As usual, busy times abound at the center. The month started off with the first of our three flea markets. It was a success and thanks go out to Willie Croskrey, Marlene Flannery and Cousin Ann, Doug Greer, Gillian McGlaze, Terri Ritchie and her friend, Carol Rogers, Tom Steinhaus and all the vendors. Next up was the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon that was held at the Scotts Valley Library. All of our volunteers deserve a huge pat on their backs. As all my volunteers were on a hiatus that day, I would like to give a huge THANK YOU to, Evelyn Anderson, Kristin Ard, Ferd Bergholz, Anita Dilts, Janice Lages, Paula Kuty and Sheila Wilke. It would not have been success without these folks! The Board and I were delighted to have our city council members, City Manager - Steve Ando and President of SV Host Lions - Jay Mosley, in attendance. Congratulations go to Marlene Flannery who was recognized by the Board for her considerable service to the center and its members! Board Chairman, Ferd Bergholz, presented her with a Lifetime Membership. These events were followed closely by the Monthly Line Dance Social and Muncheon Movie. Fran Rosen continues to delight us with her poetry and in this newsletter instead Focus on the Instructor (it will return next month), you will find a poem especially composed just for each and every one of YOU! The monthly dinner came next and oh what a treat it was. EVERYONE enjoyed their gourmet hamburgers and numerous accompaniments and delicious Lemon Lush dessert. Center member, Pearl Mendes, provided the diners with beautiful hula dancing from her home state of Hawaii. She had an appreciative audience. We thank YOU so much Pearl for sharing your dance form with all of us. Lee Brown was the raffle prize winner that evening and she went home with a beautiful double stemmed orchid potted plant. Be sure to sign up early for the July 12 th dinner – for the third year in a row, Harvey and Irene Bustichi will be delighting our palettes with a special family chicken recipe and The Constellations will be performing. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Marlyn Crook and Terri Lesniak for helping to sort flea market offerings for the upcoming July 7 th flea market. It was a big job and I could not have done it alone. Thank you so much ladies! We are looking for some volunteer help, prior to and on the day of, with the next two flea markets. Please call Terri at 818-3107 if you can help. Support comes in all kinds of way: time, talent, treasure. I welcome and thank two brand new sponsors, Hospice of Santa Cruz County and Jesse Gabriel Photography Studio for their support of the Scotts Valley Senior Center. As always, maintaining that support is extremely important too. Therefore, I also thank Dene and Melodie Bustichi of BCI Builder’s Inc. and Senior Network Services for renewed sponsorships with us Please mark your calendars. Don’t forget, your memberships due ARE due July 1 st. …we will be checking everyone’s membership to make sure we have your current information on file. Also, in order to fulfill repeated requests for name tags at events and in preparation for the senior’s discount program I.D. card, you will all need to get your photo taken at the Jesse Gabriel Photography Studio – dates and times are further along in this issue of the newsletter. There will be no cost to you. This card will double as an ID card and name tag. As usual, there is always so much to say and share but I am out of time and space. So very quickly, come out and celebrate our freedom at the July 4 th Parade and Fireworks Extravaganza – tickets are available from Parks and Rec and at various locations around the county. Be sure to enjoy the great lineup of music at Music at Skypark on the last Sunday of June, July, August and September and to stay cool and fit, take the Senior Splash Class at Siltanen Park through Parks and Rec. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTENUnfortunately, death visits us all and this month, in fact whilst I am preparing this verynewsletter, it has visited my family. My dearest father-in-law of almost 28 years WillardCroskrey, passed away a short while ago at 1:00am this morning on June 26th. be for the past 20 years; reunited with his beloved wife and my amazing mother-in-law, Joyce. Rest in PeaceWillard…

SUNSHINE CLUBSince I started in my position, I have tried to keep tabs on our members who are sick, in hospital, arein need of a helping hand or need a shoulder to cry on or an ear to be heard. With the center so busy,I am not able to cover these things like I used to so Rosine Rothwell has offered to help out. Wouldyou like to be a part of this endeavor? Technical and Other Important Senior Information

This month more about cell phones and Smart Cell phone plansDid you know that if you have a smart phone you can set the amount of data that you are charged forwith your cell phone provider? Do not pay for more data than you really need. What is “Data” youask? Good question, ask your Grandkids, or just read on here. Data is any service other than actualPhone Calls. Every time you add a new App, lookup something on the internet, or use some apps, you are using “Data”. Some Cell Phone providers have Senior Plans with lower rates.Did you know that when you use your cell phone at home and you have a wireless networkalready in your house you are not charged against your data plan.Check to see if you have a wireless network in your house that was supplied by your Internetprovider. This means that if you update apps or browse the internet, you are not being charged for it ifyou do it at home. This is also the same if you’re in an area like a restaurant for a coffee shop thatsays that they have free wireless Internet, it works exactly the same way, you are not being chargedfor data. You should be sure the data plan, you are paying for through your carrier, is not a largerthan you need. Your provider can take a look at your past usage and assign a plan to you that is acheaper package sometimes.Be sure that when you are updating or installing apps on your phone, you are at home or in arestaurant or coffee shop that has free Internet access.Another thing that can cost you a lot of extra money is text messaging. If you do not have a textmessaging plan you are charged by the text message which maybe $.10 or $.15 per message. Mostseniors do not need text messaging. The keys in your phone are very hard to use, especially forseniors, and therefore we do not use text messaging as much as younger people. If you do a lot oftexting you may want to look into a plan that gives you unlimited text messages, but if you’re onlyoccasional user of text messages you may want to just pay for them by the message.Have Fun and Great Smart Phoning! These messages are provided by Ferd Bergholz for Your Enjoyment.
