Brisighella in English

• Brisighella is an ancient medieval town and spa centre in the Lamone valley and it is situated at the foot of three rocky peaks: the first one is dominated by the Clock Tower the second one by the Rocca Manfrediana and the third by the Monticino Sanctuary.

• This area was inhabited in ancient times but the village originated in the 13th century when the commander Maghinardo Pagani built an important fortress on one of the three peaks.

• In the 14th century the Manfredi family, lords of Faenza, built their fortress on a second peak. Then this fortress was conquered by Cesare Borgia , the Venetians and finally by the troops of thre Pope.

• The Medieval village consists of a labyrinth of ancient streets and stairs in the chalk around the main square: Piazza Carducci.

• Brisighella has a thermal centre known for centuries for its sulphurous waters suitable for the treatment of the respiratory tract. This is also the ideal place to relax and get fit thanks to the spa treatments: mud and bathing therapies.

• During the year in this town several tourist and cultural events take place: The Medieval Festival reviving a world of ancient magic and medieval atmosphere between June and July, the Four Autumn Featival celebrating the typical products of this area: the delicious “mora romagnola” ( a celebrated Romagna breed of pig), the pear ”volpina”, the truffle and the olive.

• Actually Brisighella offers a great variety of high quality products: the famous “ Brisighello” oil, different kinds of wines (for example Sangiovese and Albana) and charcuterie that can be found in several fine restaurants of the town.

• Finally trekking and mountain bike lovers can visit the natural area of the Carné Park and the Tanaccia Cave and the Chalk Vein.

Local historical attractions

• On the three rocky peaks stand: • Rocca Manfrediana : It was built by Francesco Manfredi in 1310 then restored and completed by the Venetians in

1509. It is an example of medieval stronghold. Now it has been restored and you can have wonderful views of the whole valley.

• Clock Tower : it was built in 1290 by Maghinardo Pagani as a defence and to control the surrounding area . It was restored in 1850 and a clock was added. It has a 19th century bulwark structure but a medieval basement.

• Monticino Sanctuary : this sanctuary dates back to the 8th century and it is devoted to the Virgin Mary. There are frescos by the painter S. Lega (19th century)

• In the centre of the town • Ancient Via del Borgo or Road of the Donkeys : it is an elevated and covered 12th century street which is enlighted

by half-arches of various size. It was built as a defensive fortification then became the trail for caravans of donkeys going to the chalk quarries. People working in the chalk vein lived in this place with their families : their houses were upstairs and the stables downstairs.

• Palazzo Maghinardo : Town Hall a Neoclassical style building in Piazza Marconi • Civic Museum “Giuseppe Ugonia” : it houses the works of the lithographer Giuseppe Ugonia (1881- 1944) and a

collection of 19th and 20th century prints donated by S. Morselli • In the surrounding area • San Giovanni in Ottavo or Pieve del Tho : situated at about 1km far from Brisighella. It was built around the fifth

century and then rebuilt in an extended form between the 11th century and the 12th century. It’s called “in ottavo” because it stands at the eighth mile of the ancient Roman road that ran from Faenza to Tuscany. According to a legend this church was built at the behest of Galla Placidia (daughter of Theodosius, the last Roman Emperor). It’s a church in a Roman style with a nave and two aisles.

• The old fountain :It is the oldest public fountain of the town . It was built in 1490 an provided water from the chalk vein.

HADLEIGH CASTLE

• John Constable is one of the most important English romantic painters of landscapes. • IN HIS WORKS THE MAIN INTEREST IS THE CONTEMPLATION OF NATURE AND THE LANDSCAPE IS A

WAY TO COMMUNICATE FEELINGS. • Between 1821 and 1822 he made several studies about the sky, especially clouds he used for his

paintings where weather elements are painted in detail and paid great attention to light effects. • In a letter Constable wrote:” In a landscape the sky is a dominant element : it is the source of light

in nature and reigns above everything” • He visited Hadleigh castle in 1814 and made a minute drawing of the castle. The painting was

executed in 1829 and exhibited at the royal academy. • In “Hadleigh castle” the ruins of the castle are surrounded by a sky full of threatening clouds that

are the most lively part of the painting. seagulls flying restless seem to announce the rain. • There are two little men but they are not relevant as in Romantic art man is melt with nature. • Constable painted this picture after the death of his wife so the desolate landscape and the ruins of

the castle communicate his sorrow. • The colours of the sky are spread almost violently moving fast in every direction through

brushstrokes of pure colour that seem to anticipate the technique of the impressionists. • The contrast of light and shadow gives a strong energy. actually constable‘s dynamic technique is

expressed also through brushstrokes of pure white like spots of sun ( on the meadows near the Thames)
