Thank you for your warm welcome on my first Sunday among you. The cold and snowy morning was no match

for your hospitality, and my family enjoyed every minute of our first Sunday with you.

I am grateful for the call you have extended me to serve as one of your pastors here. It will be a joy to serve

alongside the amazing staff members who have been serving here before my arrival, and you should know that

they have already displayed a faithfulness that excites me. Even more, they have welcomed me warmly and are

helping me to find my way in a new place.

I look forward to getting to know you well in the coming days. I am already aware of your commitment to the

way of Jesus Christ, and I am eager to learn with and from you in our time together.

Transitions are never easy. There are still some things to tie up in Virginia, so it will be a few weeks before my

family will join me here. And I will be back and forth a couple of times in these initial weeks. I just hated to wait

until those things were complete before joining you here! I appreciate your understanding and patience during

these weeks.

For now, I simply want you to know that being called to be your pastor here fills me with joy.

Blessings,

Pastor John

• Hope Center 12 Days of Christmas - Second Church

served a delicious dinner of pork loin, new potatoes, green beans, tossed salad, dinner rolls, choice of beverage and ice cream on December 17th during the Hope Center's 12 Days of Christmas celebration to 241 hungry and very happy diners. On December 19th, another group of Second volunteers were out early to provide and serve brunch finger foods and refreshments to the 350 men attending the Hope Center's Christmas party for those participating in one of the many programs at the Hope Center. To all those who donated items or one of these activities or served, thank you!

• Giving Tree - The Giving Tree was richly decorated during the holidays with beautiful handmade hats, paper goods, personal and full size toiletries, hot chocolate mix, new white socks, scarves, gloves and hats, copy paper, notebook paper, ink pens, mailing envelopes...and the list goes on and on! Following Christmas, the tree was stripped early due to the cold weather and the emergency requests from many agencies dealing with an extremely high volume of calls for help. Agencies receiving items placed by you under the Giving Tree were Canaan House, Hope Center, The HopeMobile and ITN of the Bluegrass. If you have an artificial Christmas tree that you no longer need/want, we will be needing one for the Giving Tree next year; due to issues beyond repair, the tree that has been used had to visit the dumpster. Contact the church office (254-7768) if you think you might have one that would fit the bill...tree needs to be at least 6 feet with no lights!

• Christmas Food Baskets - On Sunday, December

16th members of area Presbyterian churches arrived in force at Save a Lot on Southland Drive to pick up food baskets to deliver to the residents of Lakeside Manor and Westminster Village, two Lexington properties owned by Presbyterian Housing Corporation that provide affordable housing for residents who meet qualifications for residency. When they arrived at Save a Lot, their bags were loaded promptly and efficiently and sent off with instructions and listings as well as promises of delicious treats following their drop-off. Youth group members from local Presbyterian churches met the drivers and with much energy and enthusiasm delivered bag after bag up and down stairs to very appreciative individuals. To all those who worked the loading dock, assisted loading, volunteered to drive but were asked to come back next year due to the large number of new individuals who had never had the opportunity to participate in this, driving, delivering or contributing toward the $4445 that was collected for the food baskets at 2nd, thank you...your generosity is amazing!

MISSION THANKS YOU!!

Congratulations to Joe and Allison Porter on the birth of son William Graves.

Roberta James who passed away on December 10th.

Marshall White who passed away on December 14th.

Jean Cox who passed away on January 14th.

I am deeply grateful for everyone's thoughtfulness and prayers during my recent hospitalization. The concern of this Christian community helped restore me. Blessings, Keith Williams

Ephesians 5:15

From the Lexington Fayette County Health Department: The current occurrence of Hepatitis A in Kentucky is considered the worst in the country. In Lexington we are considered in outbreak status. This disease can cause serious illness and even

death. Hep A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by a virus. People are infected after ingesting the virus from very small, undetected amounts of stool from an infected person. Person to person contact and poor hygiene are the culprits. Other sources include illicit drugs, homelessness, and travel to countries where Hepatitis A is common can be to blame but 20% of those infected have no risk factors. Prevention is a 2 dose vaccine, obtainable at most pharmacies without a prescription. Pediatricians have been recommending this for children for years, and now it is the law. Other preventative measures are:

• Wash your hands after using the bathroom, before eating or preparing food.

• Use chlorine bleach (2/3 cup per gallon water) to clean all surfaces. Allow 1 minute contact time, then rinse with water.

• Talk to your health care provider if you have any questions. Prevention is easy and vital!

Jackie Graves, Parish Nurse

Thanks to the Deacons who took their caring partners to a

Christmas lunch at The Cellar on November 28th.

Do you have a special Sunday you would like to honor and/or remember a loved one, or celebrate a special occasion? If so, a flower arrangement in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings is a great way to do this! Visit the “2019 Flower Chart” located in the Gathering Place behind the security desk or call the church office (254-7768).

SANCTUARY FLOWERS FOR SUNDAY
