MEET REV. DAVID HOLDEN

Although we began our process by seeking a part time Associate Pastor, we shifted to a different track. Instead of issuing a congregational call to an Associate Pastor, our Session has hired Rev. David Holden as the Director of Outreach and Involvement to a part time 20 hour per week contract.

With over 20 years of ordained ministry, he has served as a local church pastor, a member of the national staff of the United Church of Christ, and a chaplain with Hospice of the Bluegrass. He graduated in 1986 from the University of Mane at Orono with a B.A. in English and received an M.Div in 1990 from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He’s married to Rev. Bennie Braddick, pastor of Twin Pines Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Lexington. His daughter Sarah is a senior at Vassar College and son Lucas is a sophomore attending High School in OH.

Stop by his office which is located in the Education Wing on the 2nd floor (room 204) and introduce yourself! His office hours are Tuesdays (9:00-5:00) and Fridays (9:00-1:00).

Continued from Page 1

Accessibility, so “that all may worship,” has greatly improved at Second Church in the past 10 years since the inception of the Open Arms Committee. Begun and chaired by Belva Collins (and later led by Valorie Walz), this ministry hosted a variety of speakers and events around Access Sunday - people like disabilities expert Rev. Bill Gaventa, Rev. Emily Barr, visitors from The Deaf church in Lexington, those who spoke about Aging. . . The committee also helped guide us in making the chancel wheelchair accessible. We now have better hearing devices for Sunday services, an accessible elevator, and perhaps most importantly, a greater awareness developed in our children, our youth, and adults, of how to practice greater inclusivity and hospitality, a call to us from Jesus himself.

We share this to thank all who have worked to make this ministry a reality through the years. There is a season and a “time for every purpose under heaven” as the great writer of Ecclesiastes so proclaims. Since interest on the committee has waned, it appears that until God moves us differently, the season and time for this ministry has come to pass. May we all continue to remember the watchwords of this committee, “so that all may worship. . .” Blessings. . . Erin Rouse

THANK YOU OPEN ARMS . . .

'.....and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,

and to walk humbly with your God?' Micah 6:8

Second’s Justice Ministry Team brought your community concerns from our Listening-House meetings this past month to BUILD's (Building a United Interfaith Lex. through Direct Action) congregational Team Assembly, October 13. The top three problems elicited from 500 plus people are: YOUTH/EDUCATION--

numerous disparities listed: expectations of student achievement depends on what school a child attends and where, "testing is for the schools-not the students", various learning disabilities (dyslexia) not recognized with appropriate follow-up needs. JOBS--minimum wage issue, vocational education needs for people seeking tech and service (electrician, plumbing) jobs. CRIME/DRUGS--

gang related crimes, increase drive by shootings, drugs becoming more available to middle school children, DARE program eliminated from schools due to "no funds", armed robberies in ALL areas of Lexington.

At the Community Problem Assembly on October 27, 326 justice ministry network members (27 from Second) from 25 congregations voted crime and drugs the most urgent injustice issue. BUILD will begin its 4 month research process at the Research to Action Kick-off on November 24th. Justice Ministry Network Members from the 25 interfaith congregations are encouraged to attend with hopes they may choose to join the research team. Your support with BUILD-ing Second's Justice Ministry is vitally needed. Please contact Bill or Fredda Moody, Bobbie Brown, Catherine Hunt, Jim Drahovzal or Judy Maxson for more information on how you can help make Lexington a better place to live for all God's children.

JUSTICE MINISTRY NEWS

For those who have been meaning to write that piece for the Advent Devotional, we still are in need of a few more entries. Our theme this year is “Hope” and the deadline is November 7th. Here are the guidelines: 250 words or less; include a short scripture, a brief prayer, and a heading or title if you are able. You may write a poem or share a story or an experience that proclaims the “hope” of Advent or Christmas. Email Erin Rouse ([email protected]) or you may also contact Sally Scherer ([email protected]). Thanks so much!

RACE FOR THE CURE

It was an early, bright, October morning with a nip in the air in downtown Lexington as Second Presbyterian's Race For The Cure Team gathered to take part in the 2014 Race For The Cure. 75% of the funds raised remain in our 58 county service area (mostly counties east of us) for education, screening, treatment and support of the underserved population. 25% is set aside for funding global research. The state of Kentucky has received major research grants from these funds in the past totaling over 4.5 million dollars. The race this year was not timed. By not timing the race over $7,000 normally charged by the outside timing company was saved which will aid patients and research efforts. Final results for the Komen Lexington race amount of funds raised and the number of participants are still being tabulated. During the awards ceremony Second Church's team was presented with the top non-profit fundraising award. The award can be seen in The Gathering Place. Our sincere thanks to all who participated as walkers, runners and donors. Fredda Moody, Captain and Jackie Graves, Parish Nurse
