Different and Effective Ways on How to Secure Your Wireless Network

Wireless networking is rapidly becoming the custom for networking at homes, businesses and schools. The introduction of wireless networking can most likely be attributed to not only the user’s love of latest technology, but the ease of building a wireless network and its countless benefits. If you want to get the full benefits of wireless networking, you should know how to secure it. If not, strangers could use your wireless network and gain access to your computer. To protect your computer, you have to use WPA encryption.

How Wireless Network Works?

A wireless network starts with the sending and receiving of data. Any information that your computer intends to share over a network is first sent to the network’s wireless adapter. This data can be anything from sending and receiving huge files to simple text instant messages from a single computer to another. The adapter translates this data into a radio signal, which it sends over an antenna. Going wireless requires you to connect an internet to a wireless router. Any computer within range with a wireless card can pull the signal from the air and access the internet. If you don’t take certain precautions, your neighbors could access information on your computer. However, if anyone uses your account, it could be tracked back to your account.

Use Encryption

Encryption jumbles the data you send over the internet into a code. Thus, it is not within reach to other users. Using encryption is the most valuable method to protect your network from unauthorized person. If you are planning to use encryption, you have two options to choose from:

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)

As advised, your router, computer and other devices must use the same encryption.

Protect Your Router and Computer

To do this, you need to use anti-spyware, anti-virus software and a firewall. As recommended, change the name of your router from the default. You also need to change your router’s pre-set password. Use passwords that are at least ten characters long. The longer the password, the stronger it is to break.

Limit Access to Your Network

Always allow a single computer to access your wireless network. Each computer that communicates with a network is assigned a unique MAC or Media Access Control address. Wireless routers often have a mechanism to allow only equipment with certain Mac address to access to the network. Like others, you also need to turn off wireless network when you are not using it. Hackers cannot access a wireless router when it is turned off. This protective method also allows you to limit the amount of time that is vulnerable to a hack.

Don’t Think that Public Wi-Fi Networks are Protected

Always be cautious about the details you access or send from a public wireless network. Most airports, hotels, cafes and other public places provide wireless networks for their customers. These places are convenient; however, not all of them are protected. Through knowing the different ways on how to secure your wireless network, you don’t have to worry on how to protect your files or computer. So, make a right move and get the utmost benefits of these wireless networks now!
