Sectional notes These notes are intended to assist in locating particular graves at Macquarie Park. The section names, grave numbers and most row numbers are as allocated by the cemetery. Row numbers in most lawns have been ascribed by SAG for the purpose of making clear where rows start and end, and also to assist in locating graves. However, they are not part of the cemetery record. The absence of a section from these notes indicates that the numbering system and location of graves within a section is expected to present the researcher no difficulty. Grave numbers are inscribed on most plaques, and on some headstones or kerbs. In some cases they have been obtained from cemetery records. Most rows have two sides, which we have named as A and B; a few have a third side (C). In most monumental areas and some lawn areas the sides are “back to back”; in others they are “facing” across a grass strip. In some cases the graves in a row are numbered (e.g.) 1, 3, 5, 7 etc on one side, and the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 etc used on the other side. We refer to this system as "alternate numbering". In other cases the graves are numbered in strict numerical sequence (e.g.) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. We refer to this system as "sequential numbering". If in doubt about the system in use, viewing a Nearby graves report will generally reveal the pattern of numbering. In some sections, or in particular rows, the situation is confused by the use of both systems, apparently as a result of the section being extended in area at some stage. The notes below alert the user to these situations, but it is impossible in these notes to provide detailed guidance. A researcher wishing to locate a particular grave is always recommended to print a Nearby graves report , as these will generally give a better idea of the sequence and names on headstones near the target grave. However, in some sections, the graves are listed in strict numerical sequence, without attempting to mirror the way in which they appear on the ground. This applies in areas where the graves are not arranged in a readily described row pattern. Many sections have been extended at the edges in recent years: by adding plots closer to existing pathways; or by removing existing pathways. Such additional plots use the number of the plot alongside, and extend it alphabetically. For example, four plots added alongside Grave 37 will normally be designated 37A to 37D, and should therefore be readily found. If in doubt, viewing a Nearby graves report will generally make clear where to find a particular grave. Sectional notes

These notes are intended to assist in locating particular graves at Macquarie Park.

A researcher wishing to locate a particular grave is always recommended to print a Nearby graves report, as these will generally give a better idea of the sequence and names on headstones near the target grave.

Non-denominational

The Non-denominational area of Macquarie Park comprises the Baby Lawns and Section J, described below:

Section J monumental areaThere are four monumental rows:

Row 1: Shown in cemetery records as Lutheran, but the inscriptions on Side B are mainly names of Greek ethnic origin.Row 2: A mixture of Greek and ArmenianRow 3: Largely Greek Orthodox, with some Armenian. Most of Side B of Row 3 lies under the “Martyrs’ Memorial” and

Row 3 of the Armenian Lawn, which commences behind the memorial.Row 4: Lies under the Martyrs’ Memorial and the Armenian Lawn, which commences behind the memorial.

Transcription of these rows was updated in May 2003.

NB: The Armenian Lawn (see below) part of Section J also has a Row 3 and could therefore lead to confusion. Accordingly this CD identifies Row 3 graves as either “Section J Armenian Lawn” or “Section J Monumental”, as appropriate.

Martyrs’ MemorialThe Martyrs’ Memorial is inscribed: “This Alter-Memorial – ‘In Sacred memory of the Armenian Martyrs of the 1915 Holocaust was erected under the Patronage of His Holiness Vacken I, Catholicos of all Armenians & Blessed by Bishop Aghan Baliozian, Primate of the Australian Diocese, constructed by the Armenian Near East Relief Society in conjunction with the Armenian Church in Sydney. April 1989.’ ”

Armenian LawnIndividual graves of people of Armenian ethnic origin may be found within various denominational areas at Macquarie Park. However, the bulk of such graves may be found in the Armenian Lawn area of Section J.

Transcription of the plaques was completed in April 2000. Details relating to subsequent deaths were added in May 2003, but some new plaques relating to deaths prior to April 2000 may have been overlooked.

