Our Charities  

Sahayta The  mission  of  Sahayta,  a  non‐profit  organization  based  in  Punjab,  India,  is  to  provide holistic ‐  financial, emotional and social ‐ support to people afflicted with cancer. Sahayta means  help  and  support  in  Hindi,  and  our  intention  is  to  instill  confidence,  hope  and courage  in  the  minds  of  patients  and  their  family  members.  Our  emblem  indicates  our efforts to reach out wherever help is needed and light the light of life.   Sponsors for Educational Opportunity           Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1963 as one of New York City's first mentoring programs for high school students of color. Over the past four decades SEO has expanded its programs to benefit more than 5,000 young people, helping them develop throughout high school, college, and their careers.    The SEO Scholars Program prepares motivated New York City public high school students to earn admission and succeed at the nation's most selective colleges and universities.  The program currently assists more than 800 high school and college students of color each year, offering a comprehensive roadmap to selective college admissions and career success. SEO has paved the way to selective college admissions for some of NYC's most underserved students, while developing a reputation as a premier college preparation program. We provide academic preparation, guidance, mentoring, and enriching life experiences that prepare students to take leadership roles in all areas of their lives.     Teach for All           In response to requests from groups in several countries across the world who wanted to replicate its models, Teach For America and Teach First collaborated on a project with the pro‐bono assistance of a team from McKinsey & Company.  Together they sought to understand the experiences of other international organizations, the needs of the entrepreneurs who were seeking assistance, and the enablers of impact in their model. The end result was the plan for Teach For All.  Teach For All is a global network of independent, locally governed, locally funded organizations that are committed to building the movement to eliminate educational inequity in their countries by enlisting their most promising future leaders in the effort.  Local organizations that are part of the Teach For All network are independent, locally governed, locally funded organizations. Teach For All’s central operation supports the development of these local organizations by sharing

programmatic best practices, building private and public sector support, anticipating organizational development needs, and fostering a global network to accelerate learning and create participant, alumni and organizational exchange opportunities.    

UMBELE                 

Umbele is a foundation whose main objective is to channel money given by you to some of the poorest citizens in Africa through its network of missionaries in the most direct and efficient way possible, without losing resources along the way. The foundation guarantees that absolutely all of the money donated will go to missionaries in Africa: Our motto is “One Euro Equals One Euro.” That is, one euro given by you is one euro that will arrive in Africa. The financial expenses and transfer fees are paid by Banc Sabadell and the administrative expenses are paid by the patrons of the foundation. In sum, Umbele is a channel through which we, citizens from all over the world, can help the people that most need our help, in a transparent and efficient way. We ask that you support some of the neediest citizens of the world by donating money ‐no matter how small the amount‐ and help bring back their future through our foundation.

Logistical Overview  Below are a few administrative items to help us through the evening:  Auction Format: 

We will have two types of auction this evening:  Live and Silent.  The live auction will be led by one of the section’s great entertainers, Kris Fredrickson. Kris will take the stage to orchestrate the bids at two different points throughout the night.  If you like the item or just want to bid up your fellow section‐mates, raise your arrow (or hand) and state your price.  Kris will have the power to declare the ultimate winners.    Please note that several items (both in the live and silent auctions) are group items. Items that could be bid on by a group are denoted with an astericks (*). Please be sure to consider  your group before the bidding begins. Also, please note that the starting bids for all group items are the total (not per person) value unless otherwise stated.    The silent auction will be held throughout the evening. To place a bid, find your desired item and put your name and bid on the corresponding bid sheet. The item’s number and description will be on the top for your convenience.   Each successive bid on the auction sheet must be higher than the preceding bid by at least the stated increment listed on the top of each sheet.  At the end of the evening, the Charity Auction committee will remove the sheets and the last bidder with the highest price will be the winner.   

  Payment:   

Auction gifts can be paid with either cash or check.  Please visit the “check‐out counter” to make your payment prior to leaving the event for those gifts less than $500 in  value.  For those gifts greater than $500 in value, the deadline for payment (to Jamie) is Monday, May 5th.

LIVE AUCTION – Round One  

 Lot # 1001:  Irish Pub Crawl: 10% of personal spending in Ireland is for alcoholic beverages… help the Diaspora represent!*

Lot # 1005:  Fully catered weekend retreat in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania* 

Donor: Paul Laszlo Working in NY this summer?  Escape the heat and humidity to the rolling green hills of Pennsylvania.  Weekend package for 2 or 3 people includes chauffeured (by Paul) door to door luxury transportation from anywhere in NYC or Northern New Jersey to the Poconos, 2 nights accommodation (Friday & Saturday), all meals (luxuriously prepared and served by Paul) and beverages (within reason).  You will enjoy lake‐view accommodation, access to a community swimming pool, tennis & basketball courts and great fishing (any actual fish you catch will be cleaned and served by Paul).  Paul will also provide chauffer service on‐demand throughout the weekend to local attractions including several golf courses, antique shops, vineyards, a flea‐market and even a local casino.  The area is also great for hiking, mountain biking and rafting.  Package available on a mutually agreed weekend between 1 June and 31 August. Starting Bid:  $100

LIVE AUCTION – Round Two   Lot # 2001: Casino Night – Learn to Gamble* 

Donor: Darren Abrahamson & Evan Sroka Darren and Evan will escort 3 lucky winners to Foxwoods/Mohegan Sun and explain all the ins and outs of gambling.  The trip includes transportation, dinner at a restaurant TBD, and unlimited free alcohol (courtesy of the casino).  Winning bidders will figure out a date.  ** Note that this could be a late night  Starting Bid:  $150  

