The development combined a range of uses including industrial, commercial, leisure, residential and conservation uses, in a joint venture with English Partnerships/Yorkshire Forward.

The mixed use scheme includes a Factory Outlet Retail Centre and an Indoor Ski and Cinema Complex.

£1.5 million of hard and soft landscape proposals have been designed and implemented on the retail village. The leisure complex includes focal plaza areas with strong avenues of semi mature trees. Innovative lighting, site furniture, public art and water features extend throughout the developments.

A community woodland and extensive areas of heathland, grassland and wetland have been successfully created on the 72 hectare tip site and a new rail halt and footbridge provides direct access to the scheme.

The site will soon provide the new stadium for Castleford Tigers Rugby Club.

Monk Bridge, Leeds

FPCR worked collaboratively with other disciplines to deliver a range of innovative ecological enhancements, with biodiversity considerations incorporated within the design of green space. The former Doncaster Monk bridge site is characterised by a Grade II-listed 20 span former Victorian railway viaduct which forms a bridge across the site and links the site with the adjacent Leeds-Liverpool Canal and River Aire. Plans focussed on the creation of a new public park, inspired by New York’s famous ‘Highline’, creating a distinctive bridge top green space.

A key ecological aspect of the scheme was ensuring this space also functioned as a wildlife corridor creating habitat linkage between the canal in the east and the railway to the west of the site. Given the heritage value of the site and its unsuitability for conventional replacement roosts within the spans, FPCR developed a bespoke bat mitigation scheme incorporating specially designed bat boxes. Along with appropriate lighting strategies, this helped ensure the scheme received unanimous approval from Leeds planning committee, with the chair stating “it was the most exciting scheme he had seen in 30 years.”

FPCR were appointed to provide ecological support for a 1.8 hectare high profile 607 unit residential and leisure-led regeneration scheme in central Leeds, with new greenspace being central to the design of the scheme.

River survey

Stamford Bridge, East Riding

The 6.5ha scheme included 120 new homes and associated green infrastructure and services.

FPCR contributed ecology and arboriculture support and also coordinated the production of the supporting Environmental Statement which contributed towards the success of the application.

Following an initial phase 1 habitat survey, ecological support included detailed surveys for badger, bats, great crested newt, reptiles, otter and invasive species. The results of these surveys were included within an Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA). In addition, due to the proximity of the application to the River Derwent European protected site, a Habitat Regulations Screening Assessment (HRA) was also produced.

FPCR were commissioned to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to an outline planning application at a site in Stamford Bridge.
