The Divine Comedy: Thoughts on God, Culture, and Life
with Pastor Darryl
When I was a kid going to Vaca-tion Bible School on the Air Force base church in England, I was taught to memorize biblical vers-es. Of course the first one I re-member learning, and probably one of the few biblical verses that I still have committed to memory, was Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth.” Before this moment of divine creation, we were taught, there was nothing … and out of nothing God cre-ated it all. I would wager, many of you had similar experiences in VBS, and have memories of standing in front of the congregation reciting this verse. I, myself, remember this and making crosses out of burnt matches. Wow, Vacation Bible School was fun! Years later, I enrolled in a Hebrew class in seminary, and again we looked at Genesis 1:1. But this time, we did so with a bit more critical analysis than we did in VBS. And I discovered a few fascinating things about this verse in Genesis and the story of creation. One, the better Hebrew to Eng-lish translation is not “In the beginning ...” but rather “When God began to create …” The first and more familiar translation gives the impression that the act of creation was a one time and done event, while the second car-ries a meaning that creation is never fully done being created, but instead creation is in a constant process of being created and recreated all the time. Two, there was something there before God began to create – Wa-ter! And there was land under the water. Which for me, seems to imply in the story that God uses what is already available to God to create some-thing new, beautiful, bold, and good. Next, God wasn’t idle in the creation process, but God had to work to get it done. Creation doesn’t happen on

The Divine Comedy, continued from page 4 its own, there is an element of work to the creation process. And finally, the end result of the creation process is blessing; the entire creation was blessed by God. So, here we are at our genesis. And I am raring to go, I am so ready to participate with you in our creation events. With God’s help, I have no doubt we will create wonderful new things. But we won’t be creating something out of nothing. You’re not nothing! I’m not nothing! KCC is not nothing! We are something – something beautiful and bold and good. And we will have to work. We have to work! And the work will take on many different shapes and we will wrestle with many different challenges, and so we’ll need all of our gifts and graces to get the work done. Through it all, through the creating and recreating process, we will be blessed. And I am eager to discover those blessings God has for us. For when God began to create … Peace. Love. Understanding.

How many members of the Tate family belong to your church?
There is old man Dic-Tate who wants to run everything, while Uncle Ro-Tate tries to change everything. There's sister Agi-Tate who stirs up plenty of trouble, with help from her husband, Irri-Tate. Whenever new projects are suggested, Hesi-Tate and his wife, Vege-Tate, want to wait until next year. Then there is Aunt Imi-Tate, who wants our church to be like all the others. Devas-Tate provides the voice of doom, while Poten-Tate wants to be a big shot. But not all members of the family are bad. Brother Facili-Tate is quite helpful in church matters. And a delightful, happy member of the family is Miss Felici-Tate. Cousins Cogi-Tate and Medi-Tate always think things over and lend helpful, steady hands. And of course there is the black sheep of the family, Ampu-Tate, who has completely cut himself off from the church. How about it - do you know anyone in the "Tate" family?

Music Section Leader Update
Some of you have noticed that we have had four section leaders since April. As you recall, we were budgeted for two sectional leaders from April on. Shortly after our budget meeting, several members approached the music committee and offered to increase their giving to allow us to keep all four section leaders for this year’s budget. (With the exception of the normal summer break where we have two). As the Leader of the Minis-try of Worship and Nurture Ministry, I would like to thank these anony-mous donors who have allowed us to continue to enjoy wonderful music each Sunday and provide our Minister of Music with increased flexibility in our music program. Please note that at our next budget meeting, we will again have to grapple with the realities of our income vs. our expenses. I hope you will keep our church and music program in your thoughts and
prayers. –Bob Apgar, Ministry of Worship & Nurture
Treats Leftover?
Once again we’ll be collecting leftover Halloween candy to use in stuffing the Christmas stockings for the Cop-ley YMCA Christmas party. A box for donations will be
in Lander Hall.

To enroll, go to KCC's website kensingtonucc.com on your own computer. Under "Serve and Connect" click on "Serve Your Neighbors." You will see
a link to Kiva.org. Click on the link, then click on the photo of KCC and you will see the eight people who have been given
loans by KCC. If you would like to be involved with Kiva.org you can choose either of two paths: You can give money to KCC
earmarked for Kiva.org. If you do that the money will be loaned and reloaned. If you choose to lend directly to Kiva.org you will
need a PayPal account. Direct loaning from your own PayPal account means you are free to withdraw the money after a loan has been repaid.
To motivate new lenders to sign up, a donor is offering to give all new lenders $25 to loan, as well as giving the lending team that invites
them - that would be KCC - $25 to loan. -Sharon Young, Ministry of Missions & Outreach

Pray & Then Pledge Fall is here and that means the Fall Pledge Campaign is right around the corner. Very soon you will be receiving the pledge packet and your 2013 pledge card. We ask that you prayerfully determine how you can give to
KCC in the coming year. Your good stewardship supports every single as-pect of KCC. Our commitment to the financial well being of our church was evident last spring when we agreed on a five-year fiscal plan. Let's stay on
course. Remember there are many ways to give, including via credit card and automatic deduction. Please see the “Give” tab on our KCC web-
site. And, thank you in advance for your generous support of our beloved church.

Sunday School
Re-Enacts
Wedding at Cana As the culmination of their study of Biblical foods and feasts, the Pre-K through 6th grade Sunday School clas-ses re-enacted the Wedding at Cana late in August. Josie Crittenden and Jonas Gentry acted as bride and groom with Eva Playman as Mary and Ciaran Thomas as Jesus. The feast featured a Middle Eastern belly dancer and a lot of thirsty guests. The Trischmans made a spice cake with lavender icing for the festivities. In a beautiful multi-generation dance, we gathered for the hora and lifted the bride and groom in celebration. Thanks to Judit Havens, Debbie Loomis, Bonnie McCar-thy, Becky Playman and Amy Winn for leading “Feast On Faith” this summer.

And So It Begins…
A New Preschool Year September 10 was our first day of
school! The teachers and I are back and ready for the wonderful year ahead.
Sadly, we found out that over the sum-mer many of our families moved out of Kensington --some taking jobs in other
areas of town, others moving out of state to seek employment, still others trying to find more affordable housing. Times are changing and KPS has more available space than we would like, but each day brings phone calls and scheduled appointment dates
for school tours. Our hope and prayer is to fill our classes very soon.
We have some wonderful families this year and many of them showed up bright and early on Sept. 8 to clean and spruce up our playground. Satur-
day 9/8 was a very busy morning. We scrubbed toys and equipment, sweeping, blowing and power washing. With so many, we were done in record time. I’d like to thank Mike Burnett for his cleaning and prepping; Mike is always a major part of smoothing the transition from summer to
the start of school. Mike assembled new equipment, painted shelves and touched up scuff marks on walls and stairways. He filled our sand boxes,
replaced the old bark around plants, trimmed trees on the playground and much, much more. “Mr Fix-it” Rocks!
October is an exciting time for the preschool as children adjust to their
new school and settle in. The end of the month will bring our little ghosts and goblins out to the ever popular church sponsored Halloween carni-
val. The classrooms will be filled with spooky fun and lots of surprises!
If you know of anyone with a 3- or 4-year-old child who might be interest-ed in enrollment, we have a few spaces available. Please contact me
