MEDIA RELEASE

Queensland Ballet announces a shimmering Season 2016

In 2016 Queensland Ballet will shine brighter than ever before with a program that will delight,

entice and inspire. Queensland Ballet’s Artistic Director Li Cunxin today announced an exciting new season for 2016 including a selection of ballets that will showcase the artistry, virtuosity and technique of the Company’s dancers. “We are thrilled to present this new season and look forward to seeing our audiences swept back in time to an era of elegance,” he said. The 2016 season includes a delightful production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream by acclaimed choreographer Liam Scarlett. A co-production with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, this is an enchanting telling of this mythical tale and will transport audiences to another world. Derek Deane’s Strictly Gershwin will wow audiences with a spectacular tribute to the big band era and will see Queensland Ballet dancers swing, tap and pirouette their way through this high energy performance. It will be Queensland Ballet like it has never been seen before and will be a glamorous and entertaining celebration of dance. As the world pauses to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and honour the Anzac legacy, Queensland Ballet’s Lest We Forget season draws on the power of dance to reflect upon the turbulence of war. The season will include Paul Taylor’s Company B, and two new works from Ma Cong and Natalie Weir. This very special Lest We Forget season is supported by the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Fund. The much loved Dance Dialogues season will return in 2016 giving audiences the chance to experience intimate studio performances including short works choreographed by some of Queensland Ballet’s very own dancers as well as established choreographers, rehearsals and Q&A sessions. Mr Li said he was sure Brisbane audiences would be pleased to know that the Ballet’s Christmas tradition of Ben Stevenson’s The Nutcracker would return again in 2016.

“This ballet has already become a firm festive favourite and we’re so delighted that audiences have made us a part of their Christmas celebrations,” he said. “Another thing we’re looking forward to is the launch of our My First Ballet series which will see us stage special ballet interpretations of stories for younger audiences. “This is the first time we will be catering specifically to very young audiences and we’re happy to be partnering with the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Out of the Box Festival to inspire a love of ballet in young ones. “We’re also excited to be once again taking ballet throughout Queensland as part of our Tutus on Tour program. “Next year’s tour will take in even more regions than ever and will allow audiences an up close and personal experience with Queensland Ballet through choreography, technique and rehearsal demonstrations as well as performances and information sessions. “Queensland Ballet’s 2016 season will bring old-world style and timeless grandeur to the stage and will take our audiences on a wonderful journey into the beautiful artform of ballet. We can’t wait to share this collection of ballets. “We could not present the beautiful ballets we do without the ongoing and generous support of our partners and benefactors. We thank the Queensland and Australian Governments, our Principal Lead Partner Suncorp, Community Partner QGC and Major Partners BMW, JC Decaux and Virgin Australia. These organisations, as well as many other corporate partners and donors, allow us to deliver an always engaging and entertaining program of dance.” Queensland Ballet season tickets go on sale at 2pm on Monday 21 September, and are the best way to see ballet in 2016. Season ticket buyers can choose two or more productions; can save up to 30% on regular tickets; have access to priority booking; and receive invitations to private information evenings.

5 MEDIA KIT SEASON 2016 QUEENSLAND BALLET

A MIDSUMMERNIGHT’S DREAM

THE STORY

In a forest clearing, under a moonlit night sky, Titania and Oberon quarrel over a Changeling Boy found

