LIMITED TWO YEAR WARRANTY ON CRAFTSMAN POWER MOWER

For two years from date of purchase, when this Craftsman Lawn Mower is maintained,lubricated, and tuned up according to the operating and maintenance instructions inthe owner's manual, Sears will repair free of charge any defect in material or workman-ship.

If this Craftsman Lawn Mower is used for commercial or rental purposes, this warrantyapplies for only 90 days from the date of purchase.

This Warranty does not cover:• Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as rotary mower

blades, blade adapters, beLts, air cleaners and spark plug.• Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bent

crankshafts and the failure to maintain the equipment according to the instructionscontained in the owner's manual.

Warranty service is available by returning the Craftsman power mower to the nearestSears Service Center/Department in the United States. This warranty applies onlywhile this product is used in the United States.

This Warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights whichvary from state to state.

I.GENERAL OPERATION

• Read, understand, and follow allinstructions on the machine and in themanual(s) before starting. Be thor-oughly familiar with the controls andthe proper use of the machine beforestarting.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of thedischarge opening at all times.

• Only allow responsible individuals,who are familiar with the instructions, tooperate the machine.

• Clear the area of objects such asrocks, toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc.,which could be picked up and thrownby the blade.

• Be sure the area is clear of otherpeople before mowing. Stop machine ifanyone enters the area.

• Do not operate the mower whenbarefoot or wearing open sandals.Always wear substantial foot wear.

• Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always lookdown and behind before and whilemoving backwards.

• Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.

• See manufacturer's instructions forproper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessoriesapproved by the manufacturer.

• Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaningthe mower or unclogging the chute.

• Shut the engine (motor) off and waituntil the blade comes to complete stopbefore removing grass catcher.

• Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Do not operate the machine whileunder the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle and walk;never run.

• Disengage the self-propelled mecha-nism or drive clutch on mowers so

equipped before starting the engine(motor).

• If the equipment should start to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine (motor)and check immediately for the cause.Vibration is generally a warning oftrouble.

• Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields whenoperating mower.

II. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slipand fall accidents which can result insevere injury. All slopes require extracaution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, donot mow it.DO:• Mow across the face of slopes: never

up and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.

• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

• Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator could losefooting or balance.

• Do not trim excessively steep slopes.• Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced

footing could cause slipping.II1. CHILDREN

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to themachine and the mowing activity. Neverassume that children will remain whereyou last saw them.• Keep children out of the trimming area

and under the watchful care of anotherresponsible adult.

• Be alert and turn machine off if childrenenter the area.

• Before and while walking backwards,look behind and down for smallchildren.

• Never allow children to operate themachine.

• Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

IV. SERVICE

• Use extra care in handling gasolineand other fuels. They are flammableand vapors are explosive.-Use only an approved container.-Never remove gas cap or add fuelwith the engine running. Allow

engine to cool before refueling. Donot smoke.

-Never refuel the machine indoors.- Never store the machine or fuelcontainer inside where there is anopen flame, such as a water heater.

• Never run a machine inside a closedarea.

• Never make adjustments or repairswith the engine (motor) running.Disconnect the spark plug wire, andkeep the wire away from the plug toprevent accidental starting.

• Keep nuts and bolts, especially bladeattachment bolts, tight and keepequipment in good condition.

• Never tamper with safety devices.Check their proper operation regularly.

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orother debris build-up. Clean oil or fuelspillage. Allow machine to cool beforestoring.

• Stop and inspect the equipment if youstrike an object. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.

• Never attempt to make wheel heightadjustments while the engine (motor) isrunning.

• Grass catcher components are subjectto wear, damage, and deterioration,which could expose moving parts orallow objects to be thrown. Frequentlycheck components and replace withmanufacturer's recommended parts,when necessary.

• Mower blades are sharp and can cut.Wrap the blade(s) or wear gloves, anduse extra caution when servicing them.

• Do not change the engine governorsetting or overspeed the engine.

Read these instructions and this manualin its entirety before you attempt toassemble or operate your new lawnmower.IMPORTANT: This lawn mower isshipped WITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE inthe engine.Your new lawn mower has been as-sembled at the factory with the exceptionof those parts left unassembled forshipping purposes. All parts such as nuts,washers, bolts, etc., necessary to com-plete the assembly have been placed inthe parts bag. To ensure safe and properoperation of your lawn mower, all partsand hardware you assemble must betightened securely. Use the correct toolsas necessary to ensure proper tightness.

TO REMOVE LAWN MOWER FROMCARTON

1. Remove loose parts included withmower.

2. Cut down two end corners of cartonand lay end panel down flat.

3. Remove all packing materials exceptpadding between upper and lowerhandle and padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

4. Roll lawn mower out of carton andcheck carton thorougly for additionalloose parts.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR LAWNMOWERTO UNFOLD HANDLE

IMPORTANT: Unfold handle carefully soas not to pinch or damage control cables.1. Raise handles until lower handle

section locks into place in mowingposition.

