May we be the church that continues to pray and pay attention to where God is calling us to “go and tell.” Peace, Pastor Kim

5:1

Start spreading the news was the title of the email that came to me

from our Presbyterian Mission Agency. Our denomination’s Vision 2020

team is working diligently to unite and remind Presbyterians of our guiding

statement by using an acronym for PC(USA): God calls the Presbyterian

Church (U.S.A.) to be Prayerful, Courageous, United, Serving and Al ive. These are the

five qualities that the team believes will “call to action for us to pay attention to what the Spirit

is saying to us. We are all common ministers. There are those few

called specifically to that work, but every last one of us is a minis-

ter.” We believe in the priesthood of all believers—that all have di-

rect access to God and all have the potential to minister for God.

Howard Thurman writes that we “must see that no man gives all nor

takes all but rather that, by yielding and affirming, wholeness of living in community becomes

a way of life.”

Community is the way of life God has made available to us. In the body of Christ we don’t

work for victory; rather we work from victory. The good news is that victory has already been

secured—now we get to participate in the way that we and others experience God loose in

our world.

This is the seventh year for the Summer Feeding and Enrichment

program. Our church has committed over 35 weeks to caring for

the young people and their families in the Sedgefield Communi-

ty. There is nothing better in ministry than to watch children play,

do art, play music, run in the water from the fire trucks, and fill

their bellies with good food. None of this could have been done

without being prayerful, courageous, united, serving and alive. I

am unable to name all those who seven years ago had the dream

to affirm the wholeness of living in community with one another. I

am grateful for all they ways that they prayed, were courageous to

follow the Holy Spirit, and united to be alive, and serve the chil-

dren. They understood long before the acronym was identified

what it meant for wholeness living within our community.

I am excited that our denomination is calling us to remember our priesthood, our call to

ministry, and our responsibility to love our neighbor. We do it with one another and for one

another out of our love for a God who calls us “Beloved.” So brothers and sisters, I look for-

ward to paying attention to what the Holy Spirit is saying to us and where we will be seven

years from now. Sometimes we get caught up in shrinking numbers in our pews, but God

reaches further and wider each time we go outside of ourselves and are alive in the

community. May we be the church that continues to pray and pay attention to where God is

calling us to “go and tell.”

Peace, Pastor Kim

August 2019 Sedgefied Presbyteria Church Grapevie

The Nominating Committee will begin their work soon to prayerfully discern the leadership of our church.

Committee members are: Zoe Dillard, Julie Gehling, Bruce Bingham, and Diane Weeks. Ruling Elder Class of 2022 and

Nominating Committee Information will be coming out soon to begin to

collect thoughts and names to nominate for elder.

According to the Book of Order - G-2.0301 Ruling Elder Defined

As there were in Old Testament times elders for the government of the people, so the New Testament church provid-

ed persons with particular gifts to share in discernment of God’s Spirit and governance of God’s people. According-

ly, congregations should elect persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership

and being compassionate in spirit. Ruling elders are so named not because they “lord it over” the congregation

(Matt. 20:25), but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of

God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life. Ruling elders, together with teaching elders, exercise leader-

ship, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as

well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships.

Perspective Elder:

• They reflect the love of Christ in their lives.

• They have already shown their commitment by investing themselves actively and regularly in the church’s life through

worship, stewardship of talent and resources, fellowship, and service (teaching, caregiving, work with children and youth,

music ministry, outreach, committee work, etc.)

• They are able to commit to a three-year term. The Session meets monthly, at 8:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of the month,

with occasional called meetings at other times. Each elder serves on a ministry team which meets as needed. Elders will

communicate regularly to the congregation about the work of their committee through The Grapevine or “minutes for mis-

sion”; serve communion monthly and for special services during the year; extend a welcome to visitors and new mem-

bers; attend at least one meeting of Presbytery during their term.

• They will pledge to pray for the church and for God’s will.

• They are cooperative in spirit, open to new ideas, willing to learn from others, dependable.

Nominating Committee: Each year, the congregation elects a Nominating Committee to make recommendations for the upcoming class of Elders and for

other needs during the year. According to The Book of Order (G-14.0202b), nominations shall be made by a representative committee of

active members of the church, which shall include both women and men, giving fair representation to persons of all age groups and of all

racial-ethnic members and persons with disabilities who are members of that congregation. At least 2 members shall be elders designated

by the session, one of whom shall be currently on the session and serve as moderator of the committee. 1 Other members of the commit-

tee, in sufficient number to constitute a majority thereof (exclusive of the pastor), shall be chosen by the congregation or by such organiza-

tions within the church as the congregation may designate1. The pastor shall be a member of this committee, serving ex officio and with-

out vote. The nominating committee shall be chosen annually and no member of the committee shall serve more than 3 years

consecutively.”

The collection buckets are passed on the first Sunday of each month.