A large number of the plaques had inscriptions in Armenian only, or in both Armenian and English. In the former case we relied totally on cemetery records for the information on this CD. We transcribed all information in English and where this did not include both name and date of death we generally filled the gaps by reference to cemetery records, noting the source. Researchers are advised to check for themselves any case where “Armenian inscr” is indicated in the Inscription field.

The lawn commences behind the Martyrs’ Memorial, commencing with “Row 3”. Such a row also exists in the monumental part of Section J and could therefore lead to confusion. Accordingly this CD identifies Row 3 graves as either “Section J Armenian Lawn” or “Section J Monumental”, as appropriate.

Lawn details are:Rows 1 & 2 do not existRow 3: One side onlyRow 5: Abnormal grave sequence – high numbers on Side A; low numbers on Side BRow 18: Graves 1-15 do not exist

Baby lawns

Burials of stillborn children, of babies and infants may be found in most areas of the cemetery. In recent years burials of many children up to three years old have taken place in three “baby lawns” set aside for them. Transcription of these lawns was updated in May 2003:

Baby Lawn 1: 24 rows, with graves generally numbered sequentially. However, the following quirks apply:Row 11: numbered 164-170, then 153-163Row 13: numbered 233-239, then 189-199Row 14: numbered 240-246, then 200-210Graves 247-251 do not existRows 17-24 are separated from Rows 1-16 by Presbyterian Section H1 – see map below.

Baby Lawn 2: 10 rowsBaby Lawn 3: 5 rows

Catholic crypts, vaults & mausoleums

CryptsThere are five separate blocks of crypts, labelled A to E, located In a circular area adjoining the Mausoleum of Christ the Redeemer and surrounding a central statue. Transcriptions were updated in May 2003.

Vault Areas 1 & 2 have some further crypts – see below.

Christ the Redeemer MausoleumThe mausoleum was opened on 8 November 1999. Only a few crypts are currently in use and the CD does not record unused crypts. Crypt numbers are taken from cemetery records. See layout below – the numbers indicate the horizontal position – the first digit of the crypt number on the CD indicates the row height. Transcriptions were updated in May 2003.

Sacred Heart MausoleumAt the time of transcription (May 2003) this comprised six bays of crypts without any numbering or other identification. For the purpose of transcription the bays were numbered 1 to 6 from left to right. Crypts without inscriptions were not recorded.

Mini-cryptsFree-standing mini-crypts are located in several places throughout the cemetery and transcriptions were updated in May 2003. Those identified as CC and A to I are located opposite the A J Hare Lawn, on the eastern side of A J Hare Avenue.

Mini-crypts J to O are located adjacent to Freeman Avenue at the northern end of Section K.

Mini-crypts P to V are located at the end of Section FF.

Mini-crypts W to Y are located at the start of block 10 of the Catholic Lawn.

VaultsCatholic vaults are to be found in two main areas. Each vault is generally clearly identified by one or more family names, and

Page 12: Sectional notes - Society of Australian Genealogistscatalogue.sag.org.au/attachments/31954/Macquarie Park... · 2015. 2. 3. · Researchers are advised to check for themselves any

these are entered in the Inscription field of the CD. Any other names inscribed on the vault, or able to be discerned inside the vault, are then listed in the normal way. Transcriptions were updated in May 2003.

Area 1 lies across the road from the Mausoleum of Christ the Redeemer, arranged in six curved rows. In a few cases only the vault identity is apparent – no other indication of individuals within. Exceptionally, vaults are also identified by a number or letter, but generally these are provided only by cemetery records. The CD lists the vaults in the order in which they are found in each row – vault numbering is somewhat erratic, as indicated by the map below. The smaller vaults are

There are also three vaults on the other side of the road, abutting the mausoleum and Section G, and two more a few metres further down the road, backing onto Row 6 of Section G.

The smallest vaults on the map below have crypts on an external wall; larger vaults have them inside.

