However, the CCSS is bringing a new emphasis on reading for

information: 55% nonfiction, 45% literary. The current library collection is geared heavily towardfiction and thus developing and promoting a readablenonfiction collection which is relevant and current is a goalof the library, while still maintaining the best fiction

Destiny Conversion: a much needed and long overdue conversion

to a web-based catalog and circulation system that fully integratesall of our digital resources to place this past spring.

Weeding: We completed several weeding projects throughout theschool year because our collection is bloated with old titles andtitles that need updating. Now that we have a book recyclingprogram, I can weed more heavily than previously when discardingthe books was an obstacle. Weeded Sections: 500, 600, biography, fiction

Work room organization: After a long history of author visits, the

library had accumulated multiple copies of many novels. The librarymaintains a collection of booktalk novels in the work room, butafter six years had many copies of books that were not being used. After working with and English teacher who was reorganizing theEnglish book closet, Tina Gosselin, the library T.A. removed thebooks from our catalog and followed his instructions to packagemultiple copies into carefully labeled individual boxes to be movedto the English closet for use by the English department.

In an ongoing effort to address curricular demands for nonfictionand rigor, the library:

Promoted free teacher subscriptions to the e-Courant andprovided a subscription to the digital edition of theNew YorkTimes. (Based on collaboration with Rona Berkowitz)

Created and posted two book lists usingDestiny: current high-interest and relevant nonfiction and fiction titles in the librarythat match the expected Lexile levels for grade 6-8

Collaborated with the 6th grade language arts teachers to findnew novels for the curriculum.(Shared Doc)

Promoted theICONNdatabases for finding and using nonfiction

    materials

    GUARANTEED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

I collaborated with teachers and worked with classes oninformation literacy or provided booktalks 846 periods of the year.(Library Calendar)The emphasis on instruction definitely impacts

my ability to provide traditional library support, such as readersadvisory and reading initiatives, but it provides students withcrucial 21st Century skills.

The library media program has a board-approved K-12 InformationLiteracy Curriculum. At Sedgwick, I focus on the6-8 PriorityStandardswhich are taught by collaborating with social studies andreading teachers through a Guaranteed Research Experience.

    Topics for GRE 2011-2012

6th Change the World / Human Environment Interaction

    7th Contributions of Ancient Civilizations

8th How does the Constitution establish and maintain aculture of liberty?

One shift by the social studies department this past year was awayfrom performance assessment tasks to a classic research papermodel focused on astudent-developed thesis statement. Thisprocess is similar to the Quest model of student inquiry andprovided many challenges in scheduling enough time in thelibrary/computer labs.

Also new this year, the 8th graders were taught how to useWikiProjects(sign-in: parent parent) where each student had his orher own wiki. This was a successful way for students to organizeresearch and gave them access at home and at school.

Other research projects conducted in the library:

History: Revolutionary Biographies presented with Glogster

Science: Current Events, Marine Biomes, and Elements

Reading students in grades 6, 7, and 8, as well as AIMS come inmonthly for scheduled booktalks. I plan to set aside all Fridays in2012-2013 for booktalks so that I can get more teams and classesinvolved.

Additional booktalks were delivered to Special Ed, ESOL, 6th GradeLanguage Art, 7th Grade English throughout the year.

    Orientation:

The month of September is student orientation month. I provide

    all 6th

grade students with their network usernames andpasswords, which takes a full day. Additionally, I collaborate

with teachers to familiarize them with many of the tools

    available to them through WHPS.

I also provide a lab time to work with 7th graders on whatever

their teachers feel is a priority for orientation.

This coming year the emphasis will be on student Gmail logins

    and Google Apps.

    Book Trailers

I had the unexpected pleasure of working with a 6th grade

team for a week in my lab to produce book trailers with

Photostory. The students did an awesome job and I hope that I

can make it work into the schedule again this coming year. I

wish I had more time for these creative skills projects.

Nutmeg Childrens Book Award:Each year Sedgwick students

are encouraged to read the Nutmeg Intermediate and Teen

Book Award nominees and vote for the title of their choice. I

offer booktalks and lists and promote these titles all year long.

Scholastic Book Fairs: The Sedgwick library hosts two Scholastic

book fairs each year, a for-profit in the fall, and a not-for-profit

Buy One Get One Free sale in the spring. PTO volunteers staff

    the fair during the day.

Student Interns: We have developed a student interns

program, specifically to be able to have students perform

book check-out when my TA is subbing and I am teaching.

With our previous circulation system, it was fairlystraightforward. With our new system we will have to revise our

    practices.

Parent Volunteers: The library is also lucky to utilize some

parent volunteers. The biggest task for volunteers is reshelving

books. In addition, we have a few regulars who also do special

projects such as bulletin boards and inventory. The PTO always

staffs the book fairs with parent volunteers.

Google Winter CSI: I taught a three-session winter CSI for Sedgwicstaff to work on Google Apps for Education Skills. We spent timeusing the features of Docs, Forms, and Gmail to help elevateeveryones comfort with the new platform.

Google CSI (1/25) We realized that more time was needed so acommittee of Google Ninjas (Jas Singh, Jeff Sousa, Denise Jaffe,Chris Jud, Pam Matway, and I) created a Google all-schoolbootcamp based on staff comfort with Google Apps. Based on aGoogle Survey, staff was grouped together by proficiency andcomfort. Four concurrent sessions were offered around thebuilding. It was one of the most positive professional developmentdays of the year, except that one lab was down.

CASL: I also co-presented a session at the state ConnecticutAssociation of School Librarians conference entitled: Google Formsin the Library (with my KP counterpart Denise deMello).

    In-School Support:

Google Ninja I am a Google Ninja

Edublogs in house support: I am the building Edublogs trainer

SharpSchool I have also received training and have access toSharpSchool (though C. Lukas is the true building trainer). I provideadditional support.

Sedgwicks One Book Community Experience 2012-2013

With the help of a committee of teachers, administrators, and

parents, we are going to bring this book to all of Sedgwick next year.

Destiny Logins: All students and staff will be provided with logins for

Destiny. With this new login, they can create lists, check on their

accounts, put books on hold, and more, all from any computer with access to the Internet.

Google Apps for students: The district is rolling out Google Accounts for students. I will have amain leadership role for its implementation; however I plan to ask teams to also have a personon team to handle basic questions and training for students and staff. Since I teach so much, itis important that other people are cross-trained in Google Classroom.

Plan for laptop lab: With the help of Joe Foley, the library has procured new tables and hasbeen approved for new power sources on the tables-side of the library in order to provideaccess to more computers for students. At this moment, we are planning to utilize existinglaptops to be used by classes brought to the library by their teacher or with me. In the future, I

see this technology bar as an area where students can charge up and work with their BYOD!

Summer reading: The WHPS and Sedgwick summer reading programs need immediate revision.I believe a committee will be gathered next year at both the district and school level to addresssummer reading.

Reference: Major moving and weeding will be transforming our Reference section next year. Most of the titles will be discarded (aged) or moved to our nonfiction shelves in order toreimagine the library computer lab space.

(Genre shelving): This is in parenthesis because it is just a germon an idea. Right now, we use a few display boxes to group booksby genre. I am considering rearranging our entire fiction collectionto a genre system. For example, right now fiction is organizedby authors last name. In the future I would like to have booksorganized by type: mystery, adventure, relationship, etc.
