Dear Parishioners,

Today’s readings teach us not only that we were born to serve and to shine, but that we were created for that purpose. If we embrace that calling Our Lord will exceed all our expectations, because his plans not only encompass our noble ones, but goes way beyond them. We see that in the case of St. John the Baptist, and we also see it in the calling of every believer.

Isaiah in today’s First Reading speaks of Israel’s calling: to serve God for his glory as well as for their own. Israel is called to be the Lord’s servant and to show God’s glory. We were created to serve the Lord and he promises we’ll be glorious in his sight and strengthened by him. That service, at times demanding and thankless, is meant to make the Lord’s glory shine far beyond ourselves. Isaiah today reminds us we’re called to be “a light to the

nations,” and through that, light salvation will reach to the ends of the earth. We’re called to serve and to shine out of no one’s vanity, but to help the Lord’s salvation extend to the ends of the earth.

Paul in today’s Second Reading seconds this lofty calling to serve and to shine. We serve and shine by seeking to do what the Lord asks of us and through striving to live a holy life: In his initial greeting to the Corinthians Paul identifies himself as called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ because it is God’s will that he be one. We serve the Lord by doing his will. He reminds the Corinthians that they are “called to be holy.” Through a life of holiness, we become that light to the nations and help Our Lord bring that good work to completion in each person. The good work is not meant to just remain and be nourished in each one of us: it’s a gift God wants us to give to others as well. Whatever our walk of life, God calls us to be holy, as the dogmatic constitution on the Church, Lumen

Gentium, teaches us: “The classes and duties of life are many, but holiness is one—that sanctity which is

cultivated by all who are moved by the Spirit of God, and who obey the voice of the Father and worship God the

Father in spirit and in truth. These people follow the poor Christ, the humble and cross-bearing Christ in order to

be worthy of being sharers in His glory. Every person must walk unhesitatingly according to his own personal gifts

and duties in the path of living faith, which arouses hope and works through charity” (LG 42).

John the Baptist in today’s Gospel served the Lord as his prophet and knew part of his calling was to put the spotlight on Our Lord and his mission, not on himself: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the

world”: If John the Baptist shines in the fulfillment of his mission, he shines in order to light the way to Christ, the reason for his mission. John is not just called to serve, but to shine. He does not just recognize in Our Lord the signs that the Spirit had promised him; he testifies to them so that others would also get the message. A source of illumination draws our attention, but it also illuminates something else. Our Lord himself, later in John’s Gospel, would describe John as a burning and shining lamp (see John 5:35-36), but that John was meant to shine on the path to Christ. John himself in today’s Gospel admits that the Lord outranks him before he existed before John was even created. The light of his mission pales in comparison to the true light that was coming to enlighten every man. He and all of us are called to be the best versions of ourselves.

CARTA DE PADRE DANIEL

Queridos feligreses,

Queridos feligreses, Las lecturas de hoy nos enseñan no sólo que nacimos para servir y brillar, sino que fuimos creados para ese propósito. Si aceptamos ese llamado Nuestro Señor superará todas nuestras expectativas, porque sus planes no sólo abarcan a nuestros nobles, sino que va mucho más allá de ellos. Vemos eso en el caso de San Juan Bautista, y también lo vemos en el llamado de todo creyente. Isaías en la primera lectura de hoy habla del llamado de Israel: a servir a Dios para su gloria, así como para la suya propia. Israel está llamado a ser el siervo del Señor y a mostrar la gloria de Dios. Fuimos creados para servir al Señor y promete que seremos gloriosos a su vista y fortalecidos por él. Ese servicio, a veces exigente e ingrato, está destinado a hacer que la gloria del Señor brille mucho más allá de nosotros mismos. Isaías hoy nos recuerda que estamos llamados a ser "una luz para las naciones", y a través de esa luz la salvación llegará hasta los confines de la tierra. Estamos llamados a servir y a brillar no por vanidad propia, sino para ayudar a que la salvación de Dios se extienda hasta el fin de la tierra. Pablo en la segunda lectura de hoy secunda este elevado llamado para servir y brillar. Servimos y brillamos procurando hacer lo que el Señor nos pide y esforzándonos por vivir una vida santa: En su saludo inicial a los Corintios Pablo se identifica como llamado a ser apóstol de Jesucristo porque es la voluntad de Dios que sea uno. Servimos al Señor haciendo su voluntad. Recuerda a los corintios que están "llamados a ser santos". A través de una vida de santidad llegamos a ser esa luz a las naciones y ayudamos a Nuestro Señor a llevar esa buena obra a término en cada persona. La buena obra no está destinada a permanecer y nutrirnos en cada uno de nosotros: es un don que Dios quiere que demos a los demás también. Cualquiera que sea nuestro camino de vida, Dios nos llama a ser santos, como nos enseña la constitución dogmática sobre la Iglesia, Lumen Gentium: "Las clases y deberes de la vida son muchos, pero la santidad es una, esa santidad que es cultivada por todos los que son movidos por el Espíritu de Dios, que obedecen la voz del Padre y adoran a Dios Padre en espíritu y en verdad. Estas personas siguen al Cristo pobre, al Cristo humilde y transversal para ser dignos de ser partícipes en Su gloria. Toda persona debe andar sin adjudicaciones de acuerdo con sus propios dones y deberes personales en el camino de la fe viva, que despierta esperanza y trabaja a través de la caridad" (LG 42). Juan el Bautista en el Evangelio de hoy sirvió al Señor como su profeta y sabía que parte de su llamado era enfocarse en Nuestro Señor y en su misión, no en sí mismo: "He aquí, el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo": Si Juan el Bautista brilla en el cumplimiento de su misión, brilla para iluminar el camino a Cristo, la razón de su misión. Juan no sólo está llamado a servir, sino a brillar. No sólo reconoce en Nuestro Señor las señales que el Espíritu le había prometido; las testifica para que otros también reciban el mensaje. Una fuente de iluminación llama nuestra atención, pero también ilumina otras cosas. Nuestro Señor mismo, más tarde en el Evangelio de Juan, describiría a Juan como una lámpara ardiente y brillante (véase Juan 5:35-36), pero que Juan estaba destinado a brillar en el camino hacia Cristo. Juan mismo en el Evangelio de hoy admite que el Señor lo supera antes de que existiera antes de que Juan fuera creado. La luz de su misión palidece en comparación con la verdadera luz que venía a iluminar a cada hombre. El y todos nosotros estamos llamados a ser las mejores versiones de nosotros mismos. 2do domingo del Tiempo Ordinario: Para que podamos vivir fielmente como administradores de Dios, cumpliendo el plan que tenía para cada uno de nosotros cuando nos formó en el útero. "Ahora el Señor ha hablado, quien me formó como su sirviente desde el vientre..." Isaías 49: 5 Dios nos ha dado a cada uno diferentes dones. Para que el plan de Dios funcione, tienes que hacer lo que Dios te está llamando a hacer y yo tengo que hacer lo que Dios me está llamando a hacer. ¿Y adivina qué? ¡Dios nos ha dado a cada uno un plan diferente! Entonces, deja de compararte con los demás. No dejes que la envidia y los celos entren en tu vida. Agradece los dones que Dios te ha dado y compártelos generosamente con los demás.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK The person need not be at death’s door for the sacrament to

