Senior Advisory Board Minutes October 8th, 2018

Mission Statement and Goals Update Ms. Harris advised the committee that she and Activity Center Manager McCormick compiled previous discussion into a board mission statement. Ms. Harris suggested that the board focus on two or three priority action items as goals for the next year. She informed the board that she had communicated with Ms. Linda Henry from the Aging Coalition about the Age Friendly City action plan. She stated that a special meeting had been added on November 13th, 2018 to review Ms. Henry’s presentation of the plan. Ms. Harris listed education, socialization, and making seniors in the city aware of resources as important items to focus on. She proposed a survey for Puyallup Activity Center (PAC) patrons. She shared that she would also like to see a focus on transportation. Board members Genett and Crozier agreed that a survey would be a good idea for identifying needed changes. Mr. Crozier suggested more health and wellness programs and a focus on transportation. Some of Ms. Harris suggestions included using the PAC bus for senior needs, a transportation buddy system, providing seniors with information about parks and trails in the city that are senior friendly, and outreach to seniors not familiar with the PAC. OTHER BUSINESS: A motion was made by Ms. Genett second by Ms. Strackbein, to add a vote for Vice Chair to the agenda. The motion passed 4-0. Ms. Genett nominated Mr. Crozier as Vice Chair, second by Ms. Strackbein. The motion passed 4-0. Ms. Ugelstad asked how board members are appointed to the board. Ms. Harris advised her that the process is done through an application to the City Clerks office. She also asked Ms. Harris for an update on air conditioning in the PAC center and doing monthly meetings. She noted that the PAC needed maintenance updates and requested that those needs be addressed. Ms. Strackbein suggested getting their board member status on their name tags to wear to the PAC. She also asked about the possibility of extending the meal program to five days a week. Mr. McCormick stated he would see if that was an option. Ms. Harris advised board members that suggestions for the survey could be emailed to her and Mr. McCormick. She also proposed that the next meeting be more discussion base to brainstorm ideas for next year. Adjourned: 4:43 p.m.

Puyallup Activity CenterSenior Service Report

October 2018

Cirque du Soleil: VoltaOn Sunday, October 21st, the Puyallup Activity Center ventured to Marymoor Park for an exciting Cirque du Soleil show under the big top. This high-flying acrobatic show left our trip-goers in aw! Cirque du Soleil: Volta, is inspired by a popular game show host who has been blinded by both fortune and fame. He begins a personal quest to once again find himself by going through past memories after meeting a group of free spirits who helps him during his journey. This acrobatic show will leave yourself empowered to, “fulfill and recognize one’s true potential.” Prior to this amazing performance our seniors enjoyed a lovely brunch at BJ’s Brewhouse.

Holiday Craft BazaarThe Activity Centers annual Holiday Craft Bazaar was on Saturday, October 20th. This special event featured 29 vendors marketing a variety of new, handcrafted, and commercial items from festively dressed booths, a warm lunch consisting of chili dogs with all the fixings and pop. The Bazaar is a great kick-off event for the Centers upcoming holiday season programs and is always a lot of fun for the Center, vendors, and our community. Additionally, many Puyallup residents really look forward to the Bazaar each year because it’s a great way to find that one-of-a-kind item or special gift for someone that simply can be found in stores.

8th Annual Volunteer FairThe Activity Centers annual Holiday Craft Bazaar was on Saturday, October 13th. The event feature 28 vendors marketing a variety of new, handcrafted, and commercial items from festively dressed booths. As in past years, a warm lunch consisting of chili dogs, chips, and soda was available to purchase from the Centers Special events committee and this meal has become a crowd favorite staple and tradition of this event. The Holiday Craft Bazaar is a great kick-off event to the Centers upcoming holiday season programs and is always a lot of fun for the Center, vendors, and our community. Furthermore, many Puyallup residents really look forward to this event each year because it’s a great t way to find that one-of-a-kind item or special gift for someone that cannot easily be found in our local stores.

Sehmel Homestead ParkOn Tuesday, October 23rd, the Puyallup Activity Center explored a beautiful 98.0-acre parklocated northwest of downtown Gig Harbor. This large property includes 76.0 acres of meadows, naturalistic ponds, wetlands, and a forest conservancy area. This lovely park is full of 4 miles of trails, several picnic areas, an outdoor amphitheater and a master demonstration garden along with other picturesque areas. After their trek, everyone enjoyed lite shopping, and their choice of a restaurant for lunch in UpTown Gig Harbor.

Puyallup Activity CenterSenior Services Report

November 2018

Thanksgiving LunchIn partnership with Catholic Community Services, the Activity Center provided a traditional Thanksgiving meal to a full room of seniors on Wednesday, November 21st. The meal was a delicious Thanksgiving feast with carved turkey, potatoes, green beans, cranberries, rolls, and tasty apple for dessert.

Pretty Gritty Antique TourThe Activity Center coordinated a private tour with “Pretty Gritty” to explore the antique scene of one of Tacoma’s oldest neighborhoods. This tour was much more than just simply antiques, trip-goers were shown many of the hidden alleys and passageways that have since become architectural gems, some dating back to over 100 years. During the course, the group strolled around the Old City Hall building, enjoyed ample coffee and shopping breaks, and enjoyed a “new” view of what is a wonderful city.

Molbak’s Poinsettia Festival and Outlet MallOn Tuesday, November 27th the Activity Center made its annual trek to Molbak’s Poinsettia Festival. Molbak’s spectacular garden displays of gift items ranging from live and artificial trees, wreaths, bows, holiday lights, and perhaps most notably their famous 14-foot-highpoinsettia tree, always gets our participants in the holiday spirit. On the return trip to Puyallup, the tour made a much-anticipated stop at The Outlet Collection Mall to continue the festivities. Many of our seniors check off their shopping list with this one holiday trip.

BingoThe Activity Center offers the ever-popular game of Bingo every Thursday afternoon. As it so happens, Bingo is more than just an amusing activity. Clinical research has proven thatparticipating in the game of Bingo has several health benefits, including both emotional and physical elements. For example, playing the game improves overall cognitive componentsincluding short term memory aids, enhanced listening skills, and is a great social activity, all key components for older adults to maintain as they age toward a happy and healthy lifestyle.
