New QualificationsCurriculumforExcellencehasbeenrunninginScottishsecondaryschoolssince2010 andhasbrought a newwayof learning into schools, equipping learnerswiththeskills,knowledgeandunderstandingtheyneedtosucceedinthe21stcentury.Theskills that learnersdeveloptodaywillhelp themtosucceed in lifeoutsidetheclassroom.TheScottishQualificationsAuthority(SQA)hasdesignednewqualifications thatwill help learnersdemonstrate and recognise the skills,knowledgeandunderstandingtheyhaveacquiredatschoolorcollege.

Progression in Learning in the Senior PhaseExperiencetellsusthatpupilsmovingthroughtheSeniorPhasecurriculumareoften surprised by the increase in challenge represented by a combination ofNationalsandHighersintheirnewcurriculum.Aspupilsmove through theSeniorPhase,pupilswillchooseaminimum of 5 subjects.Therearesomeexceptionsforpupilsoptingfor2AdvancedHighersormore.
All pupils are expected to remain in their courses and fulfil the course demands for the duration of the year.

The course choice process is essential to ensure pupils are directed into the appropriate pathway. This, thereby, provides every pupil with the skills andpersonalqualitiesdesired tosustainapositivedestinationbeyond theirschoolyears.
2 Progress in CoursesSelectingcoursesat theappropriate level of challenge, so thatyou canmakeprogress is important. If you’re curriculum is either too challenging or notchallengingenough,itcancausealackofmotivation,engagementandprogressinlearning.Itisessentialthatyoutaketeachersadviceontheappropriatelevel.

SubjectsSubjects are traditionally what have been offered in schools and representknowledgeandskillsinaspecificsubjectarea.Thesecoursescontain160hoursoflearning.SQAdefinepupillearningas:
• Programmedlearning-primarilythroughteachercontact.• Independentstudy-primarilythroughhomeworkandrevision.
AllSubjectsareScottishQualificationsAuthorityaccreditedwithpupilsachievingcourseawardsfromNational3-National5,HigherandAdvancedHigher.
Wider AchievementWider Achievement courses offer youngpeople uniqueopportunities togainessentialskillsthatwillenablethemtodeveloptheirskillsinapracticalcontext.
Wider A (3 Periods per week) - These have been created to offer pupils theopportunitytodevelopfurthertheskillsthattheyaredevelopingintheirsubjectbasedcurriculum.Byoffering this levelof enhancement,pupilswill beable tofocusonasmallnumberofkeytopicsintheirchosenarea.
Wider B (2Periodsperweeks)-Theseprovidethewiderrangeofexperiencesthataimtosupportskillsforlearning,lifeandworkbeyondsubjectbasedlearning.Someofthethesecoursesmaytakeplaceonoroffschoolcampusandwhereappropriateadditionalqualifications/accreditationmaybesecuredthroughtheseprogrammesoflearning.
Other Courses (S5 & S6 Only)Other Coursesreflectthediversenatureofyoungpeopleandtakeintoaccountnewandexcitingopportunitiestodevelopknowledgeandskills.Other courses aredeliveredaspartofourSchoolCollegePartnershipwithEdinburghCollege(SighthillCampus)withpupilsattendingCollegetwoafternoonsperweek.PupilswillbeexpectedtomaketheirownwaytoandfromthecollegecampusandalllearningandassessmentwillbeledbyEdinburghCollege.
AllOther Courses are ScottishQualifications Authority accreditedwith pupilsworkingtowardsachievingcourseawardsatN3-N5orindividualunits.
Please note that any of the above (Subjects, Other Courses or Wider Achievement Courses) can only be offered when there are viable numbers and staffing.

All pupils will study English and Maths. Please choose 6 other courses in total in order of preference. Please note that the school offers up to 6 Nationals in S4. Pupils will hopefully be allocated their choices plus English and Maths. Courses will only run if there are sufficient numbers to make them viable.
To ensure progression in learning, pupils should, where appropriate, opt to study their best courses out of the other subjects they have been learning in S3. If a pupil wishes to take up a new subject this must first be discussed with Guidance.
