flood especially during the rainy season. In early

2009, flash flood occurred in the school compound that caused the school to be closed on the spot.

The heavy widespread rain the night before led to land inundation. The affected areas were the

main hall and all the drains. The main reason of the flash flood was the overflowing of the rain

water from the nearby surrounding and roads onto the school’s drainage system. Furthermore, the

fast water flow was unstoppable because the drains became shallow and could not carry away a

lot of water. This causes flash flood.

Another risk that the school is facing is soil erosion. This risk is even higher when it rains heavily.

Since the school is considered as a new school, the hillside was not planted by any trees before

this. Therefore, the hillside was exposed to rain and the underlying rocks could not absorb the rain

water. In addition, the topsoil was washed away by fast running water and flowed down the slope.

The soil was splashed downhill which caused deterioration of soil structure.

    4. Objectives/goals of the activity/programme

The first objective is to minimize the soil erosion happened at school especially during the monsoon season. The second objective is to prevent school from experiencing flash flood.

    5. Period of time when this activity/programme was/has been implemented

    October 2010- still on going.

    6. Activities (Short-term actions and strategies of implementation of the short-term actions)

    i) Prime Cooperation Activity

This activity has become an annual activity during the Environment Week in February. The idea to do this activity is brought by the Parents Teachers Association. Fortunately, the participation from the parents is very good. They voluntarily help in bringing the tools such as hoe and chopper. Moreover, the teachers also contribute their energy to clean the drainage system of the school. For the continuity, the students take out the soil from the drain at least once a month in the evening during the recreation time of the hostel. This to ensure that the drains are cleared from any waste and dirt.

ii) Green Earth Campaign The campaign was launched on the 17th of August 2011. As the symbolic of the programme, all the teachers and the committee members of the Parents Teachers Association planted 42 Rhu trees at the hillside near the school’s field. Furthermore, the Kudat Agriculture Department kindly donated the Green Earth Kit where it consists of the tools for planting and organic fertilizer. Before that, the school actually already started planting pineapple trees at the hillside near the main gate since November 2010. Students voluntarily took the young pineapple trees from their house and brought to school to be planted at the school’s pineapple garden. Thus, the pineapples have been harvested in March 2012. The Campaign is a successful one and it can kill two birds with one stone. Not only the earth will be greener, the school could have a side income by selling the pineapples to the community nearby and reduce the risk of soil erosion at the hillside.

    7. Resources used for implementing the activity/program