2. Remove protective padding, raiseupper handle section into place onlower handle and tighten both handleknobs.

3. Remove handle padding holdingoperator presence control bar toupper handle.

Your lawn mower handle can be adjustedfor your mowing comfort. Refer to "AD-JUST HANDLE" in the Service andAdjustments section of this manual.

Sears rotary walk-behind power lawn mowers conform to the safety standards of theAmerican National Standards Institute and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commis-sion. The blade turns when the engine is running.

HOW TO USE YOUR LAWN MOWERENGINE CONTROL

The engine is controlled by a throttlecontrol located on the side of the upperhandle. CHOKE position is for starting acold engine and FAST position is forstarting a warm engine and normaloperation. The engine speed is not

ENGINE ZONE CONTROL

_I_.CAUTION: Federal regulations requirean engine control to be installed on thislawn mower in order to minimize the riskof blade contact inju_. Do not under anycircumstances attempt to defeat thefunction of the operator control. The bladeturns when the engine is running.• Your lawn mower is equipped with an

operator presence control bar whichrequires the operator to be positionedbehind the lawn mower handle to startand operate the lawn mower.

DRIVE CONTROL

• Self-propelling is controlled by holdingthe operator presence control bar downto the handle and pulling the drivecontrol lever rearward to the handle.The farther toward the handle the leveris pulled, the faster the unit will travel.

• Forward motion will stop when eitherthe operator presence control bar ordrive control lever are released. Tostop forward motion without stoppingengine, release the drive control leveronly. Hold operator presence controlbar down against handle to continuemowing without self-propelling.

NOTE: If after releasing the drive controlthe mower will not roll backwards, pushthe mower forward slightly to disengagedrive wheels.• To keep drive control engaged when

turning comers, push down on thehandle to lift the front wheels off the

DRIVE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT

Over time, the drive control system maybecome "loose", resulting in decreasedspeed. There is a button on the under-side of the drive control housing toincrease tension on the drive cable.Proceed as follows:1. Turn unit off and disconnect spark

plug wire from spark plug.2. Pull drive control lever all the way

back to the handle.3. Push button on underside of drive

control. While holding button in,return drive control lever to disen-gaged position.

4. Release button.5. Operate mower to test drive speed. If

condition becomes worse after theabove steps (forward speed hasbecome slower), your system was not"loose". Repeating the above stepswill return your unit to the properadjustment and speed.

6. If condition fails to improve after theabove steps (forward speed remainsthe same), your drive belt is worn andshould be replaced.

TO ADJUST cu'n'ING HEIGHT

Raise wheels for tow cut and lowerwheels for high cut, adjust cutting heightto suit your requirements. Mediumposition is best for most lawns.• To change cutting height, squeeze

adjuster lever toward wheel. Movewheel up or down to suit your require-ments. Be sure all wheels are in thesame setting.

NOTE: Adjuster is properly positionedwhen plate tab inserts into hole in lever.Also, 9-position adjusters (if so equipped)allow lever to be positioned between the

7 plate tabs.

TO EMPTY GRASS CATCHER

1. Lift up on grass catcher using theframe handle.

2. Remove grass catcher with clippingsfrom under lawn mower handle.

3. Empty clippings from bag using bothframe handle and bag handle.

NOTE: Do not drag the bag whenemptying; it will cause unnecessary wear.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

ADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see "ENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.• 1,CAUTION: DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke on startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level and area

around oil fill is clean.

2. Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.Make sure that rim of spout is clean.

3. You receive a container of oil with the

unit. Slowly pour 3/4 (12 oz,) of the oilfrom the container down the oil fillspout into the engine.

4. Wait one minute to allow oil to settle.Use guage on oil fill cap/dipstick forchecking level. Insert dipstick into thetube and rest the oil fill cap on thetube. DO NOT thread the cap into thetube when taking reading.

5. Continue adding small amounts of oiland rechecking the dipstick until itreads full. DO NOT overfill, or enginewill smoke on startup.

6. Always be sure to retighten oil dipstickbefore starting engine.

• Check oil level before each use. Addoil if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.

• Change the oil after every 25 hours ofoperation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more oftenunder dusty, dirty conditions.

ADD GASOLINE• Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler

neck. Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean,regular unleaded gasoline with aminimum of 87 octane. Do not mix oilwith gasoline. Purchase fuel inquantities that can be used within 30

_ldays to assure fuel freshness.CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil or

fuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame._1=CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels(called gasohol or using ethanol ormethanol) can attract moisture whichleads to separation and formation ofacids during storage. Acidic gas candamage the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should beemptied before storage of 30 days orlonger. Drain the gas tank, start theengine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

TO START ENGINE

NOTE: Due to protective coatings on theengine, a small amount of smoke may bepresent during the initial use of theproduct and should be considerednormal.1. Be sure fuel valve is in the ON

position.2. To start a cold engine, move handle

mounted throttle/choke control lever toCHOKE position.