Area 2 is located opposite Block 15 of the Catholic Lawn. The area is not arranged in readily described rows or order but most vaults are clearly numbered; other numbers were taken from cemetery records. The vaults are listed on the CD in numerical order - see the map below for the actual location.

Vaults 4, 14B, 16, 22, 26, 28-35 and 36-40 do not exist.Vault 54B is not named to a particular family or families and has 12 individual crypts on an external wall; Vault 42C has four on an external wall, in addition to those inside.

Catholic lawns

The Catholic lawns comprise one large area of 71 rows, arranged in five sequences – “the Catholic Lawn” – and a further nineteen numbered “blocks”, each with its own sequence. A further lawn, named Gethsemane, has recently commenced use.

The following map provides an overview of the cemetery, with most Catholic areas shaded dark green. The main Catholic Lawn is indicated in light green lettering, and the various lawn blocks by white numbering. The Gethsemane lawn is shown in orange. Notes on the various lawns – and more detailed maps of a number of them – follow the overview:

The main Catholic lawn is referred to within the cemetery and on this CD simply as the Catholic Lawn. Checking of inscriptions was completed in October 2000. The lawn is arranged as shown on the following plan:

Rows 1 & 2 are placed adjoining Row 7 and 3 (respectively) of Catholic monumental Section U, and separated by Muldoon Circuit. The other rows of the lawn are arranged in five sequences:

Rows 3 to 15, with Row 15 having just one sideRows 16 to 27, with Row 16 having three sidesRows 28 to 38A, the latter having just one sideRows 39 to 51A, the latter having just one sideRows 52 to 70A, with Rows 52, 54, 55 & 70A each having just one side. Each of Rows 55 to 70A is divided by a path.

Row 14, Side B, has an abnormal grave sequence – Graves 119-81, followed by Graves 61A-80Row 16, Side B, has an abnormal grave sequence – Graves 41-35, followed by 24A-34Row 21 – Graves 113-116 lie at the end of Side ARow 53 – Graves 38 & 40 do not exist

“Blocks”The plaques within each “block” are numbered in one sequence, from the first to the last row i.e. each row does not start afresh at plaque 1. We have allotted a number to each “back to back” row of plaques for convenience, but these numbers are not reflected in cemetery records, nor recorded on the plaques themselves.

Blocks 18 & 18AChecking of inscriptions was completed in November 2000. Block 18 has nine rows and behind it is Block 18A with three. These block designations are used in cemetery records and on grave plaques, However, cemetery signage uses the generic “Block 18”. Together with Blocks 15, 17 & 19, the blocks are arranged in a square opposite Vault Area 2.

The three rows of Block 18A are designated for Franciscan Friars. Rows 1 & 3 had no plaques when our transcription finished.

The graves of Side B of Row 4 then follow, with religious names in the Inscription column. Once again, any surnames recorded on the plaques are shown in the Last Name field, and three dashes in the First Name field.

Row 7 was added in 2003 and is one-sided.

Section DChecking of inscriptions was completed in July 2000. The section has 6 rows following the “alternate” numbering system, with odd numbers in Side A of each row, and even numbers in Side B. See map above.

Section EChecking of inscriptions was completed in July 2000. The section has 6 rows. See map above.

Section FChecking of inscriptions was completed in August 2000. The section has 8 rows, with Row 1 having just one side.In Row 4, Grave 40 (Side A) should be read with Grave 40A (Side B); Graves 41 & 42 are on Side B. See map above.

numbered in one sequence for the whole lawn i.e. not a fresh sequence for each row. When we checked our transcriptions in August 2000, Rows 5 and 6 were not in use. See map above.

Section OChecking of inscriptions was completed in August 2000. The section has six rows. See map above.

Section PThe section is divided into five lawn areas, designated for the burial of particular religious orders. The row numbers on this CD have been ascribed by SAG to help researchers and are not indicated on the ground. Rather, the plaques are numbered in one sequence for each lawn i.e. not a fresh sequence for each row. Checking of transcriptions was completed in August 2000. See map above.

