SECOND TIME AROUND Folk Club Newsletter ‘The Bolton Bullfrog’ : due on 16th!

Our first three meets under the new format have been excellent music- and atmosphere-wise, but numbers were not quite what we hoped for. Maybe more of you will be attracted by upcoming nights with some extremely fine emerging talent on 2 October and Bernard Wrigley on 16th.
Read a review of Phil Harrison and Paul Carbuncle overleaf – my friend Eric’s resume has been posted on Facebook.

We had a very good Remembrance Night for Pete Holland with his family present and excellent songs and tributes throughout. I think tthey were surprised how well thought-of he was and could understand why he liked folk music and folk clubs so much with the excellent music and fellowship.
Youth is obviously the future of folk clubs so come and see Jake Burns with Sophie Percival on 2 October: two young and exciting new singer-songwriters. John

We had a lovely evening on 25th, paying tribute to our friend and fellow folkie Pete Holland (pictured left, in 1974). Most performers chose songs that were part of Pete’s vast repertoire or which in some way were associated with him, and many shared fond memories or anecdotes. We were delighted to welcome members of Pete’s family, including his brother, Dave, who went away recognizing how loved and cherished Pete had been in the folk music fraternity. Fittingly, the night ended with a rousing chorus of “Let Union Be In All Our Hearts.” £75 was raised for Cancer Research UK.
Bernard Wrigley – get tickets in advance, we expect a sell-out!

The first night of the new season (11 September) saw a good turnout with ‘regulars’, ‘occasionals’ and unexpected guests perform a variety of material that typifies the Second Time Around ethos.
John gave a lovely rendering of John Denver’s ‘Leaving On A jet Plane’ whilst Phil (Hind) led us in a rousing version of ‘Rolling Home’ with full-throated three-part harmony in the chorus. We welcomed Bob and Sue from Ilkeston – Sue did a bit of blues followed by something as old as the hills, whilst Bob played a great Trevor Lucas song and another by Leon Rosselson.
Andy and Dave played a bit of jazz whilst Steve stuck to his trad sound. Colin played an obscure Dylan song and Joe had managed to find an equally
2
obscure comic number – and then helped out Dave (classical guitar) by playing jaw’s harp on a piece by Bach (we’re nothing if not eclectic!). Chris, John (Mc), Helen and Phil Harrison also performed.
Phil was one of two guests the following week, 18 September, sharing the bill with Paul Carbuncle. This was a terrific evening with the audience able to enjoy their contrasting styles. Paul’s guitar playing is driving and energetic, mainly fast-strumming with some ‘picked’ runs, often on the lower strings, whilst Phil employs an intricate finger-style accurately replicating the arrangements of Richard Thompson Bert Jansch, and the like. Complementing his ‘punk’ appearance, Paul’s vocal delivery is energetic and compelling, whilst Phil’s is more

mellifluous. He specialised in detailed arrangements of traditional or contemporary songs, including his fabulous rendition of Thompson’s ‘Bee’s Wing’. Paul played mainly trad material, breathing new life into many a familiar ditty, as well as self-penned numbers such as his anti-war ‘Chopping Onions’, a very strong song.
Overall, we had an evening rich in variety and contrasting styles that was greatly appreciated by all who were there. CT

For their ‘first time around’ we’re delighted to welcome two exciting new talents to ‘The Second Time Around’
on Friday 2 October. Jake Burns recently appeared at the Robin Hood Folk Festival at Newstead Abbey. He lists his influences as Ralph McTell, Simon and Garfunkel and Bob Dylan and performs both his own songs and ‘covers’.
Also appearing is Sophie Percival, a young singer and songwriter from Leicester.
See and hear these two brilliant new local musicians at The Second Time Around, Friday 2 October – upstairs at the White Lion Bar and Kitchen,
Middle Street, Beeston.