3. Hold operator presence control bardown to the handle and pull starterhandle quickly. Do not allow starterrope to snap back.

4. Slowly move throttle control lever toFAST position after engine starts.

• To start a warm engine, move throttlecontrol lever to FAST position, thenfollow steps above.

TO STOP ENGINE

To stop engine, release operatorpresence control bar. Wait until bladeand all moving parts have stopped andturn fuel valve to OFF position if you donot intend to restart the engine soon.

MOWING TIPS

• Under certain conditions, such as verytail grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of grassclippings. It may also be necessary toreduce ground speed and/or run themower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and mostcutting conditions, the engine speedshould be set in the FAST position.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers canbecome filled with dirt and dust withuse and catchers will collect less grass.To prevent this, regularly hose catcheroff with water and let dry before using.

• Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass c)ippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow andextend engine life.

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-upgrass and trash. See "CLEANING" in theMaintenance section of this manual.• The special mulching blade will recut

the grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the _awn they will disperse into thegrass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quicklyto provide nutrients for the lawn.Always mulch with your highest engine(blade) speed as this will provide thebest recutting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried and the newly cut area will not beexposed to the direct sun.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. If the lawn is overgrown itwill be necessary to raise the height ofcut to reduce pushing effort and to keepfrom overloading the engine andleaving clumps of mulched grass. Forextremely heavy grass, reduce yourwidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• Certain types of grass and grassconditions may require that an area bemulched a second time to completelyhide the clippings. When doing asecond cut, mow across or perpendicu-lar to the first cut path.

• Change your cutting pattern from weekto week. Mow north to south one weekthen change to east to west the nextweek. This will help prevent matting

10 and graining of the lawn.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this lawn mower doesnot cover items that have been subjectedto operator abuse or negligence, Toreceive full value from the warranty,operator must maintain mower asinstructed in this manual, Some adjust-ments will need to be made periodicallyto properly maintain your unit.All adjustments in the Service andAdjustments section of this manualshould be checked at least once eachseason.• Once a year, replace the spark plug,

clean or replace air filter element andcheck blade for wear. A new sparkplug and clean/new air filter elementassure proper air-fuel mixture and helpyour engine run better and last longer.

• Follow the maintenance schedule inthis manual.

IMPORTANT: Do not oil or greaseplastic wheel bearings. Viscouslubricants will attract dust and dirt thatwill shorten the life of the self-lubricat-ing bearings. If you feel they must belubricated, use only a dry, powderedgraphite type lubricant sparingly,

BLADE CARE

For best results, mower blade must bekept sharp. Replace bent or damagedblades.

TO REMOVE BLADE

1. Disconnect spark plug wire from sparkplug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with spark plug.

2. Turn lawn mower on its side. Make

sure air filter and carburetor are up.3. Use a wood block between blade and

mower housing to prevent blade fromturning when removing blade bolt.

NOTE: Protect your hands with glovesand/or wrap blade with heavy cloth.4. Remove blade bolt by turning counter-

clockwise,5. Remove blade and attaching hard-

ware (bolt, lock washer and hardenedwasher).

NOTE: Remove the blade adapter andcheck the key inside hub of bladeadapter. The key must be in good condi-tion to work properly. Replace adapter ifdamaged.

TO REPLACE BLADE

1. Position the blade adapter on theengine crankshaft. Be sure key inadapter and crankshaft keyway arealigned.

2. Position blade on the blade adapteraligning the two (2) holes in the bladewith the raised lugs on the adapter.

3. Be sure the trailing edge of blade

(opposite sharp edge) is up towardthe engine.

4. Install the blade bolt with the lockwasher and hardened washer into

blade adapter and crankshaft.5. Use block of wood between blade and

lawn mower housing and tighten theblade bolt, turning clockwise.

• The recommended tightening torque is35-40 ft. Ibs.

GRASS CATCHER

• The grass catcher may be hosed withwater, but must be dry when used.

• Check your grass catcher often fordamage or deterioration. Throughnormal use it will wear. If catcher needs

replacing, replace only with a manufac-turer approved replacement catcher.Give the lawn mower model numberwhen ordering.

DRIVE WHEELSCheck front drive wheels each timebefore you mow to be sure they movefreely.The wheels not turning freely meanstrash, grass cuttings, etc. are in the drivewheel area and must be cleaned to freedrive wheels.If necessary to clean the drive wheels, besure to clean both front wheels.1. Remove hubcaps, hairpin cotters and

washers.2. Remove wheels from wheel adjusters.3. Remove any trash or grass cuttings

from inside the dust cover, pinion and/or drive wheel gear teeth.

