Selecting the Right Diamond Blades – What To Look For?

With so many materials out there to cut and with a number of saw machines available, how do you know what diamond tools are best for you? Diamond blades are of various types, but broadly they can be classified as general purpose or specific application blades. General purpose blades are less expensive than the others, but the life of such blades is far less than application specific blades. Before you begin, you must decide what is more significant for you – The price of the diamond blade or the cost per cut? If you have an occasional use of the blade, then it is suggested to go for a low priced blade that would be most cost effective.

There are few factors that determine the selection of diamond tools: Material Type - The first thing that is required to know is the exact usage for which the saw blades are being used for. There are different varieties of diamond saw blades which are very frequently used for cutting various types of hard, medium and soft surfaces. The type of surface to be worked on, decides the type of blade needed. Hard Materials include Granite, Field Stone, Paving Brick, Refractory Brick, and Concrete with Aggregate like Chert, Flint and Quartz. Concrete with Aggregate like Limestone, Dolomite, Marble or Sandstone constitutes the Medium Materials and Soft Materials comprise Asphalt, Green Concrete and Block.

Wet cutting or dry cutting – Wet cutting improves cutting efficiency, reduces dust and enhances the life of a diamond blade. But areas where wet cutting cannot be done, dry cutting is done. Dry cutting requires diamond blade to be sharper, laser welded and specifically designed for this purpose. All blades cannot be used for dry cutting as this can be dangerous as well as inefficient. Thus, one should select blade according to the cutting need. Diameter of the blade - This is a very common, but an important factor to give consideration. While selecting a diamond blade for your saw machine, ensure that the arbor hole matches perfectly with the saw machine being used for cutting.

Horsepower of saw machine – Another factor that rules the selection of a blade for your saw machine is the horse power of your saw machine. The diamond blade might deliver a short service life or get consumed faster, if placed in a high powered machine that exerts bigger force on the blade than its capability. The design of a blade used in high power machine is different from the one used in low powered machine. Cost and performance- Single application blades are usually more expensive than general use blades. But, do not focus too much on the upfront cost. Why? Application specific blades will have a longer life and will cut faster and more efficiently for the specific material than general use blades. Hence, a single purpose blade is usually cheaper in the long run.