The rows were originally divided by a path but this has been removed and two or more extra plots inserted e.g. between Graves 153 & 154 of Section P3 are Graves 153A, 153B, 154B & 154A.

Sections P1 & P2 are used for the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary. They form a single row and the change is apparent only from the numbering of the plaques. See map above.

Section P3 is designated for burial of Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. It has six rows. See map above.

Section P4 is designated for burial of Sisters of St. Joseph - Orange & California, Sisters of Mercy and Poor Sisters of Nazareth. It has two rows. See map above.

Section P5 is designated for burial of Sisters of the Institute Blessed Virgin Mary (I.B.V.M.), Loreto Convent Kirribilli. It has one row. See map above.

Section RSection R has ten rows. As well as regular plots, Row 5 includes a burial lawn for the Society of St Vincent de Paul. Row 9 includes another burial lawn, this one for the St Columbans Mission Society. Checking of transcriptions was completed in August 2000. See map above.

Chinese

Individual graves of people of Chinese ethnic origin are scattered through most denominational areas at Macquarie Park. However, there is also a particular section identified for traditional Chinese monuments, adjoining Presbyterian Section G. Transcriptions are complete to May 2003, at which time the section had 21 rows, numbered 1-12, 15-21, 23 and 23A. Rows 13, 14 and 22 did not exist. The rows have just one side each and are laid out as follows:

The majority of the headstones have inscriptions in Chinese only, or in both Chinese and English. In the former case we relied totally on cemetery records for the information on this CD. We transcribed all information in English and where this did not include both name and date of death we generally filled the gaps by reference to cemetery records, noting the source. Unless noted otherwise on this CD, researchers should assume that the headstones include further or duplicative information in Chinese.

It should be noted that many Chinese monuments are prepared well in advance of death. Some show no inscription at all; others show the full details of a deceased partner and partial details of the surviving partner (often in red or some other contrasting colour). Photos are a feature of many graves, but photos of surviving partners are few. A proportion of the headstones also have inscriptions on their reverse side.

The following grave numbers were not sighted:Row 17: 20Row 23: 7, 17, 22-24, 27 and 31

Other areas designated for traditional Chinese monumentsSection O of the Anglican area of the cemetery has recently been extended to cater for traditional Chinese monuments.. Anglican Section K has a similar area. Sections B & C of the Presbyterian area have been extended along similar lines.

Donors’ memorial garden

This section is located in the Catholic part of the cemetery against the cemetery boundary fence adjacent to Catholic Section FF, but is not in fact designated as Catholic. A bronze plaque mounted on sandstone base is inscribed "Donor's Memorial Garden - This plaque commemorates the many generous people, some of whom are buried here, who have donated their remains to medical science. Their contribution has greatly benefited mankind." A number of small plaques mounted on small concrete posts are amongst the plantings nearby. Transcription of the garden was updated in May 2003.

General LawnsThe General Lawns comprise several non-contiguous areas – Sections M, U & V, together with a number of Anglican sections, form part of a large triangular area in the south-east corner of the cemetery. Another, bounded by A J Hare Avenue and Main Avenue, is designated as the AJ Hare Lawn. On the western side of the cemetery are four lawns named after early Governors of New South Wales. Between them and the A J Hare Lawn is a further area (bounded by Main Avenue and Governors Drive) designated as Section O.

Section MChecking of inscriptions in this section was completed in October 2001. The section commences in rectangular form, located between Anglican sections L and O, and then extends into the large triangular area bounded by Anglican sections D, E, F, L, O, T, S & R..

