Senate Year End Report – 2011/12 - 3 -
A WORD FROM THE CHAIR
The 2011-2012 academic year was a year of many accomplishments and challenges at VIU. VIU
continues to cultivate our growing reputation as a centre of excellence for teaching and learning,
research, and service.
This past year we continued to work on fully completing VIU’s governance transition and achieving
the bicameral governance structure as contained in the University Act. Significant progress has been
made since VIU’s change to university status in September of 2008. The hard work and dedication of
all those involved across the institution is the major reason for the achievements to date. This past
year Senate approved all of the Faculty Bylaws which have been in the development stage for the
last 2 years. Faculty and Faculty Councils have started to meet and integrate themselves within the
academic governance structure. This is an important accomplishment, and requirement as per the
University Act.
In the coming year Senate and Senate committees will continue to be involved with the Academic
Plan action items and working towards recommendations as identified in the plan.
Senators and Senate Standing Committee members have worked diligently over the past year to
address important institutional issues. Their work has been instrumental in meeting the academic
responsibilities of the institution. Thank you to all Senators, contributors to Senate, and institutional
members who have shown their commitment and dedication to Vancouver Island University through
active engagement in University governance through Faculty/Faculty Councils, Senate Standing
Committees, and the Senate.
