Enjoy friends and fun at the JFCS Senior Center • October 2014 Senior Center Newsletter BRAND NEW THIS MONTH News at the Senior Center Whenever we think a month has been HUGE, another one comes right along to remind us that we’ve underestimated the energy and momentum of The Senior Center. We opened The Center in January. By the end of February, we had 90 members. As of this writing, we now have 400 members! In January we had one activity…Lunch! Art classes followed in March. As of this writing, we offer Arts and Crafts, Tai Chi, educational seminars, discussion groups, book club, entertainment at every lunch, movies, cards and games, books to borrow, computer assistance, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint and the much-needed cell phone assistance! The final quarter of our first year is upon us. That will bring with it many seasonal people who have returned from their families and friends up North. Many of them were members when we started. Welcome back! Come in and see the energy and the magic that happens every day at the JFCS Senior Center. JFCS has experienced a year of dramatic growth in our ability to address the ever increasing needs of individuals and families in Collier and southern Lee Counties. Every year at this time JFCS has a “Friends” Campaign to raise funds to support our services. Funds raised support mental health counseling, geriatric case management, the food pantry, and of course the JFCS Senior Center! Bonsai uses pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-size trees. Fellow member, Jerry Levitt, author of The Sphagnum Moss Bonsai Method, an Illustrated Handbook, will present. We are honored to have three docents from Artis Naples’ Patty and Jay Baker Museum lead three wonderful seminars in October and November. See Marilyn Monroe and Mona Lisa! Meet Peter Paul Reubens and Pablo Picasso. Join these lively art seminars. The series begins this month.

UPDATES ON EXISTING ACTIVITIES FOR OCTOBER LIT WITS The members of the book club will meet to discuss The Girl with the Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier and select next month’s book to read. Listen in on the discussion if you haven’t read the book and be there to cast your vote for November’s book. Thursday, 2-3:30, October 9. ART Hand-Built Ceramics (2 - session class)

Students will create simple forms (such as plates and bowls) from clay that will be fired off site after first session. During the second session, students will decorate their creations with glazes. Objects will be fired and returned to JFCS. Two session class. Monday, October 6 and 13, 10-12.

MONDAY MOVIE MATINEE Every Monday, 1-3: Come for the movie, the friendship and the popcorn! October 6 Under the Tuscan Sun: Diane Lane plays a 35-year-old San Francisco writer whose perfect life has just taken an unexpected detour. Her best friend recommends 10 days in Tuscany. The photography alone is worth the watch! October 13 Witness: A young Amish boy, witnesses a murder in the restroom of a Philadelphia bus station. October 20 Steel Magnolias: Six women (McLain, Parton, Dukakis, Field, Hannah and Roberts) come together in this hilarious and heartwarming story of life, love and loss in a small Louisiana parish. October 27 What About Bob?: In this four star comedy, Doctor (Richard Dreyfus) has a patient (Bill Murray) in therapy. Their relationship is pushed way beyond the office boundaries.
