The parking lot was packed like pods upon ar-rival to CASS for this year’s Seedy Saturday event. As the name implies, there is a lot of seed selling and trading of local, sometimes heritage seeds, but the event really is so much more.

They make use of the lecture hall at CASS with 4 differ-ent speakers giving presentations featuring Ron Lewis of Naughton, Jessica Laidley of R.A.I.N., Lauren Bell of In-vasive Species Centre and Glenn Lawrence of Lawrence’s Springwater Farm, each tackling a different topic.

You had the opportunity to pick up many locally produced items such as maple syrup, honey, alpaca products and much more. Besides products, there was an oppor-tunity to ask experts about their passions, which will not only help you this year, but in the years to come. In total over 20 groups and companies had booths at this year’s Seedy Saturday.

For those who brought their kids, or who just liked to get scared, Entomica was on hand with various insect displays of some very large creepy crawlies we are happy to say come from across the world and you won’t find them in your garden this year. What hopefully are in your garden are earthworms. Clean North demonstrated composting with worms and received some “child labour,” as kids got the oppor-tunity to sort through compost and see how the worms work. Even adults got into it and were able to solicit free advice on composting.

It was also a great opportunity to tour the CASS greenhouse. They had several plants for sale, and some interesting hydroponics features to look at. If you brought home a shamrock, be warned they get massive – the ones we got last year are at least 20x bigger this year and we’ve had to repot it many times already.

While many took in the day just to either purchase items and speak with others there was also the important message of food insecurity which af-fects many in Algoma. MPP Michael Mantha was on hand not only to take in the event but to present a plaque to the North Channel Poverty Network for the

While not overly serious about seeding ourselves, we will offer this one piece of advice for those overzealous who did not catch Glenn’s talk about seeding: Don’t start your seeds too early. Spring may be just around the corner but it’s likely a bigger corner than you want.

The Wild Game Dinner of 2018 was a wonderful success. The Club is very appreciative of the volunteers who worked preparing, serving and clearing the dinner, the Chefs, Max and Yves who created the many very special dishes, the bakers who provided all the desserts, the Shamrock Club for doing the dishes, and all the donors of auction items. The Club also extends its thanks to the Legion Branch 374 for providing the venue. All funds go to supporting the Hunter and Anglers programs like the Ernest Eddy Memorial Children’s Fish Derby, the Awesome Women’s Experience, annual data gathering of the deer harvest, and public education events, and for support of our outdoor sports’ heritage through education and partnerships with local and regional organisations. Snow Bunting

Snow buntings are medium sized passerine arctic birds that spend the breeding season in the far north tundra. They are the first migrating species to arrive back north in the summer. The males will arrive in the arctic in April, when temperatures are still around -30 C. The females will arrive weeks later as the snow starts to melt. They are monog-amous and when nesting, in the cracks of rocks, because of the cold temperatures of the tundra the female must remain incubating the eggs at all times while the male brings her food.

Snow buntings migrate south for the winter at the end of September, sometimes as far south as Texas. They can be found in the winters in grassy fields along lakes and oceans, which makes the Huron Line a pretty good birding spot for these birds in the winter (we’ve noticed they love to be flying about during snowstorms). The females will leave the arctic first, then the males and juveniles. They are the only passerines other than common ravens that can winter as far north as they do.

Male snow buntings are white and black while the females have the same wing patterns but have a brown back. In the winter, both males and females don a reddish brown colour plumage and they fit in perfectly with their surroundings, making them somewhat hard to spot, and even when they fly they tend to look like a snowstorm. Snow buntings do not go through a molt in the spring like other passerine birds, they molt in the late summer and the males’ white and black plumage turns brown, similar to the females. In the spring the males will rub their feathers on the snow to rub off the brown colours to reveal their summer black and white plumage.

Recipe Corner Zucchini Brownies

INGREDIENTS:

FOR THE BROWNIES:2 cups all-purpose flour1/2 cup cocoa powder1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda1 teaspoon salt1/2 cup vegetable oil1 1/2 cups sugar2 teaspoons vanilla extract2 cups shredded zucchini (1 large or 2 small zucchinis)3-5 tablespoons water

FOR THE FROSTING:3 tablespoons cocoa powder1/4 cup butter, melted2 cups powdered sugar1/4 cup milk1 tablespoon vanilla extractPinch of salt

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9×13″ baking pan with foil and spray with cooking spray. Set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

3. Using an electric mixer fitted with a pad-dle attachment, mix together the oil, sugar, and vanilla until well combined. Add the dry ingredients and stir. Fold in the zucchini. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes so the bat-ter can absorb the moisture from the zucchi-ni. Then, if your mixture is still very powdery, add up to 5 tablespoons water (start with 1 tablespoon and work up from there, stirring well after each addition). The batter will be very thick but shouldn’t be powdery. Do not add too much water! Spread in prepared pan.