sleeping in the wood. Titania eventually takes possession of the infant. In his rage Oberon summons his apprentice Puck and sends him to search for a magical flower. When sprinkled into the eyelids of a person sleeping, this magic flower causes the sleeper to fall in love with the first creature he or she sees upon awakening. Oberon plans to use this on Titania in revenge. Meanwhile, four explorers have entered the forest in search of the exotic specimens to be found there, and a complicated love triangle ensues. Helena pines for Demetrius, who is in turn infatuated with Hermia, who is happily coupled with Lysander. Upon seeing this, Oberon orders Puck to resolve this situation by using the magic flower to make Demetrius return Helena’s affections. However, Puck confuses the two men and administers the potion to the wrong one, causing even more trouble.Titania awakens under the flower’s spell to fall in love with the rustic Bottom, whom Puck has transformed into a donkey. Oberon spies on the couple, taking great pleasure in Titania’s humiliation, to which she is entirely oblivious. Upon realising Puck’s mistake with Demetrius and Lysander, Oberon is furious and sets about punishing Puck and resolving the mess, so that Lysander returns to loving Hermia and Demetrius finds love with Helena.Bottom is restored to human form and, as the night draws to a close, Titania and Oberon resolve their differences and gently return the sleeping Changeling Boy to where they found him, and to his own midsummer night’s dreams.

CHOREOGRAPHER

L iam Scarlett is one of the most sought after choreographers working today. He created

A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a coproduction between Queensland Ballet and Royal New Zealand Ballet with the aim of taking audiences on a wonderful mythical journey. He aimed to stay true to Shakespeare’s story but also inject new energy, wit and character into the tale.

HISTORY

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is surely one of Shakespeare’s best-known and best-loved plays,

an inspiration for many artistic endeavours, from instrumental music and songs to opera, painting, film and of course ballet. Many of the characters are instantly recognisable – Titania, Oberon, Puck, Bottom with his ass’s head – and, as with all of Shakespeare’s works, the play is a source of phrases that have entered into the vernacular. The first recorded performance of the play took place at the court of King James I in London, on New Year’s Day, 1605.

MUSIC

The original music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream was created by Felix Mendelssohn. Nigel Gaynor,

in his previous role as Music Director for Royal New Zealand Ballet, worked with Scarlett to put together a tailor-made score to fit the choreographer’s vision of the story.

7 MEDIA KIT SEASON 2016 QUEENSLAND BALLET

STRICTLY GERSHWIN

THE STORY

W ith its gorgeous Gershwin tunes, dancing, singing and all-out razzmatazz, Strictly Gershwin is a

glorious celebration of some of the best-known music of the 20th century that defined the loves, hopes and mood of a generation. With stunning choreography from Derek Deane, the dancers of Queensland Ballet and special guests will take you on a glamorous journey through ballet, tap and ballroom, culminating in a spectacular grand finale – the sparkling, energetic ballet from An American in Paris. The Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the musical direction of Gareth Valentine is on-stage, 1930s big band-style, as much a part of the entertainment as the dancers. Superb guest singers and tap dancers will join the Company to present this perfectly-pitched homage to Gershwin’s Hollywood and Broadway classics, while images of the stars of the era – think Astaire and Rogers, Hepburn and Tracy, Bogie and Bacall – flicker on a big screen above.

CHOREOGRAPHER

Derek Deane, the renowned former Royal Ballet Principal Dancer and former Artistic Director

of English National Ballet created and choreographed Strictly Gershwin. Queensland Ballet has also engaged guest tap artist Bill Simpson (from Red Hot Rhythm) to choreograph and perform in the tap sequences, along with Company dancers, for some astounding, Busby Berkley-inspired routines.

MUSIC

Strictly Gershwin is a celebration of George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin classic music.

Audiences will recognise many of the songs including Someone to Watch Over Me, The Man I Love, ‘S Wonderful, Embraceable You, An American in Paris, Rhapsody in Blue, It Ain’t Necessarily So, Strike up the Band, A Foggy Day, Summertime and I Got Rhythm.

8 MEDIA KIT SEASON 2016 QUEENSLAND BALLET

29 JULY – 6 AUGUST

LEST WE FORGET

Lest We Forget is a poignant reflection on war, featuring works from three of the best choreographers working today.

COMPANY B

Just as America began to emerge from the Depression at the dawn of the 1940s, the country

was drawn into the Second World War. In a seminal piece of Americana, Paul Taylor’s Company B recalls a turbulent era through the hit songs of the Andrews Sisters. Although the songs depict a nation surging with high spirits, millions of men were bidding farewell to wives or girlfriends and many would never return from battle. The dance focuses on these bittersweet contradictions.