4. Put wheels back in place.NOTE: If after cleaning, the drive wheelsdo not turn freely, contact a Sears or otherqualified service center.

GEAR CASE

• To keep your drive system workingproperly, the gear case and areaaround the drive should be kept cleanand free of trash build-up. Clean underthe drive cover twice a season.

• The gear case is filled with lubricant tothe proper level at the factory. The onlytime the lubricant needs attention is ifservice has been performed on thegear case.

• If lubricant is required, use only TexacoStarplex Premium 1 Grease, Part No.750369. Do not substitute.

ENGINELUBRICATION

Use only high quality detergent oil ratedwith API service classification SF-SJ.Select the oil's SAE viscosity gradeaccording to your expected operatingtemperature.

TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower todrain oil, drain fuel tank by runningengine until fuel tank is empty.1. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark

plug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with spark plug.

2. Remove engine oil cap; lay aside on aclean surface.

3. Tip lawn mower on its side as shownand drain oil into a suitable container.Rock lawn mower back and forth toremove any oil trapped inside ofengine.

4. Wipe off any spilled oil from lawnmower or side of engine.

5. Fill engine with oil. (See "ADD OIL" inthe Operation section of this manual).

6. Reconnect spark plug wire to sparkplug.

Your engine will not run properly and maybe damaged by using a dirty air filter.Replace the air filter every 100 hours ofoperation or every season, whicheveroccurs first. Service air cleaner moreoften under dusty conditions.

TO CLEAN AIR FILTER1. Remove cover.2. Carefully remove cartridge.3. Clean by gently tapping on a flat

surface. If very dirty, replace cartridge.ACAUTION: Petroleum solvents, suchas kerosene, are not to be used to cleancartridge. They may cause deterioration ofthe cartridge. Do not oil cartridge. Do notuse pressurized air to clean or drycartridge.4. Install cartridge, then replace cover.

CLEANING

mower by scraping to remove build-upof grass and trash.

• We do not recommend using a gardenhose to clean lawn mower unless theelectrical system, muffler, air filter andcarburetor are covered to keep waterout. Water in engine can result inshortened engine life.

CLEAN UNDER DRIVE COVERClean under drive cover at least twice aseason. Scrape underside of cover withputty knife or similar tool to remove anybuild-up of trash or grass on underside ofdrive cover.

LAWN MOWER

When lawn mower is to be stored for a

period of time, clean it thoroughly, removeall dirt, grease, leaves, etc. Store in aclean, dry area.1. Clean entire lawn mower (See

"CLEANING" in the Maintenancesection of this manual).

2. Lubricate as shown in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.

3. Be sure that all nuts, bolts, screws,and pins are securely fastened.Inspect moving parts for damage,breakage and wear. Replace ifnecessary.

4. Touch up all rusted or chipped paintsurfaces; sand lightly before painting.

You can fold your lawn mower handle forstorage.1. Squeeze the bottom ends of the lower

handle toward each other until thelower handle clears the handlebracket, then move handle forward.

2. Loosen upper handle mounting boltsenough to allow upper handle to befolded back.

FUEL SYSTEM

IMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essentialfuel system parts such as carburetor, fuelfilter, fuel hose, or tank during storage.Also, alcohol blended fuels (calledgasohol or using ethanol or methanol)can attract moisture which leads to

separation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage.1. Drain the fuel tank.2. Start the engine and let it run until the

fuel lines and carburetor are empty.• Never use engine or carburetor cleaner

products in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next season.

NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank orstorage container. Always follow the mixratio found on stabilizer container. Runengine at least 10 minutes after addingstabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach

the carburetor. Do not drain the gas tankand carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OIL

Drain oil (with engine warm) and replacewith clean engine oil. (See "ENGINE" inthe Maintenance section of this manual).

1. Remove spark plug.2. Pour one ounce (29 ml) of oil through

spark plug hole into cylinder.3. Pull starter handle slowly a few times

to distribute oil.4. Replace with new spark plug.

OTHER

• Do not store gasoline from one seasonto another.

• Replace your gasoline can if your canstarts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in yourgasoline will cause problems.

• If possible, store your unit indoors andcover it to protect it from dust and dirt.

• Cover your unit with a suitable protec-tive cover that does not retain moisture.Do not use plastic. Plastic cannotbreathe, which allows condensation toform and will cause your unit to rust.

I. OPERACION• Antes de empezar, debe familiadzaree

Lea estas instrucciones y el manualcompletamente antes de tratar de montar uoperar su segadora nueva.IMPORTANTE: Este cortacesped viene SINACEITE O GASOLINA en el motor.Su segadora nueva ha sido montada en lafdbrica con la excepci6n de aque]las partesque se dejaron sin montar pot razones deenvfo. Todas las partes come las tuercas, lasarandelas, los pernos, etc., que sonnecesarias para completar el montaje hart sidocolocadas en la bolsa de partes. Paraasegurarse que su segadora funcione enforma segura y adecuada, todas las partes ylos artfculos de ferreterfa que se montentienen que ser apretados seguramente. Uselas herramientas correctas, come seanecesario, para asegurar que se aprietenadecuadamente.PARA REMOVER LA SEGADORA DELA CAJA DE CARTON1. Remueva las partes sueltas que se

incluyen con la segadora.2. Corte las dos esquinas de los extremos de

la caja de cart6n y tienda el panel delextremo piano.