It has 36 rows in a “back to back” arrangement – for example, Row 6 Side A is back to back with Row 6 Side B.Row 26 – Graves 1-4 do not exist.Row 27 – Graves 1-8 do not existRow 28 – Graves 1-12 do not exist; Graves 21, 22, 39, 40, 101, 102, 119 & 120 were not sightedRow 29 – Graves 1-15 do not exist; Graves 32, 33 & 34 were not sighted.Row 30 – Graves 1-20 do not existRow 31 – Graves 1-22 do not existRow 32 – Graves 1-26 do not existRow 33 – Graves 1-30 do not existRow 34 – Graves 1-33 & 69-72 do not existRow 35 – Graves 1-37 & 67-74 do not existRow 36 – Graves 1-40 & 64-77 do not exist

Governors Drive, across the road from the lawns named for Governors Arthur Phillip and John Hunter.

It comprises 17 rows, numbered 1A & 1-16. Row 1A is a late addition and its graves are identified by letters of the alphabet. The graves in Rows 1-16 are basically ordered in one large numerical sequence, with only minor aberrations. That is, each row does not start a new sequence and while we have ascribed row numbers to assist researchers, the plaque number is sufficient to identify each grave.

New plots have been added to the ends of some rows in recent times – for example, Grave 1590 originally marked the end of Row 15, but three new plots have been added, identified as 1590A, B & C.

Section USome of Section U is designated as part of the Anglican Monumental area of the cemetery – Rows 1-11, each having two sides. See the Anglican notes for further detail. NB: numbers in Row 11 duplicate some numbers in Row 11 of Section U, General Lawn. See below for row layout.

Adjoining the above monumental area is a lawn area, also designated as Section U, but falling within the General Lawn area of the cemetery. The rows in this part are designated Rows 11-14 – with Row 11 having just one side. NB: numbers in Row 11 duplicate some numbers in Row 11 of Section U, Anglican Monumental.

Transcription of Section U, General Lawn, was completed in May 2001.

Section VSome of Section V is designated as part of the Anglican Monumental area – Rows 1-3, each having two sides. See the Anglican notes for further detail.

Adjoining the above monumental area is a lawn area, also designated as Section V, but falling within the General Lawn area of the cemetery. The rows in this part are designated Rows 4-15. See below for row layout.

Row 6 – Grave 99 does not existRow 15 – Grave 63 does not exist

Transcription of Section V, General Lawn, was completed in September 2000.

A J Hare LawnChecking of inscriptions in this section was completed in February 2001 but many new graves were transcribed in April 2003. The section is arranged in four quadrants and comprises 58 rows in a “facing” arrangement – for example, Row 6 Side A faces Row 6 Side B, separated by a grass strip. Thus each pair of “back to back” headstones fall in separate row numbers, while a number of the outward-facing headstones at the end of each quadrant fall in row numbers that have only one side.

Two rows have recently been added to the section at its northern end, designated as Rows A and B. These two rows are in a “back to back” arrangement – that is, each pair of “back to back” headstones lie in the same row number.

Rows 14, 14A, 30, 44 & 58 have only one side. Rows 1 & 29 have three sides – two in the normal sequence, separated by a grass strip, plus another backing onto the second side. See below for row layout.

The two northern quadrants were originally separated by a path but it was removed to provide room for additional graves. However, each physical row in the northern half of the lawn remains two separately numbered rows, e.g. 34 & 48; 35 & 49, etc – the numbering on the plaques is the only means of detecting where the break between the rows occurs.

Extra graves have also been added recently to the roadside end of many rows. As a result, some rows of this lawn have two, or more often three, numbering sequences. Researchers are therefore advised that if they fail to sight a particular grave number in a row, they should be careful to inspect each grave in the row – both sides of the grass strip! – before concluding that the transcribers have erred!

Row 2 – Grave 6 not sightedRow 3 – the usual sequence order is reversed on Side BRow 7 – Grave 26 not sightedRow 31 – has two graves plaques numbered 9 – one at Grave 9, the other after Grave 12.Row 43 – Grave 23 not sightedThere are also a few memorial plaques placed under trees on the perimeter of the lawn. These are all recorded as “Row 0” for the purpose of indexing this CD – viewing a “Nearby graves” report will identify the actual row closest to the particular tree.