Other times, you can find the buckets near the pulpit; donations are accepted at any time!

Thanks to all who helped during our May Tag Sale! Continued

funds are coming in from the sale. We consigned some items that

were left over to sell at Stokesdale Marketplace and have earned

an additional $200 from that.

It’s easy to forget your pledge, especially during the summer months! Please remember the church’s bills don’t take a

vacation. Many people keep their pledges current by setting up a schedule through their bank. Check with your bank

if this is something that might interest you.

FaithAction Backpack Drive

We are partnering with FaithAction for a school supply drive this summer to help 10 underprivileged

kids. Cards noting specific items needed for each child have been placed on the Christmas tree in the

gathering area of the church. At last count, all 10 cards have been taken and three filled backpacks

have been returned. If you are buying a backpack and school supplies for one of the kids, please drop

off the filled backpack (with the card attached) under the tree by Sunday, August 4th. The deadline to

deliver the filled backpacks to FaithAction is Tuesday, August 6th. Thanks so much for all that you do to help the less fortu-

nate in our community! Please contact Michelle Harkleroad with any questions at [email protected] or

News from the Summer Lunch/Enrichment Program!

The Benevolence Ministry team is busy with our 7th Summer Lunch and

Enrichment Program at Colt’s Run Apartments. We have had great

participation this summer—both with attendees and with volunteers and

supporters. As always, our Team gives a BIG SHOUT-OUT to the peo-

ple who make this wonderful program possible. In addition to a picnic-

style lunch, there has been outside play, a special enrichment activity,

and a cold treat at the end of each day. As in previous years, we have

had activities (fire trucks, police officers, drummers, musicians, art

activities, Mad Science, Eco Bus, storytellers) and lunch scheduled for 5

weeks, (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) July 9- August 8 from

11:30 -1:30.

We have one more week until this program ends. You are welcome to

join us any of these days!

“I enjoy helping with the summer lunch program. I liked it when the firemen

came and sprayed us with the hose, and when we saw Caesar the police dog.

Helping the kids write their name on the water bottle was fun. I also helped

someone’s little brother with the bubbles and that made me feel good inside.

Teaching someone how to play tic-tac-toe was a blast!”

~Avery Harkleroad

Thank you so much to all who have continued to support our BackPack Food Program.

This Fall will kick off our 10th year providing weekend food for children at Sedgefield Elementary

School. These children would otherwise have little or nothing to eat on the weekends. There is never an

excuse for a child to go hungry, and we're so very grateful for your contributions! We will begin packing Back-

Packs the first week of September on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m.. Each week, we will also try to include addi-

tional food items in the bags that go home with the children. These items can include an apple or orange,

pudding cups, Jello cups, individualized boxes of raisins, goldfish packs, fruit snacks, or pretzel packs. Any individually wrapped

items (without peanuts or peanut butter) can be added. All food donations can be brought to the church office at any time or left

in the foyer in the large basket labeled "Backpacks". If you'd like more information on our BackPack Program, please feel free to

stop by any Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. and we will be happy to show you around, or contact Karen Furman at 336-294-

6403 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Thank you again to everyone who has supported this program over the

years through volunteer time, food donations, and financial support. We couldn't do it without you! ~Karen Furman

A special thanks to everyone who worked

on the Tag Sale. It was amazing! They pulled

everything together, priced it, sold it, and then

cleaned up! Many thanks! It was great—lots of

great items, fantastic prices. I’m already saving

stuff for next year.

Many, many thanks!

"I had so much fun at Camp Massanetta. I made

new friends and became a lot closer to God. We played fun

games and learned about God through singing, dancing, having

discussions, and praying. The main theme of the camp was that

if you keep praying and being persistent, then God will answer

your prayers. I wish I could go back next year, but I will go to

Montreat instead. I know Montreat will be just as much fun!"

Facilitated by: Marilyn Wolf, M.Ed

Dates: Oct 27, Nov 3, Nov 17 from 3pm-5pm

This is open to the public- please bring a friend.

What is the Enneagram?

The ancient symbol of the Enneagram has become

one of today's most popular systems for self-

understanding, based on nine distinct personality

types. Now, two of the world's foremost Enneagram

authorities introduce a powerful new way to use the

Enneagram as a tool for personal transformation and

development. Whatever your spiritual background, the

Enneagram shows how you can overcome your inner

barriers, realize your unique gifts and strengths, and

discover your deepest direction in life.

Go ahead and get your book!

Information about Marilyn Wolf,

M.Ed.:

Marilyn is the founder and director

of The School at Space for Con-

scious Living. Her transformative

experiences since 2009 led her to

retire as a psychotherapist after 28 years in order to

help others in their spiritual journeys. She is an

integrative energy work practitioner, a seasoned

Enneagram teacher, and is certified by the Servant

Leadership School of Greensboro where she also

taught for five years. She is gifted for gathering peo-

ple into community for shared exploration, learning,