3. Remueva todo el material de empaque,excepto la cuSa entre el mango supedor y61 inferior, y la cuSa que sujeta la barra delos control que exige la presencia deloperador junto con el mango superior.

4. Haga rodar la segadora hacia afuera de lacaja de cart6n y revfsela cuidadosamentepara verificar si todavia quedan partessueltas adicionales.

COMO PREPARAR SU SEGADORAPARA DESDOBLAR EL MANGOIMPORTANTE: Despliegue el mango conmucho cuidado para no pellizcar o da_ar loscables de control.1. Levante los mangos hasta que la secci6n

del mango inferior se asegure en su lugar,en la posici6n para segar.

2. Remueva la cuha protectora, levante lasecci6n del mango superior hasta su lugaren el mango inferior, y apriete ambasmanillas del mango.

3. Remueva la cuSa del mango que sujeta labarra de los control que exige la presenciadel operador junto con el mango superior.

El mango de la segadora puede ajustarseseglfin te acomode para segar. Refi_rase a"AJUSTE DEL MANGO" en la Secci6n deServicio y Ajustes de este manual.

La operaci6n de cualquier

Siempre use anteojos de seguridad oproteccibn para los ojos mientras opere susegadora o cuando haga ajustes oreparaciones. Recomendamos galas o unamascara de seguridad do visibn amplia deseguridad usada sobre las galas.COMO USAR SU SEGADORACONTROL DEL MOTORLa motor se controla por medio de un controlde aceleraci6n ubicado en el lado del mangosuperior. La posici6n de ESTRANGULACIONso usa para hacer arrancar el motor ffio, laposici6n de R,&,PIDOes para hacer arrancarel motor caluroso y el operaci6n normal. Lavelocidad del motor no se puede ajustar.

CONTROL DE ZONA DEL MOTOR_LPRECAUCI6N: Las regulaciones federalesexigen que se instale un control para el motoren esta segadora para reducir a un mfnimo elriesgo de lesionarse debido al contacto con lacuchilla. Por ningL_nmotivo trate de eliminar lafunci6n del control del operador. La cuchiltagira cuando el motor esta funcionando.• Su segadora viene equipada con una barra

de controles que exigen la presencia deloperador, Io que requiere que el operadorestb detr_s del mango de la segadora parahacerla arrancar y operarla.

CONTROL DE LA IMPULSI(_N• La autopropulsi6n se controla manteniendo

la palanca de mando operador presenteabajo hacia el mango y tirando la palanca deaccionamiento atr_s hacia el mango. Cuantom&s lejos se tira la palanca hacia el mango,m_.s r&pida ira la unidad.

• El movimiento hacia adelante so detienecuando sea la palanca do mando operadorpresente o la palanca de accionamiento sesueltan. Para detener el movimiento haciaadelante sin apagar el motor,soltar s61o lapalanca de accionamiento. Mantener lapalanca de mando operador presente abajocontra el mango para continuar a cortar sinautopmpulsi6n.

AVISO: Si despu_s haber desenganchado dela palanca de control, la segadora no rodahacia atr&s, empuje la segadora un poco haciaadelante para desenganchar las ruedas de laimpulsi6n.• Para mantener el mando conectado cuando

se da la vuelta a una esquina, empujar elmango para levantar las ruedas delanterasdel terreno mientras se gira la cortadora.

PAPABot6n ajuste ENGANCHAR EL CONTROL DE LA(en la parle CONTROL DELA IMPULSI6Ntrasera) IMPULSI6N DESENGANCHADO

AJUSTE DEL MANDOOcasionalmente, el sistema de mando puede"aflojarse", provocando una disminuci6n de lavelocidad. Hay un bot6n en la pane trasera dela sede del mando para apretar la tensi6n delcable. Proceder de la siguiente manera:1. Apagar la unidad y desconectar el cable

de bujfa de la bujfa.2. Tirar la palanca de accionamiento todo

atrds hacia el mango.3. Empujar el bot6n en la parte trasera del

mando. Con el bot6n apretado, revuelva lapalanca de controles del mecanismoimpulsor a la posici6n desenganchada.

4. Soltar el bot6n.5. Opere la segadora para probar la

velocidad del mecanismo. Si tras los pasosdescdtos arriba la situaci6n se empeora(la velocidad de avance ha disminuido), elsistema no estaba =aflojado". Repitiendolos pasos de arriba se vueIve la unidad alajuste y velocidad correctos.

