WPA THEMATIC CONFERENCE Coercive Treatment in Psychiatry: A Comprehensive Review June 6 to 8, 2007, Dresden, Germany

Welcome Letters

Dear Colleagues and Friends,I am delighted to invite you on behalf of the World Psychiatric Association to participate in a special WPA Thematic Conference on "Coercive Treatment in Psychiatry: A Comprehensive Review”. This event will offer us the opportunity to discuss the conceptual, ethical and technical aspects of coercive treatment in our field as well as prospects for the future. The city of Dresden, one of the world's most beautiful, shall be a propitious setting to engage in critical and practical discussions and to establish and renew professional and personal relationships.Looking forward to the pleasure of greeting you personally in Dresden soon.

Cordially yours,Professor Juan E. MezzichPresident of the World Psychiatric AssociationPresident of the WPA Thematic Conference

Dear Colleagues and Friends,On behalf of the Scientific Committee, I am pleased to invite you to participate in the first international meeting devoted to examining coercive treatment in psychiatry. Our hope is that the clinical, ethical, political, and empirical aspects of involuntary institutional and community treatment will be fully and candidly explored at this gathering of mental health and legal professionals, policy makers, consumers, family members, and researchers from around the world. While the fissures in this area run so deep and are so long-standing that achieving consensus is unlikely, our aspiration is that this historic meeting will sharpen moral issues, clarify political viewpoints, identify evidence-based practices, and share cutting-edge data on one of the most contested topics of our time.

Professor John MonahanChairman of the Scientific Committee

Page 5: SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT - Sonepsyn Announcement Coercive Treatment.pdf · Professor John Monahan Chairman of the Scientific Committee. Dear Colleagues and Friends, It is a great honour

Dear Colleagues and Friends,It is a great honour for the German psychiatric community to welcome psychiatrists, other mental health professionals, specialists in public mental health and medical ethics, legal experts, users and relatives and their organizations, and (mental) health politicians of the world in Dresden in summer 2007. With its rich cultural heritage and a very special political background in the last century, Dresden is a perfect place to comprehensively review an ethically and historically sensitive theme which seems essential to psychiatry, but is questioned by the users and survivors of psychiatry and mental health professionals: coercive treatment.Under this general theme, the conference will explore every clinical, legal, and ethical aspect of this issue relevant for the provision of mental health care. Further, it will combine users' and professionals' views on this issue, and it will present the most recent research results and initia-tives in this human rights area of mental health care as well as the experiences of users and survivors of psychiatry. It is the hope of the conference organizers that this scientific event will not only show the currently existing significant international variation of different aspects of coercive treatment. In addition, it should serve as an opportunity that should stimulate equality of healthcare oppor-tunities as well as increase the consumer focus in this area. Thus, all submissions, including those critical of coercion, referred to the outlined aims of the conference are most welcome, and we expect your most valuable contributions to the scientific program. This will turn the conference in an important and successful scientific event, and we kindly invite you to participate.

Scientific Program

WPA Thematic ConferenceCoercive Treatment in Psychiatry: A Comprehensive Review

Under the general theme of "Coercive Treatment in Psychiatry: A Comprehensive Review”, this conference will host scientific studies (and other empirical contributions) exploring all clinical, legal, and ethical aspects of this issue relevant for the provision of mental health care.

You will find the components of the scientific program below followed by the topic list to help the participants in preparing their contributions.

All proposals for the scientific program will have to be approved by the scientific committee.

Scientific Components

Plenary lecturesThese lectures will be given by prominent scholars and users invited from across the world by the scientific committee. These lectures, for 30 minutes each, will focus on core issues of the general conference theme. These plenary lectures will be scheduled as non-parallel sessions.

SymposiaAll symposia will have maximum five speakers including the chair and the co-chair. A total time of 90 minutes will be spared for each session. Special importance will be given to encourage the interactive participation of the audience.

Regular symposiaThese sessions are expected to be proposed by the interested conference participants. All psychiatrists, and other mental health care professionals, specialists in public mental health and medical ethics, legal experts, service users and relatives and their organisations, and (mental) health politicians across the world are invited to organize symposia; involving speakers from different countries in each session should be given special priority.

About Dresden

The City of Dresden located at the widening of the valley of the Elbe River, was chartered as a city almost 800 years ago, and it has been the residence of the Saxonian princes and kings

thsince the end of the 15 century. The cultural and economic highlights experienced by Dresden in the Baroque period and

th thagain during the period of industrialization in the 19 and 20 centuries met with a sudden end in the almost complete

thdestruction of the city on the 13 of February in 1945. During the following 40 years being part of the German Democratic Republic, Dresden remained a wounded city, not fully rebuilt and characterized by dilapidation. After the German reunification Dresden got many vital impulses and is now the capital of the Free German State of Saxony, re-founded in 1991. An economic upturn and political stability is the background for Dresden to re-establish itself as a cultural and educational centre and a place of

interest for tourists, offering highlights such as world-famous orchestras and art exhibitions as well as lovely surroundings (e.g. Saxonian Switzerland). The city hosts 6 universities with about 40,000 students, and several other research and education institutions.

Social and Accompanying Program

The Conference Dinner is planned in one of the beautiful castles of Dresden. The Albrechtsberg Palace is offering a festive setting with a beautiful view across Dresden.

There are several opportunities to discover Dresden and its surroundings. We are offering you a few possibilities for half and full day guided tours. For further information please see: www.wpa2007dresden.org