be administered. In fact, the Church recommends very

strongly that it be administered when the person becomes

ill, and not wait until death is approaching.

25 años con Padre Dan!

Querida Familia Parroquial, El sábado 22 de febrero de 2020,

nuestra comunidad parroquial celebrara 25 años del Padre Dan

como nuestro pastor con una misa bilingüe a las 5:30 pm en la

iglesia principal y una recepción después en el Centro de

Actividades Parroquiales. Por favor marque su calendario para

que pueda asistir a este evento especial reconociendo los 25

años del Padre Dan como nuestro pastor en San Jerónimo. Para

El 22 de febrero a las 5:30 PM la Misa cambiará de inglés a Bilingüe en la celebración del Aniversario de Padre Dan.

¿POR QUE LOS PADRINOS Y MADRINAS DE

BAUTISMO TIENEN QUE ESTAR CASADOS POR LA

IGLESIA? El ser padrino o madrina, no solo de Bautismo,

sino de cualquier Sacramento, representa a la misma Iglesia. No es solo porque es alguien de la familia, conocido, o el que va a pagar la fiesta. Los padrinos y madrinas, representan en ese momento a nuestra Iglesia. Y si la representan lo deben hacer de manera completa. Tenemos muy seguido solicitudes para bautizar pidiendo que alguna pareja que está casados solo por la ley civil y no por la Iglesia, sean los padrinos. La respuesta es NO pueden, porque entonces NO están representando completamente a la Iglesia. No los juzgamos porque si o por que no se han casado por la Iglesia, eso es algo personal, pero si están queriendo ser padrinos por la Iglesia es porque van a dar ejemplo de vida a su ahijado(a) viviendo su fe y recibiendo sus sacramentos. El ahijado o ahijada esta “viendo” en sus padrinos que el Sacramento del Matrimonio no es necesario, y la realidad es que necesitamos a Dios en nuestras vidas y dar ejemplo de su presencia en todo lo que hacemos. Si invitando a Dios al casarnos por la Iglesia, nos va como nos va, ¿qué pasa si no lo tenemos?

MIEMBRO REGISTRADO DE UNA IGLESIA? En nuestra Arquidiócesis de Galveston-Houston, se nos sugiere que seamos miembros registrados de la parroquia a la que acudimos con frecuencia. Los beneficios de ser miembro registrado de San Jerónimo incluyen: Recibir sacramentos tales como bautizos, matrimonio - Recibir bendición de quinceañeras Misas de Funeral - Visita y comunión a los enfermos confinados en sus hogares o en hospitales del área. San Jerónimo mantiene un archivo de su membresía y donaciones para si en alguna ocasión necesita una carta de recomendación (para migración). Al final del año, le enviamos por correo un estado de cuenta de sus donaciones para que haga su deducción en los impuestos/IRS. Descuento en la colegiatura de las escuelas Católicas. Ayuda con comida y ropa de San Vicente de Paul. Se puede ganar una hermosa Biblia en cada misa por medio de su sobre. Y en cuanto a nosotros, este registro nos sirve para saber a cuantas familias servimos. Es muy importante dar un ejemplo positivo a nuestros hijos. Esta práctica se puede pasar de generación en generación. Lo invitamos a que seriamente reconsidere el registrarse en San Jerónimo el tercer domingo de cada mes después de la Misa de 12 medio día.