6. Si las condiciones no mejoran despuds delos pasos descritos (la velocidad haciaadelante queda la misma), la correa detransmisi6n esta desgastada y tiene queset sustituida.

PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTELevante las ruedas para el cone bajo y bajelas ruedas para el corte alto., ajuste la alturade corte para que se acomode a susrequisitos, La posici6n del medio es la mejorpara la mayofia de los c_spedes.• Para cambiar la altura de cone. empuje la

palanca del ajustador hacia la rueda. Muevala rueda hacia arriba o hacia abajo de modoque se acomode a sus requisitos.Aseg_rese que todas las ruedas quedenigualmente ajustadas.

AMISO: El ajustador esta correctamentecolocado cuando las orejas de la placa est_ninsenadas en el agujero del mango. Tambi_n,los ajustes de 9-posiciones (si equipado)permiten que el mango pueda ser movidoentre las orejas de la placa.

PARA VAClAR EL RECOGEDOR DEClaSPED1. Levante el recogedor de c_sped usando el

mango del bastidor.2. Remueva el recogedor de c6sped, con los

3. Vac{e los recortes de la bolsa usandotanto el mango del bastidor como 61de labolsa.

ANTES DE HACER ARRANCAR ELMOTORAGREGUE ACEITESu segadora fue enviada sin aceite en elmotor. Para el tipo y el grado del aceite autilizar, yea e! "MOTOR" en la secci6n delMantenimiento de este manual._qI,PRECAUCI6N: NO sobrellene el motor conaceite, o fumard cuando Io valla a arrancar.1, Asegerese que la segadora est6 nivelada

y que el area alrededor del dep6sito deaceite este limpia.

2, Remueva la varila medidora de aceite deltubo de desarga de aceite. Asegdrese queel borde del tubo de relleno de aceite estelimpio.

3. Usted recibe un envase de aceite con launidad. Vierta lentamente 3/4 (12 onzas)de aceite en el tubo de relleno del motor.

4. Permita que el aceite se asiente. Use unmedidor en la tapa/varilla indicadora delnivel para relleno del aceite para revisar elnivel. Inserte la varilla indicadora de nivelen el tubo, y haga descansar la tapa deldep6sito para relleno del aceite en el tuboal leer las medidas. NO enrosque el tap6ncuando este tomando una lectura.

5. ContinL_e agregando cantidades pequeasde aceite y vuelva a inspeccionar la varillamedidora hasta que lea Ileno (FULL). NOsobrellene el motor con aceite, o fumaracuando Io valla a arrancar.

6. Aseg6rese de apretar la varilla medidoradel aceite antes de arrancar el motor.

• Revise el nivel del aceite antes de cada uso.Agregue aceite si es necesario. Llene hastala Ifnea de Ileno en la varilla medidora denivel.

• Cambie el aceite despu6s de 25 horas deoperaci6n o una vez pot temporada. Puede

necesitar cambiar el aceite mds a menudocuando las condiciones son polvorosas osucias.

AGREGUE GASOLINA• Uene el estanque de combustible hasta la

parte inferior del cuello de relleno de!estanque de gasolina. No Io Ilenedemasiado. Use gasolina regular, sinplomo, nueva y limpia con el minimo de 87octanos. No mezcle el aceite con lagasolina. Para asegurar que la gasolinautilizada sea fresca compre estanques loscuales puedan ser utilizados durante los

_kpdmeros 30 .dfas.PRECAUClON: Limpie el aceite o el

combustible derramado. No almacene,derrame o use gasolina cerca de una llamaexpuesta._-PRECAUCI(_N: Los combustiblesmezclados con alcohol (conocidos comogasohol, o el uso de etanol o metanol) puedenatraer la humedad, la que conduce a laseparaci6n y formaci6n de 6cidos durante elalmacenamiento. La gasolina acidica puededa_ar el sistema del combustible de un motordurante el almacenamiento. Para evitar losproblemas con el motor, se debe vaciar elsistema del combustible antes de guardarJopor un perlodo de 30 dfas o rods. Vacle elestanque del combustible, haga arrancar elmotor y hagalo funcionar hasta que las lineasdel combustible y el carburador quedenvacios. La pr6xima temporada usecombustible nuevo. Vea las Instrucciones ParaEl Almacenamiento para mds in|ormaci6n.Nunca use productos de limpieza para elmotor o para el carburador en el estanque delcombustible pues se pueden producir daSospermanentes.

PARA HACER ARRANCAR EL MOTORAVISO: Debido alas capas protectoras delmotor, una cantJdadpequeSa de humo puedeestar presente durante el uso inicial delproducto y se debe considerar normal.1. Asegurase que vdlvula del combustible

estd en la posici6n ON.2. Para hacer arrancar un motor fifo, mueva

la palanca de control de aceleraci6n/estrangulaci6n, montada en el mango, a laposici6n de ESTRANGULACI6N.

