Summit Presenters

Dr. Tamarah Pfeiffer, Associate Deputy Director - Navajo Schools Bureau of Indian Education, U.S. Department of the Interior

Dr. Tamarah Pfei�er is the Associate Deputy Director overseeing 65 BIE-funded schools on the Navajo Nation Reservation. Dr. Pfei�er is a member of the Navajo Nation and has served since 2010 as Superintendent of the Alamo Navajo Community

School, a BIE-funded, tribally controlled K-12 day school in Magdalena, New Mexico on the Navajo Nation Reservation.

Dr. Pfei�er’s career as an educator encompasses more than 35 years as a teacher and administrator in public, grant, and contract schools. In addition, Dr. Pfei�er has been the recipient of numerous awards for her educational leadership and academic research, including Principal of the Year for Rough Rock Community School, Newberry Scholar Fellow, Who’s Who Among American Teachers and Youth Development Inc. Teacher of the Year. Dr. Pfei�er holds a Bachelors of Arts in Education from the University of New Mexico (1990), a Masters of Arts in English from the Bread Loaf School of English (1999), and a Doctorate of Education with a specialization in Educational Administration and American Indians from the Pennsylvania State University (2006).

Ryan J. Smith, Executive Director The Education Trust—West

Ryan J. Smith is the Executive Director of The Education Trust—West. Since taking the helm of Ed Trust—West, Ryan led the team’s development and production of 2015’s Black Minds Matter: Supporting the Educational Success of Black Children in

California, a report championed by the California Legislative Black Caucus, and leveraged by state and local education leaders, students, and other advocates. Ryan also guides the organization’s stra-tegic work to better serve communities �ghting for change at the local level, leading to Ed Trust—West’s launch of the inaugural Community Data and Research Hub in Southern California.

Ryan holds a B.A. in Political Science from UCLA. He has authored more than a dozen editorials and opinion pieces published in the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Sacramento Bee, Education Week, US News and World Report, and others. He was named by Education Week as one of the “Ten Education Leaders to Watch” nationally and also received the Families in Schools’ “Parent Engagement Leader of the Year Award”.

Dr. Sandy Addis, DirectorNational Dropout Prevention Center/Network, Clemson University

Dr. Sandy Addis currently serves as Director at the National Dropout Prevention Center/Network. He holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from South Carolina State University. He has 44 years of experience in public education in a variety of

roles that include teacher, counselor, coach, principal, system-level administrator, and director of a regional educational service agency. He has designed and administered a variety of dropout pre-vention initiatives that include after-school programs, counseling, and service-learning. Dr. Addis has served as an adjunct instructor at several colleges in South Carolina and Georgia, trained local school boards, and consulted with local school systems on policy and leadership development. He has led educator teams in the development and distribution of student achievement measures and on-line systems for delivery of educator training. Dr. Addis has served on numerous professional boards, testi� ed before legislative committees, and recently chaired the Educator Ethics Task Force of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

Dr. Elaine Allensworth, Lewis-Sebring DirectorUniversity of Chicago Consortium on School Research

Dr. Elaine Allensworth is the Lewis-Sebring Director of the Consortium on School Research, where she conducts studies on what matters for student success and school improvement. Her research on early indicators of high school graduation,

particularly the study What Matters for Staying On-Track and Graduating, has been used to create student tracking systems used in Chicago and districts across the country. In addition to studying educational attainment, she conducts research in the areas of school leadership and school organi-zation. She has been the principal investigator on research grants from funders such as the Institute of Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Dr. Allensworth frequently works with policymakers and practitioners to bridge research and prac-tice, serving on panels, policy commissions, working groups, and review panels at the local, state, and national level.

S. Lee Funk, Ed.D., Executive Director Attendance Institute

With over thirty years as an educator in California, Dr. Lee Funk brings wide ranging experiences to his role as Executive Director of the Attendance Institute, a nonpro�t think tank sponsored in part by SI&A. Besides ten years as a superintendent, he has

worked as an assistant superintendent, sta� developer, principal, and teacher. He is the author of the recently published, The Promise of Special Education: A Guidebook for Parents and Policy Makers and co-author of Pathway to Parent Engagement: The Administrator’s Guidebook.

Throughout his career Dr. Funk has earned respect for his dedication to students with disabilities, adjudicated youth, and students with chronic attendance and/or behavioral issues. He has chaired steering committees along with governing councils for agencies providing regional services in spe-cial education and participated actively in two county-wide School Attendance and Review Boards. While serving as superintendent he was named “Administrator of the Year” by the Butte County Association of California School Administrators and as a “Star Administrator” by Future Farmers of America. He earned a doctorate in Organization and Leadership from the University of San Francisco where he was cited as “Doctoral Student of the Year” for a study that combined scholarship with prac-tical solutions for reducing student attrition from high school.

Yaeko Rodrigues, Director of Research Attendance Institute

Yaeko Rodrigues is the Director of Research at the Attendance Institute. As director of research, Mrs. Rodrigues leads a team of data analysts through large and diverse pools of K-12 education behavior-related data. Her e�orts are focused on longi-

tudinal studies which require normalizing collected data, development of relevant analysis and ultimately drawing insights from the data. With a strong background in K-12 education, software development and analysis, Mrs. Rodrigues brings her expertise in product management, com-pliance and test lab asset management to the Attendance Institute. Mrs. Rodrigues has also held positions at Neohapsis, Inc. as lab assistant and at Ernst & Young, LLP, as education coordinator. Mrs. Rodrigues holds a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese from the University of Montana.
