  • As we hear the various accounts of the appearances of the risen Christ to his disciples we notice that

oftentimes they did not recognise him. There was something in his physical appearance that was different.

Mary Magdalen thought he was the gardener: it was only when he uttered “Mary” that she recognised him.

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus journeyed with him for some hours without recognising him.

The disciples fishing on the lake initially failed to recognise that the man on the shore was Jesus.

But while his physical appearance may have been different, there is an absolute consistency in his person

and teaching. Throughout his earthly ministry Jesus constantly taught about the need for forgiveness. We

must forgive those who wrong is not 7 times but 77 times (that is, always). We must pray each day, “forgive

us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” And here, in this first appearance to the

disciples in the upper room, he immediately talks about forgiveness – “for those whose sins you forgive,

they are forgiven, for those whose sins you retain they are retained.”

In these words lie the biblical basis for the sacrament of reconciliation or Confession. But they have

relevance for all of us as we all have the possibility to forgive others or to hold them in unforgiveness. And

what a terrible thing it would be for ourselves and the other if we hold them in unforgiveness. Let us always

remember that while forgiveness cannot change the past it can make a future possible. On this Divine

Mercy Sunday, as we contemplate the forgiveness of God, let us pray for the graces we need to extend

    forgiveness and mercy to others.

Second Sunday of Easter (Year C)

    28th April, 2019

following – Dawn Lloyd and The Goondiwindi Regional Council for

supplying the palms for Palm Sunday; Dawn Clancy for the beautiful

flowers for the Church and to Rose and the Choir for leading us in

    song.

Again, a thank you to all involved, it was greatly appreciated.

  • Introduction

Today, we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. The church teaches that St. Faustina, a 20th-century Polish nun, recorded revelations that she received from Jesus

who, as she wrote in her diary, desired that “a Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls.” The

readings tell the story of God’s abundant mercy and love for us. We ask for the grace to more clearly

respond to these great signs and wonders of mercy and love that God continues to bestow on us and our

    world.

    First Reading Acts 5:12-16

Many signs and wonders were done among the people

    Responsorial Psalm

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting

    Second Reading Rev 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19

I am the first and the last, the one who lives

ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! You believe in me, Thomas, because you have

seen me; Happy those who have not seen me, but still

    believe!

    ALLELUIA!

    Gospel John 20:19-31

Blessed are those who have not seen and have

    believed

Prayers of the Faithful May the people of Sri Lanka and Singhalese people around the world know the support and concern of the nations of the world, as we pray comfort for all who are grieving and healing for all the injured.

    Christ, graciously hear us.

May the faith of Singhalese Catholics be strong at this time, centred upon Jesus Christ, who declared through the apostle John, I am your brother and share your sufferings. Christ, hear us.

    Christ, graciously hear us.

May those who struggle with their Christian faith, and those who search for a faith, find in the experience of the apostle Thomas, the grace to discover the risen Jesus in a new way, so that they accept him as Lord and God.

    Christ, hear us.

    Christ, graciously hear us.

May May all who died in the church and hotel bombings

in Sri Lanka on the Sunday of the Resurrection

come to Jesus Christ, the Living One, the First and

the Last, who holds the keys of death, and be taken

into eternal life, peace and joy. We also remember

    Christ, hear us.

    Christ, graciously hear us

Let us pray together...... Father, with St Thomas we acclaim Jesus as our Lord and God, and as we give thanks for every blessing received, we will put all our trust in Jesus, who lives and reigns forever and ever. AMEN
