2020 High Holy Days Are Upon Us

Shana Tova. Seaside Jewish Community is looking forward to sharing with you fulfilling and meaningful High Holy Days services as the new year 5781 begins.

Services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur this year will be delivered via YouTube (this is a change from the information in last month’s article). Instructions for accessing the SJC YouTube channel are included in this issue (see page 11), as well as in the mailing recently sent to you. You will also find the complete schedule of services (see page 10).

Additionally, you will receive a mailing containing important information to keep handy as a reference, including the schedule of the High Holy Days services, beginning with Selichot and ending with Simchat Torah. On the reverse side of the schedule are tips on how best to access the services. We recommend viewing the services on your laptop or desktop. If you would prefer to view the services on your TV, read the 2020 Technical Tips page. Test out your equipment in advance of the Erev Rosh Hashanah service on Sept. 18.

The month of Elul has been a time to prepare ourselves spiritually for the upcoming Days of Awe, the observance of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

We must prepare ourselves for changes in how we will worship as a congregation during these

uncertain times brought on by COVID-19.

There are certainly many changes to the holiday experience we have all come to enjoy with our Seaside “family.” We will be together in spirit, although we are not able to be physically together. Let us pray that the challenges we must face this year will be a distant memory by the time we celebrate the beginning of 5782.

Also, do you need a machzor book? See page 3 for instructions on how to get one. Tashlich Observance

Following Seaside tradition, Tashlich will be observed in the afternoon on the first day of Rosh Hashanah – Saturday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. (weather permitting). To accommodate all who wish to participate, Tashlich will be conducted at several locations throughout Sussex County. Masks must always be worn, and physical distance must be maintained by non-household members. Reserve your space through sjc.yapsody.com by Monday, Sept. 7. You will be told your specific location once we know how many participants are in each geographic area.

There will also be a virtual Tashlich option for those who are not able to attend or are uncomfortable attending in person. This virtual option will be available for everyone in case of inclement weather. The Zoom link will be provided in the eblast on Sept. 17.

President’s Message – Marsha Davis As I sit down to write this

message, past holiday memories fill my mind. I remember the excitement of preparation for the family gathering and of so much cooking (not my best talent). Each year I could never get the children dressed and out of the house on time. It was always a rush.

This year is different, in so many ways. There is quiet time to prepare mentally for my holiday observances. My family will be my congregation, my community; and best of all, I can order my food from Rosenfeld’s. The pandemic has offered me more solitude time for reflection, despite the loss of the hugs and shared prayers while sitting with family and friends.

My community has become more important, and my effort has become stronger to connect, prepare, and participate.

As we are approaching The Days of Awe, from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur, consider what you can do to make your observance more meaningful. Will you dress for services? Will you prepare a special place in your home in which to worship? Will you reach out to someone in our community to let them know you care?

These are the most sacred and important days of the Jewish year. A time for deep introspection, contemplation, and transformation around two themes – teshuvah and tikkum – returning to our true self in seeking the Divine within and repairing the world with justice and compassion. Shanah Tovah Umetukah.

Message from Rabbi Kevin It’s that time of year! Although

we have officially ended our summer vacations, we certainly do not need to ask ourselves: “Where did the summer go, passing us so quickly?” I am sure that this past summer is one that we will remember, not so fondly, as hopefully the one and only pandemic summer.

As we look toward the High Holidays, a few short weeks from now, we are in the month of Elul. Perhaps we may take the time each day to join other Seaside members to hear the sound of the shofar, allowing it to inspire us to begin a process of introspection and self-evaluation, about where we might have missed the mark this past year, and, most importantly, what improvements we can make in ourselves in 5781.

Seaside is so truly fortunate to have a Rabbi Emeritus (Beth Cohen) who has put forth great effort guiding and helping me to organize this year’s High Holiday prayers. Our collaborative work has been so enjoyable for me that it sometimes becomes too easy to take for granted the effort and time that she is volunteering, in order that Seaside does not feel that this year’s services are unfamiliar.

Knowing that perhaps the most important part of these services is feeling as though we have gathered as a community, and realizing that we will not have that exact same experience this year — we’ve attempted to create a virtual gathering that will be inspiring for all of us as we look forward to a challenging year for ourselves, our faith community, our country, and our society. Shana Tova to all!

Would you like to have a physical copy of the machzor, On Wings of Awe, for Seaside’s virtual High Holy Days services? The prayer book pages will not be displayed on the screen, since the services will be delivered virtually via YouTube. Members can borrow books from SJC or order their own copies.

