Jim Bailey, son of South African mining magnate Abe Bailey, was the publisher of DRUM magazine. His wife of fifty-one years recalls their life together, mixing with artists, authors, musicians and politicians.

Benson was born in South Africa, and after serving with the South African forces in North Africa, she travelled and worked in the United States. In 1951 she worked for Tshekedi Khama and then helped set up the Africa Bureau in London, where she came to know a large number of anti-apartheid figures. She was put under house arrest upon her return to South Africa and later went into exile. She wrote biographies of Tshekedi Khama and Albert Luthuli amongst other works.

Forbes, a South African, played on the professional tennis circuit. A very readable account of his life, filled with humorous stories, from helping Sol Kerzner choose a private jet and witnessing a John McEnroe tantrum, to playing serious tennis with Cliff Drysdale (his brother-in-law), Abe Segal and others. According to the invitation, the book was launched in Johannesburg during Wimbledon, and guests were invited to dress as if for Wimbledon "on a cool day". Strawberries and cream were served!

This was Oberholzer's first book. His photographs showed the veld, vlaktes and people of southern Africa in a new and dramatic way. His work is now widely recognised, and copies of his early books are hard to find.

Podbrey, a Lithuanian, tells of her youth in Durban before and during WWII. Against her parents' wishes, she married her first husband, H.A. Naidoo, a committed South African Communist Party member. Together they spent several years in Budapest, where they became disillusioned when they observed the inequalities within the Communist system.

In 1988 Sachs lost his right arm and the sight in his left eye in a car-bomb attack in Maputo. He was jailed for his anti-apartheid activities, and wrote movingly about his experiences in a previous book, THE JAIL DIARY OF ALBIE SACHS. In this FREE DIARY… he and his partner, September, return to London, St Petersburg and Helsinki, places where he had lived whilst in exile. They reconnected with those who had sustained them whilst they were there previously.

Welensky (1907-1991) was the second and final Prime Minister of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland from 1957. He opposed British moves to African majority rule. A fervent admirer of Britain and the Empire, he described himself as "half Jewish, half Afrikaner and 100% British".

This collection focuses on the work of an engineer, Mr G.L. Lankester (1888-1976),

who was employed by African Explosives in Somerset West and then Modderfontein, before transferring to Cape Town to work on the new harbour constructed on the Foreshore. He collected material related to the development of the harbour in general and thus provides an interesting view of the area, vital to Cape Town’s financial success and growth in those days; and now viewed as some of the most expensive real estate in Africa. Many of the piers and buildings in the photographs are easily recognizable today. A marvellous archival resource.

Whilst on leave from India in 1832-3, D'Oyly lived in Cape Town. A fine draughtsman, he painted from life and in the field. He loved the landscape and had an observant eye for people and their daily activities. He left an album of 118 sketches of the Cape Peninsula and environs. His landscapes record the countryside of the Boland and his sketches of people form an interesting social record of the time.

Major Raven-Hart was born in Ireland and after studying, worked in South America before serving in WWI. During WWII he served on Mountbatten's staff. He lived in Sri Lanka and South Africa after the war. He wrote a number of books on canoeing; including accounts of his trips on the large European rivers (1935); on the Mississippi (1936) and the Nile (1936), and in Ireland (1938). The 153 accounts that appear in this work date from 1488 (Dias) to1649 (Tavernier) and Raven-Hart only translated or included accounts directly related to the Cape. He provides a fascinating insight into the physical environment and into the people living in and around the Cape at this time.

Professor Axelson (1913-1998) was educated at the Universities of Natal and the Witwatersrand. He devoted a great part of his life to understanding the Portuguese travels in and around Africa, the first South African to do so, as the focus of research up until then had been on British and Dutch endeveaours. Not only was he the foremost scholar on Portuguese penetration of Africa, but he also doubled as an archeaologist, discovering three Padraos erected by the Portuguese, one in Namibia, one in South Africa and the last in Kenya.

During his travels he was a wonderful diarist, recording his thoughts and views on all that he witnessed, ensuring that his account has become a classic of Africana. Albert Luthuli (1898-1967) led the African National Congress for 15 years, during the period of the Defiance Campaign; the drafting of the Freedom Charter in 1957. Although finally acquitted in the five-year Treason Trial, he was banned and confined to the Lower Tugela magisterial district. He was awarded the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his peaceful resistance and leadership in the face of growing repression under apartheid.

On 21 March 1960, Sobukwe (1924-1978), founder of the Pan-Africanist Congress, led a non-violent demonstration in defiance of the pass laws which turned to tragedy when the police opened fire at Sharpeville, killing 68 protesters. He was jailed for incitement for three years and then kept in near solitary confinement on Robben Island for six years. He was released into house arrest in Kimberley, where he died in 1978.

As an officer of the 1st Battalion of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot, Lieutenant Lloyd (1856-1897) saw active service in the Anglo-Zulu War. As a talented artist, he became the official artist for the P & O and Union lines on his return to civilian life. His watercolour sketches and paintings of the Anglo-Zulu War remained unknown for almost a century, kept in an attic as he had bound them, by the family who inherited them. Copies were taken to Fugitive's Drift in 2000 and shown to David Rattray, who undertook to write Lloyd's story and that of the War, illustrated by the paintings.

He returned from exile in 1990 and took part in the constitutional negotiations and was the first Minister of Housing in the Government of National Unity until his death in 1995.

He was imprisoned on Robben Island for twelve years before beign paroled, but when he returned home and tried to resettle on his land, he was rebanished to Robben Island where he died in mysterious circumstances.

Now he is regarded as a pop icon, and his paintings have been sold for high amounts at auctions since his death.

Mansfield's ambition was to be the first woman to travel from the Cape to Cairo in a single journey. She intended to serve as an example of what Englishwomen could achieve in Africa and to encourage emigration there. Travelling by train and hammock with a retinue of 49 bearers, she got as far as Lake Tanganyika before having to divert to Mozambique after her porters refused to go on in the face of an epidemic of sleeping sickness.

Adamson (1906-1989) joined the Kenya Game Department and became Senior Game Warden of the Northern Frontier District. In 1944 he married Friederike Victoria Gessner (1910-1980), who later became better known as Joy Adamson. Joy's books, including BORN FREE, became bestsellers and the film based on that book made her a household name around the world. Adamson spent all his life in the wilds and was murdered whilst assisting a tourist who had been attacked by poachers.

Milner was High Commissioner at the Cape in the years preceding the South African War. He was, arguably, the person with the most power in Southern Africa at that time.

The Battle of Spioen Kop and the Relief of Ladysmith are covered as well as the British advance through the Free State and the Transvaal. Churchill returned to England as a hero; and his political career began!