4. Bake 25-30 minutes until the brownies spring back when gently touched.

Frosting: Whisk butter, cocoa, salt, and powdered sugar. Whisk in milk and vanil-la. Spread over cooled brownies. Cut into squares and chill to semi-set.

The 49th Annual Maple Syrup Festival Continues This Weekend!

THIS COMING WEEKEND, April 9 and 10, the Royal Cana-dian Legion Branch 374 on St. Joseph Island will again behosting the 49th Annual Maple Syrup Festival in RichardsLanding.

Every year, the festival serves thousands of “all you can eat”pancakes and sausages topped with sticky and sweet St.Joseph Island maple syrup to residents from Wawa to Sud-bury and everywhere in between. This treat is available forjust $9/adult, $8/senior, and $5/child under 12. The 2016 fes-tival includes many of the usual features including localMaple Syrup Producer booths with a variety of syrups, can-dies and sugars. Craft vendors and local organization infor-mation tables are favourites with the regular patrons. Theyearly $1000 prize raffle tickets will also be for sale.

This year, the festival is privileged to include a few specialguests: Central Algoma Secondary School’s History Club, the49th Field Regiment, RCA and Sault Ste. Marie & AlgomaDistrict CUPE Council. A Judge Tells It Like It Is

Two years ago, New Zealand high school principal John Tapene had become frustrated with “moans and groans” from some students complaining of ‘being bored’. He wrote a reply to this attitude in his newsletter, in which he quotes Judge Phillip B. Gilliam of Denver, Colorado who, on De-cember 17, 1959 offered some stern, possibly insensitive but certainly well-meant advice of his own to a young offender who had pleaded boredom as the cause of his bad behaviour.

He said: “Always we hear the cry from teenagers, “What can we do? Where can we go? My answer is this: Go home! Mow the lawn! Wash the windows. Learn to cook, build a raft, get a job, visit the sick, study your lessons and after you’re fin-ished, read a book! Your town does not owe you recreational facilities and your parents do not owe you fun.”

“The world does not owe you a living; you owe the world something. You owe it your time, energy and talent so that no one will be at war, in sickness or lonely again. In other words, grow up, stop being a cry baby, get out of your dream world and develop a backbone, not a wishbone.”

“Start behaving like a responsible person. You are important and you are needed. It’s too late to sit around and wait for someone to do something some day. Some day is now, and that someone is you!”

Since then, Mr. Tapene has become quite an international celebrity. A Judge Tells It Like It Is

Two years ago, New Zealand high school principal John Tapene had become frustrated with “moans and groans” from some students complaining of ‘being bored’. He wrote a reply to this attitude in his newsletter, in which he quotes Judge Phillip B. Gilliam of Denver, Colorado who, on De-cember 17, 1959 offered some stern, possibly insensitive but certainly well-meant advice of his own to a young offender who had pleaded boredom as the cause of his bad behaviour.

He said: “Always we hear the cry from teenagers, “What can we do? Where can we go? My answer is this: Go home! Mow the lawn! Wash the windows. Learn to cook, build a raft, get a job, visit the sick, study your lessons and after you’re fin-ished, read a book! Your town does not owe you recreational facilities and your parents do not owe you fun.”

“The world does not owe you a living; you owe the world something. You owe it your time, energy and talent so that no one will be at war, in sickness or lonely again. In other words, grow up, stop being a cry baby, get out of your dream world and develop a backbone, not a wishbone.”

“Start behaving like a responsible person. You are important and you are needed. It’s too late to sit around and wait for someone to do something some day. Some day is now, and that someone is you!”

The Marina Manager is responsible for the daily operation of the Richards Landing Municipal Marina in accordance with municipal policies, and Provincial and TSSA regulations. Responsibilities include training, scheduling and supervising staff; cash management and reconciliation; ordering fuel and supplies; maintaining health and safety standards; and the provision of excellent customer service.