Governors’ LawnsSeveral lawns adjoining Governors Drive are named after Governors of New South Wales:

Governor Arthur Phillip – transcription completed August 2001Governor John Hunter – transcription completed August 2001Governor Phillip King – transcription completed August 2001Governor William Bligh – transcription completed June 1999

Each lawn has ten rows, arranged in 5 back-to-back pairs. At the time we completed checking transcriptions, a number of rows had no plaques.

Each of the lawns is numbered separately, in one large sequence per lawn. Thus while we have ascribed row numbers to each lawn to assist researchers, the lawn name and plaque number are sufficient to identify each grave.

New plots have been added to the end of most rows in recent times – for example, Grave 31 originally marked the end of Row 1 of the Governor Phillip Lawn, but four new plots have been added, identified as 31A, B, C & D.

Greek

Individual graves of people of Greek ethnic origin may be found within various denominational areas at Macquarie Park.

Section JHowever, Section J, in the Non-denominational area of Macquarie Park, has a monumental area which gathers a number of graves of Greek ethnic origin.

Row 1: Shown in cemetery records as Lutheran, but the inscriptions on Side B are mainly names of Greek ethnic origin.Row 2: A mixture of Greek and ArmenianRow 3: Largely Greek Orthodox, with some Armenian

Transcription of these rows was completed in May 2003. A number of the plaques or headstones had inscriptions in Greek only, or in both Greek and English. We attempted to extract information of genealogical value from all Greek inscriptions, and to identify any variances between Greek and English versions. While care was taken, researchers are advised to check for themselves any case where “Greek inscr” is indicated in the Inscription field.

Section E1This one-row section recently established alongside Section J is designated for Orthodox burials. It was transcribed in May 2003.

Section DChecking of inscriptions in this section was completed in October 2000. It has twelve rows.

Section EChecking of inscriptions in this section was completed in March 2000. It has seventeen rows.

Section FThis small section had just four rows, numbered 8 to 11 – Rows 1 to 7 did not exist when checking of inscriptions was completed in July 2001.

Jewish LawnWhen checking of the lawn inscriptions was completed in March 2001 it had just six rows. Row 1 lies between Rows 4 & 5 and Row 2 has just one side.

Some plaques in Row 1 are numbered as rows “D1” or “D5”. In May 2003 there was an unused row laid out to the east of Row 2 and numbered on the kerb – also as Row 1!

Jewish Memorial WallsThere are three Memorial Walls for Jewish adjoining the car park outside the cemetery’s Administration and Function Centre. The walls are named for Abba Hillel Silver, Stephen Wise and Leo Baek. Each wall side has 6 rows of 12 or 14 niches for cremated remains. Transcription of these walls was updated in May 2003, with a large number of niches remaining empty at that time.

Rose garden

A circular “memorial rose garden” is situated in Smith Drive, adjacent to Anglican sections F & G and General Lawn Section M. See map below.

Used for the interment of cremated remains, the garden is in two parts – a lower garden surrounding a raised lawn and garden. The lower garden is designated as Section B and comprises three circles of rose bushes, each with one or more plaques arranged alongside. A fourth circle of plaques has been commenced on the inside of the inner (third) row of bushes.

The upper garden comprises three sections: Section A had three circles of rose bushes and accompanying plaques, but a fourth has recently been commenced, between the two outer circles. Section A surrounds Section C, which has two circles of bushes and plaques. This in turn surrounds a small Section D, also arranged in a circle. A number of the plaques in the upper garden are placed out of expected sequence, as noted below.

The perimeter of the upper garden is formed of 363 bricks, some of which also bear a plaque. The bricks are treated as a separate section – the Memorial Border.

Transcription of the garden was updated in May 2003.
