teaching how to learn -• make the students aware of how learning is

working and why a method will help them to learn better

• especially helping to visualize the subject, using the capacity of both brain hemispheres (brain gym, using pictures, colours, rhyme and rhythm, relaxing methods…)

Page 16: Secondary School Vaterstetten, Gluckstraße Supporting low achieving pupils 1.Conception 2.Resources Learning facilities Instruction materials and methods

organizing the work•homework, weekly working plans and open learning situations with different demands according to the abilities•basic exercises to help to close the gap•using concrete material to explain •getting information to a topic from several directions (history, art, German…)•individual tasks, individual time-frames•time for repetition again and again •using the time during open situations to help and instruct the low- achievers individually•no archiving of used work sheets to spare this time for learning

Supporting the success•writing with a pencil to make corrections easier,

if the student wants to•give the opportunity to try out and realize what is

right and what is wrong•avoiding mistakes by offering help•emphasize the success•don’t mark to high a mistake

Page 18: Secondary School Vaterstetten, Gluckstraße Supporting low achieving pupils 1.Conception 2.Resources Learning facilities Instruction materials and methods

Supporting low achieving pupils

•using exercise books without lines (after removing the line paper the entry looks good even the student isn’t able to write in lines accurately)

2. Resources Instruction materials and methods

•Let the students copying pictures instead of clueing a copy into the exercise book. That supports the

eye-hand-coordination.

3. ProjectsAssociated classes

Being responsible for younger children have a strong influence on the students. In the work with the associated classes they took up the responsibility for the younger one during meetings at school or during excursions. The younger one often adore the older students strengthening their self-confidence.

3. Projects

Art

Art is a very important part to develop ones personality. The low achiever often show a big talent in arts but often don‘t value it. We help them to use and show their talent not only during lessons but also during projects.

•creating a logogram for our school

•give our wastepaper-baskets a better shape

•designing the school inside and outside

•designing the school during the seasons

3. ProjectsBehaviour

Throughout the year there are special lessons where all grades get mixed to learn how to

behave in special situations: e.g. …when I have to enter an office

…when I have to ask for s.th.

…on the table / in the restaurant

…in confrontation with the other gender

…in an embarrassing situation

What will my image be in public if I behave like…?

3. ProjectsPresentation

To learn to present oneself

•in the class by presenting the conclusion of a group work or a paper

•in front of the parents of ones class at special meetings

•in front of other classes and visitors as we call it “wir zeigens euch” (we show it to you)

4. Optional subjects

Special lessons offer the opportunity to show other abilities as usually necessary:

•taking photos or making a film

•gardening and planting

•driving a mono-cycle or dancing

•using the workshop to create a work-piece of one’s own ideas

•organizing events for the other pupils (cinema, bowling, ice-skating…)

•running

5. Practical trainingThroughout the year especially the upper grades (7 to 9) get a practical training for several days. The students choose what kind of business they want to explore. They themselves have to make contact to firms. Of course if necessary teachers help to find a place for the training.

There is also the possibility to volunteer for more practical training during holidays or after school.

The students can show what they are up to in the chosen business. Making a good impression these practical trainings often help to get an apprenticeship in spite of bad marks.

6. Whole day classes

Since two years we can offer classes with lessons till afternoon. Here there is much more time to help children with learning deficiencies

•to close the gaps

•to develop their individuality

•to realise where the strength is

•to accept the weakness