The machzor pick-up dates at SJC’s parking lot (please wear a mask) are Sunday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. On Sept. 13, last names beginning with A-K should come between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Last names beginning with L-Z should come from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. The limit is two machzors per member household. We thank you in advance for your cooperation with returning the books to SJC on Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Page 4 Seaside Jewish Community September 2020 Book Group Event

On Sept. 8 at 5 p.m., the Lewes Library, SJC Book Group, and Browseabout Books are jointly sponsoring a book author event.

Be part of a live, interactive conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Kaufman, author of The Last Kings of Shanghai: The Rival Jewish Dynasties That Helped Create Modern China. The book tells an epic, multigenerational story of two rival dynasties who flourished in Shanghai and Hong Kong as twentieth-century China surged into the modern era.

Please register for this Zoom program through the Lewes Library (https://delawarelibraries.libcal.com/event/6905960), which will be hosting this program. Haftarah Program

The first Haftarah program of the 2020–2021 Season with Jeffrey Rosen will be on Monday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. This session will focus on Sukkot Intermediate Shabbat – Ezekiel 38:18-39;19.

The class will start at the End of the World, the Prophet Ezekiel’s vision of the future War of Gog and Magog. Who was Ezekiel? What are the historical and theological bases of his vision? Who are Gog and Magog? How does this Haftarah tie into the apocalyptic Haftarah for the first day of Sukkot from the Prophet Zechariah, which we studied last year, and into the Sukkot season?

The Zoom link to join the session will appear in the weekly eblast, or check with Jeffrey Rosen at [email protected].

Capital Campaign News At this year’s High Holy Days

services, please listen for an exciting announcement regarding the Capital Campaign. The announcement will describe a unique opportunity to participate in Seaside’s transformation and increase the impact of your gift.

The campaign hopes to come as close to $1.25 million as possible. While the coronavirus has made this a difficult and frustrating time for many, most of us have been fortunate enough to escape illness and hardship. At a time when all places of worship have been closed, we have been constructing a beautiful new building.

For more information about the Capital Campaign, please contact Marilyn Feldman at [email protected], or 301-343-2706.

Seaside member Sue Schaffer is

creating this beautiful quilted chuppah (above) as a gift for Seaside. The handcrafted chuppah, featuring a four-season tree-of-life design, will be used to march our Torah scrolls into the new building, and it will also be displayed as a wall hanging.

Sue used material that complements the colors chosen for the interior and incorporated fabric from the curtains in the sanctuary of the original building. The snowflakes on the winter tree are made with lace from Marjorie Kobrin’s wedding gown.

Holocaust Series Part II On Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m.,

Kyra Schuster, curator at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., will present a program titled, “American POWs and the Holocaust.”

Kyra was instrumental in researching this little-known episode, which was featured in an Emmy-nominated documentary about 350 American soldiers captured as prisoners of war during the Battle of the Bulge. These soldiers were sent to the Berga, a sub-camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Kyra will share the experience of these Americans through testimony and artifacts from the Museum’s permanent collection.

The Zoom link for this program will be provided in the weekly eblast.

Helping Hands SJC offers support to members who are ill, grieving, homebound, or just need a helping hand. Available support includes sending cards, visiting people at home, preparing and delivering meals, picking up groceries and prescriptions, small repairs around the house, and running errands. New Helping Hand team members are welcome. Contact Ellie Flanzraich at 561-504-7922 for more information.

Our weekly Email blasts on Thursdays contain important

reminders and highlight our events. To sign up, go to the SJC website and click on the Sign Up Here button.

Help from the Heart: Peace Week Initiative

As part of the Peace Week celebration (see articles at left and on page 6), Seaside’s Community Service and Multi-Faith Committees have organized a collection drive.

“Help from the Heart” will aid the most vulnerable in our community – the homeless and those who cannot afford to put food on their tables. Our collection drive will benefit Code Purple Shelters of Sussex County (Love, Inc.) and Epworth Methodist Church Food Pantry.

We are making it very easy for our members to participate. When you come to pick up your High Holy Day prayer book at the drive-through on Sept. 13 or 14 (see article on page 3), we will be giving our grocery bags for you to collect items. Instructions on when and where to return them will be attached to the bags and are also provided below. It is not necessary to pick up a bag to participate.

We also encourage you to share this donation drive with friends and neighbors and ask them to drop off items at Epworth (dates below) or with you to deliver. Our last donation drive was a success due to support from generous neighbors.

We would greatly appreciate it if you do not donate outdated food items. We are collecting the following:

- Face masks, flashlights, travel-size hand sanitizer, warm gloves for adults, 64-gallon trash bags, hand warmers, socks, Gold Bond powder, deodorant, razors for men and women, shower wipes,

lightweight rain ponchos, and first aid supplies.

- Peanut butter/jelly, canned tuna/chicken, pancake mix/syrup, tomato sauce, children’s cereal, canned soup, Spam, Chef Boyardee/Spaghettios, baked beans, apple sauce in jars (pop top cans preferred).

