2007 Renewable Energy Education ProgramSEI’s Renewable Energy Education Program teaches the practical use of solar,

wind, and water power. Our workshops give individuals the knowledge and skillsto design, install, and maintain renewable energy systems, and to build state-of-

the-art solar homes that are efficient, practical, and earth-friendly.

The Need for RE EducationA sustainable future requires investment ofknowledge and skills in the people who will shapethat future. The renewable energies of sun, wind, and water are clean and abundant, yetunderutilized resources. Renewable energytechnologies are mature, and more people need tobe skilled in their use.

SEI provides information, education, and trainingto people who want to shape a sustainable future.Decision-makers need information to makeappropriate choices with confidence. Techniciansneed skills and experience to service thetechnologies. End-users must learn how tooperate and maintain self-reliant renewable energysystems.

Educational PhilosophySEI believes that people learn by doing.Instructors are leaders in their fields, bringing themost up-to-date information in renewable energytechnologies. Classroom and laboratory work isenhanced by case studies, tours, and practicalhands-on field work.

Workshop AtmosphereClass size is limited to an appropriate student-teacher ratio. We work hard and ask that you dothe same. SEI stresses safety and consideration.People from different cultures attend ourworkshops, and we expect that all participantstreat people of different backgrounds and abilitieswith respect. Our workshops are in English perose habla español.

Workshop MaterialsThe tuition fee for the workshop includes allcourse materials. You will receive a workshopnotebook, and in some cases an additionaltextbook, upon your arrival.

EnrollmentWorkshops are open to all on a first-come basis.Workshop size is limited. To reserve a space, sendyour entire tuition. Please check the website orcall before you register to make sure there isspace available. Workshops are subject tocancellation due to low enrollment.

Solar Electric Workshops

This has been our most popular workshop for thoseseeking employment in the growing solar industry.Participants will gain technical skills and a strongfoundation of how to design and safely install solar-electric systems. Participants learn system sizing, siteanalysis, hardware specification, and componentselection of both stand-alone and grid-tied systems. Thisworkshop starts out with the very basics of photovoltaics(PV), and incrementally accelerates students to safelyinstall a code compliant solar-electric system.

Each workshop will offer a hands-on component.

SEI’s PV Design & Installation Manual is included inthe price of the tuition.

Women’s Program

This PV Design and Installation workshop is gearedspecifically towards women and taught by women. Participantslearn how to use PV (photovoltaic) technology to produce theirown electricity from the sun through practical design andinstallation of PV systems. Participants learn system sizing, site analysis, hardware specification and component selection. The workshop covers typical applications and case studyexamples. Install an operational system in the field and learnthe proper use of tools and safety precautions. This workshopis for women wanting to use PV and for those seekingemployment in the growing solar industry.

Is this workshop easier than the coed workshop? No. It covers all the same material as the coed workshop. Participants have included licensed

electricians, engineers, teachers, students and homemakers.

PV Certification:The Women’s PV Design & Installationworkshop is accredited by the Instituteof Sustainable Power and helps fulfillone of the requirements for nationalphotovoltaic certification. By receivinga 'Certificate of Completion' in thisworkshop you qualify to take theNABCEP PV entry level "Certificate ofKnowledge" exam. Seewww.nabcep.org for more information.

Why Women Only? Our women’s workshops are intended toprovide women with a supportive learningatmosphere. Many women have little orno hands-on electrical experience, andmay be wary of attending a coed coursewith men who have grown up usingpower tools. Even women with hands-onexperience already working in technical fields find it helpful and rewarding networking with otherwomen interested in and/or working in renewable energy.

INVEST

SEI created Solar In the Schools (SIS) in April 2002 to developa comprehensive curriculum for grades K-12 that meetsColorado’s established standards for science. Since itsinception, over 2,000 students and teachers from the local andregional school districts have participated in the program. Theprimary strategy of SIS is to present a model renewable energyeducation curriculum tailored for youth including classdiscussions, interactive and hands-on activities on renewableenergy, and scientific experimentation that fosters criticalthinking. SEI believes it is crucial to both promote sustainabilityand provide a curriculum that will become a permanent part ofthe basic science curriculum long after SEI has left theclassroom. We also just love to inspire kids to participate infinding solutions to our current energy needs – renewable energy education does just that!

SEI offers alumni an opportunity to participate in INVEST,International Volunteers in Environmentally SustainableTechnologies. SEI alumni can apply to volunteer overseas withone of our partner organizations to help bring renewable energytechnologies to communities in the developing world. Volunteersinstall PV systems on rural health centers, teach rural farmersabout solar water pumping, install micro-hydro and wind systemsto power rural communities, or help build sustainable houses. Allthis while meeting new people and learning new cultures. In 2006INVEST volunteers went to Thailand and Nicaragua.

SEI Eco-Campus

We are moving to an intensive lab-basedworkshop format and will be teaching over 70hands-on and online workshops in 2007. SEI isprimed to educate nearly 1,800 peopleworldwide this year. To meet this demand, we atSEI have increased our staff, are developingnew and improved curriculum, and haveprocured a 7-acre parcel of land in Paonia,Colorado.

SEI’s main office is located in Carbondale,Colorado. However, we have had a smallpresence in Paonia for just over three years.

In 2005 we purchased a beautiful 7-acre parcelof land in Paonia. This purchase will be thecatalyst for a multi-stage project to create therenewable energy ‘Eco-Campus’ we haveenvisioned for over a decade. While the ‘finalproduct’ may be some years away, we havecurrently relocated our Paonia office to thisproperty and have already hosted many of SEIs‘hands-on’ workshops in Paonia. FromPhotovoltaics to Wind Power to Natural Buildingworkshops we are ready to take ‘Hands-on’ to awhole new level.

The time has come to expand as an organization to meet the exploding demand

of those seeking training in a rapidly growing renewable energy industry.

In our new PV Lab Yard, our students do not justinstall the array or wire the battery bank, but workon all aspects of our lab systems. Small studentgroups rotate from component to component withinthe balance of system and tear-down, dissect, andre-install lab-based systems. From detailed solarsite analysis to conduit sizing, our students do it all.Currently, three diverse PV systems challenge andoccupy students with the latest ‘cutting edge’equipment.

In further stages of this initiative we will be addingadditional systems. In Phase II, we will be adding5 more PV systems (another grid-tied system, awater pumping system, a developing world system,a security/parking lighting system, and a portablepower system) as well as a micro-hydro systemand wind power system. Phase III of this initiativewill encompass larger scale PV and Wind systemsto provide energy for new buildings. Thecombination of these specific lab systems willprovide a balanced and intensive experience thatwill prepare our students for ‘real world,’ codecompliant design and installation of renewableenergy systems.