3. Sujete la barra de controles que exigen lapresencia del operador abajo en el mangoy tire el mango del arrancadorrdpidamente. No permita que el cord6narrancador se devuelva abruptamente.

4. Lentamente mueva la palanca de .controlde aceleraci6n a la posici6n de RAPIDO,despuds de que arranque el motor.

• Para empezar el motor, mueva la palancade control de acceleraci6n a la posici6n deR/_PIDO y despu_s siga los pasosanteriores.

PARA PARAR EL MOTOR• Para parar el motor y si no intenta ponerlo

en marcha de nuevo, alivie la barra decontrol que exige la presencia del operador.Espere hasta que la cuchilla y todas laspiezas m6viles se hallan parado y mueva lavdlvula del combustiblea la posicion OFF.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR• Bajo ciertas condiciones, tal como c_sped

muy alto, puede ser necesario el elevar laaltura del code para reducir el esfuerzonecesario para empujar la segadora y paraevitar sobrecargar el motor, dejandomontones de recortes de cesped. Puedeque sea necesario reducir la velocidad delrecorrido y/o haga funcionar la segadorasobre el &tea per segunda vez.

• Para un cone muy pesado, reduzca elancho del corte pasando parcialmente porencima del lugar anteriormente cortado ysiegue lentamente.

• Para un mejor ensacado del cdsped y parala mayoria de las condiciones de corte, lavelocidad del motor debe ajustarse a laposici6n de R/_PIDO.

• Los poros en los recogedores de c_spedde tela pueden nenarse con mugre y polvocon el uso y los recogedores recaudardnmenos cdsped. Para evitar dste, roefe e!recogedor con la manguera de aguaregularmente y d6jelo secarse antes deusarlo.

• Mantenga la parte superior del motor,alrededor del arrancador, despejada y sinrecortes de cdsped y paja. Esto ayudaff, elflujo del aire del motor y extenderd suduraci6n.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR YACOLCHARIMPORTANTE: Para obtener el mejorrendimiento mantenga la caja de la segadorasin acumulacion de cesped y basura. Vea"LIMPIEZA" in la seccion Mantenimiento deeste manual.• La cuchilla acolchadora especial va a volver

a cortar los recortes de c_sped muchasveces, y los reduce en tamaSo, de modoque si se caen en el cdsped se van adispersar entre _ste y no se van a notar.Tambi_n, el cdsped acolchado se va adeshacer rdpidamente entregandosubstancias nutritivas para el c6sped.Siempre acolche con la velocidad del motor(cuchilla) m_,s alta, pues asf se obtendrd lamejor acci6n de recorte de las cuchillas.

• Evite cortar el cdsped cuando est_ mojado.El c_sped mojado tiende a format montonese interfiere con la acci6n de acolchado. Lamejor hora para segar el c_sped estemprano en la tarde. A esa hora _ste se hasecado y el _rea reci_n cortada no quedardexpuesta al sol directo.

• Para obtener los mejores resultados, ajustela altura del corte de la segadora de modoque _sta corte solamente el tercio superiorde las hojas de c_sped. En el caso de queel c_sped haya crecido demasiado, puedeser necesario el elevar la altura del cortepara reducir el esfuerzo necesario paraempujar la segadora y para evitarsobrecargar el motor, dejando montones derecortes de cdsped. Para un c_sped muypesado, reduzca el ancho del cortepasando por encima del lugar anteriormentecortado y siegue lentamente.

• Ciertos tipos de c_sped y sus condicionespueden exigir que un Area tenga que seracolchada por segunda vez para escondercompletamente los recortes. Cuando sehaga el segundo code, siegue atravesado oen forma perpendicular a la pasada delprimer cone.

• Cambie su patr6n de corte de semana asemana. Siegue de norte a sur una semanay luego cambie de este a oeste la pr6ximasemana. Esto evitar_l que el c6sped se

27 enrede y cambie de direcci6n.

CUIDADO DE LA CUCHILLAPare obtener los mejores resultados, lacuchilla de la segadora tienen qua mantenerseafilada. Cambie la cuchilla doblada o dahada.PARA REMOVER LA CUCHILLA

1. Desconecte el alambre de la bujia yp6ngalo en donde no pueda entrar encontacto con 6sta.

2. Haga descansar la segadore en su lado.Aseg_rese que el flltre de aim y qua elcarburedor queden mirando hacia arriba.

3. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora para evitar qua laeuchilla gire cuando sele quite el pemo.

AVISO: Proteja sus manos con guantes y/oenvuelva la cuchilla con una tela gruesa.4. Remueva el perno de la cuchilla gir_ndolo

en el sentido contrario en qua giran lasmanillas del reloj.

