Between Past & Future
Seaport. There is nothing quite like it in New York City. With historic buildings lining
cobblestone streets and merchant ships along the East River, it draws visitors and New
Yorkers alike who see it as a vessel of the past and a quaint reminder of an earlier time.
But Seaport is more than a vessel of the past. It is a laboratory of the future: a place that
has time and time again pioneered new ideas and innovations, transforming not only itself,
but the entire city… and indeed the world.
Seaport District
One way or another, Seaport has always been a laboratory of the future. It was here in 1818 that the packet ship “James Monroe” set sail at exactly 10 a.m., becoming the first scheduled departure in history and ushering in a new age, run by the clock.
It was here in the 1860’s that farmers bringing goods to Fulton Market all hours of the day and night first turned New York into a 24-hour city, “the City that never sleeps.”
And it was here in the 1970’s that a pioneering urban-renewal district became the incubator of another new idea: that the modern city could include history by protecting older buildings and mixing preservation with modern construction.
Seaport District Between Past & Future
Today, the future is again taking shape in and around the Seaport. Lower Manhattan is one of the fastest growing commercial and residential neighborhoods in New York. It is an innovative, mixed-use community that is the first true 21st century city.
And at the heart of it all, the Seaport District.
The Howard Hughes Corporation’s plans for the Seaport will bring over 350,000 square feet of distinctive entertainment, preeminent retail brands, local emerging concepts, and curated dining venues.
The district’s historic buildings will be restored and preserved; the new Pier 17 will open up views of the river, the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge; and the 60,000 square foot landscaped Roof Top will set a new benchmark for world-renowned boutique concert and performance venues.
With a commitment to restoration and preservation,
along with the promise of distinctive retail and
entertainment, the Seaport District is once again poised
to reclaim its role as the beacon of the future - and of the extraordinary city of
New York.