Donations should be dropped off at Seaside on prayer book return day, Sunday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon or at Epworth United Methodist Church (bayside entrance) as follows:

- Sunday, Oct. 4. 1–3 p.m. - Tuesday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m.–noon - Thursday, Oct. 8, 2–5 p.m. For those who do not wish to

shop or who are out of town, donations will be accepted via check, and a committee member will purchase items to donate. Please make checks payable to Seaside Jewish Community and include a note (or write in the memo line) that the donation is for “Peace Week Help from the Heart”. Mail to Seaside Jewish Community, P.O. Box 1472, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. The deadline for monetary donations is Friday, Oct. 9.

To have someone pick up items from your doorstep or for more information, contact Emily Eider at [email protected]. Thank you as always for your generosity.

More than 1,500 diapers were collected for this year’s annual diaper drive to benefit the Baby Pantry Community Resource Center in Rehoboth Beach.

Stand Up for Justice: Tools for Confronting Bias

Seaside is sponsoring the Tuesday night program for Peace Week on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. The workshop, Stand Up for Justice: Tools for Confronting Bias, will be presented by the Anti-Defamation League. The first portion of the program will be a thought-provoking presentation on bias and how to recognize it, followed by breakout groups to address ways to deal with hate when it occurs. Seaside and Peace Week hope that you will join us for this timely subject matter. More information to follow. Religious School Returns

Religious School registration is open! Please reach out to [email protected] if you have not received an enrollment form or would like more information.

Religious School classes will be held virtually until we can guarantee the health and safety of our students, volunteers, and the larger SJC community. We are working on putting together both whole-group and small-group learning experiences so that our students still feel connected to each other, to our community, and to their Jewish heritage. Youth programming for the High Holy Days will take place during Religious School sessions on Sept. 20 and 27.

Please remember to send in your membership dues so that

we can continue to do the work for our community.

Annual Diaper Drive Recap Thank you to everyone who

donated to our annual diaper drive to benefit the Baby Pantry of the Community Resource Center, Rehoboth Beach. More than 1,500 diapers were collected (see photo below). A special thank you to the residents of the Independence community in Millsboro, who generously responded with donations when Phyllis Bloom asked for their help.

Seaside members are always welcome to share our requests for donated items with their friends and neighbors.

Feedback Needed The mission of the Worship

Committee is to serve everyone. We get feedback in all kinds of ways. Please let Rabbi Kevin Bernstein know if there are some things you would like

included in services. It would be helpful if you could be specific. Want a melody,

specific piece of music, poem, or prayer? Not sure? Rabbi

Bernstein is leading this charge and wants to hear from you.

Are you Zoom savvy? We need your help!

We already have a few people who really know how to juggle page turning of the Siddur while

services are going on, but we could use a few more so the burden is not on one or two

people. If you are familiar with Zoom and have these skills and

are willing, please contact Sara Rosen at

[email protected].

High Holy Days Services

2020 Technical Tips

We invite you to join us for Seaside Jewish Community’s 2020 High Holy Day Services which will

be streaming online. If you’re unfamiliar with streaming live events, we suggest a little planning

and testing.

When we are actually streaming, visit our YouTube Channel or

homepage (www.seasidejewishcommunity.com) to view our Live Stream.

We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer (rather than a tablet or phone).

If you would prefer to view it on your TV:

If you have a “smart” TV, log into the YouTube app and go to the Seaside channel or our

homepage (url above) directly on the TV’s internet interface.

If you do not have a “smart” TV, inspect your TV and your computer to see what “input” options

you have on the TV and what “output” ports you have on the computer.

Use the HDMI ports if you have them:

• If both your computer and your TV have

“HDMI” ports, you can connect your laptop to

your TV with just an HDMI cable. Many laptops

have one or more HDMI outputs. Most modern

TVs have one or more HDMI inputs. Cables are

available through Amazon, Staples, Walmart,

Lowes, and Home Depot in a variety of lengths.

Once connected, you may need to go to the TV

menu using the remote and select the right

INPUT (they are usually named HDMI 1, HDMI

2, etc). This should duplicate the screen and

audio from the computer to the TV.

• If your TV has “HDMI” ports, but your

laptop doesn’t, then you may need an adapter

AND an HDMI cable to make it work. See the

chart on the left to identify what ports are

available on your computer. For example, you

can buy a “USB to HDMI” adapter that you

would plug into the computer and then plug an

HDMI cable into that and follow the steps

above. Adapters are readily available on

Amazon, at Walmart and other retailers.

Wanna do a test?

Email us at [email protected] with any questions or to sign up for a test once you have your equipment set up.

DON’T FORGET TO POWER UP: Fully charge or plug in your laptop!