5. Remueva la cuchilla y los articulos deferreterfa adjuntadores (el perno, laarandela de seguridad y la arandelaendurecida).

AVISO: Remueva el adaptador de la cuchilla yrevise el cubo interior de la ranura deladaptador de la cuchilla. La ranura tiene quaestar en buenas condiciones para quafuncione en forma adecuada. Cambie eladaptador siesta da_ado.PARA CAMBIAR LA CUCHILLA

1. Ponga el adaptador de la cuchilla en elcigueSal del motor. Aseg_rese qua laranura del adaptador y que el chaveterodel cigueSal est6n alineados.

2. Ponga la cuchilla en el adaptador de _staalineando los dos (2) agujeres en lacuehilla con laa salientes efevadas en eladaptador.

3. Aseg_rese de que el borde de salida de lacuchilla (opuesto al borde afilado) est6hacia arriba hacia el motor.

4. Instale el pemo de la cuchilla con laarandela de seguridad y la arandelaendurecida en el adaptador de la cuchilla yel cigueSal.

5. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora y apriete el pernode la ouchillagir_,ndoloen el sentido enque giran las manillas del reloj.

• La torsi6n para apretar recomendada es de35 - 40 pies libras.

IMPORTANTE: El pemo de la cuchilla esclase 8 tratado a calo.PARA AFILAR LA CUCHILLAAVISO: No recomendamos el afilar la cuchilla- pero si !o hace, asegdmse de que quedebalanceada.Se tiene qua tener cuidado de mantenedabalanceada. Una cuchilla qua no est_balanceada va a producir eventualmente daSoen la segadora o en el motor.• La cuchilla puede afilarse con una lima o en

una rueda rectificadora. No trate de afilarlamientras se encuentra en la segadora.

• Pare revisar el balance de la cuchilla, claveun clavo en una viga o en la pared. Dejealrededor de una pulgada de un clavo rectoexpuesto. Ponga el agujere central de lacuchilla sobre ta cabeza del clavo. Si lacuchilla estd balanceada debe permaneceren la posicibn horizontal. Si cualquiera delos extremos de la cuchilla se mueve haciaabajo, afile el extremo pesado hasta queesta quede balanceada.

RUEDAS DE IMPULSI(_NRevise las ruedas de impulsi6n delanterascada vez antes de segar, para asegurarse deque se mueven libremente.Si las ruedas no giran libremente quiere decirque hay basura, recortes de c6sped, etc. en elArea de las ruedas de impulsi6n y tienen quelimpiarse para liberarlas.Es necesario limpiar las ruedas de impulsi6n;revise ambas ruedas delanteras.1. Remueva los tapacubos, las clavijas de

MOTORLUBRICACIONUse solamente aceite de detergente de altacalidad clasificado con la clasificaci6n SF-SJde servicio API. Seleccione la calidad deviscosidad SAE seg_n su temperatura deoperaci6n esperada.

CALIDADES DE_VISCOSIDAD DE SAE

AVISO: Los aceites de multiviscosidad (5W30,10W30, etc.) mejoran el arranque en climafrfo, y revise el nivel del aceite del motormenudo, pare evitar un posible dafio en elmotor, debido a que no tiene suficiente aceite.Cambie el aceite despu_s de 25 horas deoperaci6n o por Io menos una vez al afio si lasegaclora se utiliza menos 25 horas el afio.Revise el nivel del aceite del cdrter antes dearrancar el motor y despu_s de cada cinco (5)horas de uso continuedo. Apriete el tap6n delaceite en forma segura cada vez que revise elnivel del aceite.

PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DEL MOTOR

AVISO: Antes de incliner la segadora paradrenar el aceite, drene el tanque de combus-tible haciendo cotter el motor hasta que eltanque est_ vacio.1. Desconecte el alambre de la bujfa y

pbngalo de modo que no pueda entrar encontacto con 6sta.

2. Remueva la tapa del dep6sito del aceite;d_jela a un lado en una superficie limpia.

3. Incline la cortadora de c_sped por estecostado tal como se muestra y purgue elaceite en un recipiente id6neo. Mueva lasegadora de atrds para adelante pararemover todo el aceite que se hayaquedado atrapado dentro del motor.

4. Limpie todo el aceite derramado en lasegadora yen el lado del motor.

5. Rellene el motor con aceite. (Vea =PARAAGREGAR EL ACEITE" en la secci6n deOpereci6n de este manual.)

MOTORSISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLEIMPORTANTE: Es importante evitar que seformen depositos de coma en partesfundamentales del sistema de combustibletales como el carburador, el filtre del combus-tible, la manguera del combustible o en elestanque durante el almacenamiento. Loscombustibles mezclados con alcohol(conocido como gasohol o que tienen etanol ometanol) pueden atraer humedad, Io queconduce a la separacion y a la formacion deacidos durante el almacenamiento.