Choreographer PAUL TAYLOR

IN THE BEST MOMENTS

War can intensify feelings of love, commitment and passion. It can strengthen a human’s resolve

to live life to the fullest, to make each moment count. Inspired by The Hours Suite by Philip Glass, this is a mesmerizing meditation on human relationships across three movements. This new work has been especially created for Queensland Ballet’s 2016 season by a bold and innovative choreographer.

Choreographer MA CONGCommissioned by Queensland Ballet and Queensland Performing Arts Centre

WE WHO ARE LEFT

This new work from one of Australia’s most acclaimed choreographers is inspired by poetry

written during the First World War, with touching and emotional insight into the lives of those affected. The work tells personal stories exploring themes such as separation, loss, fear, pride, bravery and dignity.

10 MEDIA KIT SEASON 2016 QUEENSLAND BALLET

THE NUTCRACKER

THE STORY

Herr Stahlbaum and his wife are giving a Christmas party. Clara and Fritz, their children, greet the

guests. All the children are given toys by their parents. Suddenly, the mysterious Dr Drosselmeyer arrives and entertains the children with his magical tricks and wind-up dolls. Dr. Drosselmeyer brings a special gift for Clara, a wooden Nutcracker. In a jealous fit, Fritz breaks it, but Dr Drosselmeyer quickly repairs the Nutcracker. The party ends, the guests leave and the Stahlbaums retire for the night. Clara awakens, the clock strikes midnight and the room fills with giant mice that attack her! Life-sized toy soldiers, led by the valiant Nutcracker, come to her rescue. The King Rat attacks the Nutcracker, but Clara hits him with her shoe and the Nutcracker wins the battle. After the battle, the Nutcracker turns into a handsome prince. The Nutcracker Prince transforms the Stahlbaum’s house into the Land of Snow. The Snow Queen and the Snow Prince dance with the Snowflakes. Clara and the Nutcracker Prince depart for the Kingdom of Sweets in a beautiful, enchanted sleigh.

ACT 2

C lara and the Nutcracker Prince continue their journey across the Lemonade Sea. When they

arrive in the Kingdom of Sweets, the cooks are preparing delectable treats for their enjoyment and they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. In Clara’s honour, the Sugar Plum Fairy arranges for the inhabitants of her kingdom to entertain them while they eat by performing a Spanish dance, an Arabian dance and a Chinese dance. Clara is also entertained by the Dance of the Mirlitons, a dance with Mother Ginger and her children, a Russian dance and the Waltz of the Flowers. Then, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince dance a grand pas de deux. As the celebration draws to a close, Clara drifts off to sleep. She awakens from her dreams as the Nutcracker salutes his Princess Clara.

CHOREOGRAPHER

Choreographer Ben Stevenson is a master at storytelling and creating unique characters.

Stevenson served as Artistic Director of Houston Ballet from 1976-2003 and in July 2003 was appointed Artistic Director Emeritus and the Company’s affiliated school was renamed Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy. During his tenure with Houston ballet Stevenson created numerous full length ballets including Swan lake, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote and original productions of Peer Gynt, Dracula, The Snow Maiden and Cleopatra.

HISTORY

The Nutcracker ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, was first produced

at the Maryinsky Theatre on 18 December, 1892. The original choreography is now no longer performed, but the attraction of Tchaikovsky’s score and the suitability of the story for Christmas entertainment has inspired many choreographers to make their own version of this enchanting ballet. Seeing The Nutcracker is a dearly-held Christmas ritual for countless families around the world.

MUSIC

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was given the commission to compose the music for The Nutcracker. When

the score for the ballet was completed, Tchaikovsky arranged a concert at which a suite of dances from The Nutcracker was performed in March 1892, some nine months before the first production of the ballet.