 Lot # 2002:  Guys’ Night with Alan and Kris*  Donor: Alan Ghelberg & Kris Fredrickson Alan and Kris will host 2 or 3 bidders for dinner, drinks, and (probably) unplanned adventure.  Previous such nights have included accidentally entertaining a group of married women for 2 hours before thinking to look at their ring fingers, lecturing a 911 operator on proper call center operating procedures at 3:00am, and almost getting attacked by a police dog while trying to hail a cab outside one of Allston's fine late‐night dining establishments (IHOP). Estimated Value: $120,000.  Starting Bid: $50   Lot # 2003:  A Weekend in the Woods…* Donor: Diana Ellsworth Escape from the big bad city of Boston to a weekend in the woods.  Trip will include transportation to and from the White Mountains of New Hampshire, all relevant meals, and accommodations in a Dartmouth Outing Club‐owned cabin.  (This will be a bit on the roughing it side of things – think gas lighting, wood‐burning stove and a privy…)  Outdoor activities can include hiking (as leisurely or kick‐your‐ass as you desire), lying about in the sun, and canoeing (depending on weekend chosen and lake‐side cabin availability).  Come on, you know you’ve been looking for a chance to actually use the 14 Nalgene water bottles you got from recruiters this year… For 4 or fewer people. Starting Bid:  $80

 Lot # 3003:  Full Italian First Class Home­Made Dinner* Donor: Marco DiFalco A full Italian dinner for 1 or 2 people (most likely starting with pasta al pesto – with original pesto from Liguria!).  The meal will take place at your house (need your kitchen). The meal is for you and your partner? You and a friend? Anyone can bid, but at least one participant has to be a GIRL (unless a couple is participating). Sorry for this, but I am not really game for having a one‐on‐one dinner with one of our cool male section mates (not even for charity)! Starting Bid:  $25    

Lot # 3004: South American Barbecue*  Donor: Nicolas Maslowski  &  Eduardo Weinstein We will serve a barbecue for 4 people on the day of their choice. The barbecue will include meat and chicken cooked in the Argentinean style, served with Chilean wine and Venezuelan Rum.  PS: If required the barbecue could be with kosher meat and kosher wines. Starting Bid:  $30

 Dinners (con’t)  Lot # 3005:  Japanese Cooking Lessons and Dinner with Mama Kobayashi* Donor: Mama Kobayashi Come learn how to cook Japanese food with Kimi’s mom, Mama Kobayashi.  She will be teaching a small group (up to 3 people) how to prepare simple everyday dishes that you can easily prepare at home yourself.  The menu will include miso soup, maki sushi, salad, and others.  At the end of the night you will of course have a chance to sit down and try out the food that you prepared. The date for this event will be set at the convenience of the winners.  Starting Bid:  $30   Lot # 3006:  Spanish Dinner for Two with Renowned Chefs, Leticia and Quim* Donor: Leticia & Quim Cristia If you missed the Spanish cuisine lesson, or if you came and simply loved it and want some more, Leticia and Quim will prepare some great Spanish dishes for you to enjoy! By the way, did you know that the Mediterranean cooking style is known to be one of the healthiest in the world? We will also enjoy great Spanish wine and deserts.  Dinner is for 2 people, although we can host some more if needed! Starting Bid:  $25

 Lot # 3016:  Breakfast with VC Big Shot Donor: Ramana Nanda Felda Hardymon (General Partner at Bessemer Ventures since 1981, and on the Forbes Midas List for umpteen years..) has very kindly agreed to have breakfast with 1 student from Section G in September to talk about anything they would like to, including career advice.  Aside from being extremely knowledgeable about the VC industry, Felda is just a delightful person, so I'm sure it will be a very enjoyable experience for whoever gets to meet with him.  I'd be happy to introduce the winning student to Felda once the auction is over.   Starting Bid: $40

Parties and Gatherings  Lot # 3017:  Date with hunk­a­baby Alexander Wasti Donor: Ali Wasti One hour date with hunk‐a‐baby Alexander. Enjoy fun toys, games and songs. Indoor swing and exercise gym included. PS: Baby comes with a clean diaper. Starting Bid:  $20   Lot # 3018: Jens’ and Mogan’s Private Concert for You and Your Friends*  

Donor: Jens Van Nieuwenborgh and  Mogan Subramaniam Jens and Mogan will perform an exclusive show just for you and your friends. Filled with your favorite songs, this performance will last approximately an hour. The date and venue of the performance will be decided with you, but performance will be concluded by end of EC year. Jens and Mogan will do their best to include your song requests. Starting Bid:  $50  

 Lot # 3019:  All­Inclusive (Surprise) Birthday Party* Donor: Judy & Eli Portnoy Celebrate your (or that special someone’s) birthday in style this year, with this all‐inclusive birthday package. Start out the day receiving flowers, next invite your closest friends for a dinner extravaganza, and follow it up with a night out at a bar. We will handle everything, from the flowers, to the dinner invites, to organizing the bar outing (NOT open bar, sorry). This can be given to 1 birthday boy or girl, but the dinner will accommodate a total of 10 people (including Judy & Eli). Party has to happen before October 6th (which is when Judy starts work). Starting Bid:  $75   Lot # 3020: Poker Party!!*
