Term 4 is certainly moving very quickly and both Staff andStudents in the Junior School are working very hard.

This term is full of school events and school celebrations. InWeek 1 we had a JS Expectations parade in the Sports Centre.I was impressed overall with the behaviour of the students.Myself, the JS Deputy Principals and the Deans all spoke to the7-9’s about displaying a Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset. Wepresented the students real life examples of people displaying aGrowth Mindset and strategies to foster this. Our final messagewas to give your best effort through positive demonstrations ofour TORO values.

I have been spending the start of each day helping out theDeputies and Deans in terms of kids being in uniform, wearinghats, ready to learn and punctuality to school. Theoverwhelmingly majority of students are doing the right thingand we are supporting any students who are not. Parents canassist by checking each night that your child is ready to go toschool the next day in terms of their uniform, equipment, device(fully charged), having a good sleep, breakfast and being ontime to school. We are thinking about some positive rewardsthat we can offer to high performing students in this area. Onething we will be doing is offering use of the pool for selectedstudents during the break time. With the oncoming hot weather,I reckon this will be very popular.

We had a fantastic Year 7 ‘Fun’ Parade in Week 2. You cansee highlights of this on the school Facebook/Instagram. Wehad a huge variety of performances including music, dance, comedy including a Russian Dancing (Cossacks) showdownand a Ventriloquist Act! The kids absolutely loved it. They are allsuper keen to be involved again and the Year 8 and 9’s all wantto do similar.

The Music Showcase was held in Week 3. What a fantasticevent. The student performances were so impressive andcongratulations to all staff involved. The highlight of the nightwas when Natsuo in Year 8 took over the conductor role for asong!

Huge congratulations to our new Chess champs! MrO’Donohue took a team to the 2021 Inter-School Girls StateChess Finals. Liza in Year 7 channelled Beth from QueensGambit and cleaned up at the championships. She won theindividual prize for best performance from any high schoolstudent!

As per usual our Attendance this term is more important thanever and we want every student to be at school every dayif possible. We want to finish the year strongly with studentsattending every day, learning and having fun.

The junior secondary phase of learning provides a strongfoundation in your child’s education that is necessary forsuccess within the senior school. Should you have furtherquestions please feel free to contact myself or any of the JuniorSecondary schooling team.

TORO values are referred to continually. We see them in everyday actions in the classroom, at breaks and communitymembers contact us about what they see publicly. This isbecause as a school community we promote the considerationof all people. T – Teaching and Learning; O – Ourselves; R

– Responsible Relationships; and O – Our Community. Forour community to prosper everyone needs to feel valued andappreciated so thank you to all parents, staff and students whoassist in embracing and modelling the TORO values, reinforcingthat everyone should be treated with respect and dignity.Throughout TORO lessons and curriculum lessons there aremany opportunities to extend and develop the life skills ofstudents giving them the best possible foundation for success, lifelong learning, wellbeing and self-assurance.

Learning Readiness

This term we have reinforced the importance of punctuality andpresentation through the uniform. A high standard in personalappearance helps students develop their self-confidence andresearch tells us that uniforms reduce the potential for bullying, improve study ethic, remove distractions from the classroomand improves student safety. It also instils with students asense of professionalism in order to prepare them for life afterschool. Future employers’ value this. You also demonstrateyou are committed to your ‘job of learning’ and you aresubsequently regarded as a reliable person. Doors ofopportunity open without you noticing, for all of the abovereasons. Being punctual not only refers to being on time forschool, lessons, work or appointments. It also means you arephysically and mentally prepared for your ‘job of learning’ whenyou arrive.

Goal Setting

Recently, students have reviewed their academic report andidentified an area that they want to improve over this term. Many often have a big gap between the goals desired and theeffort they are putting into those goals. It's easy to say thatyou want to be a successful student. It is much more difficultto make it actually happen. Motivation is so important becauseyou must be willing to work hard in the face of boredom, fatigue, distractions, temptations or pain. The reason motivationis so important is that it is the only contributor to performanceover which you have control. Supportive conversations fromparents are so important to maintain focus on achieving theirgoals through developing the belief and a positive ‘can do’mindset.

Attendance

A reminder that all Junior Secondary students are required toattend school until the last day of Term 4 – Friday, December10.

Year 12 students are currently doing external exams, but foreveryone else it is business as usual. Junior students arepreparing for the business end of this term to demonstrate theirlearning progress. If you have any questions regarding workbeing completed across this time, please feel free to contactthe class teacher, Dean of Students or Deputy Principal of theyear level.

Graduation

The Year 9 Graduation Ceremony will be held at school onMonday, December 6 at 10:00am. It is the opportunity tocelebrate transitioning from primary school and three years ofhard work to get students prepared for the complexities ofSenior Secondary. At this stage, we are likely to be holding

this ceremony for students only with parents able to watch theceremony live on a device or later in the day.

Further information will be out in the coming weeks on thisexciting day on the Junior Secondary calendar.

At Southport we continue to underpin all learning with a focuson the development of the whole person, because JuniorSecondary is a vital stepping stone in your child’s educationand future, and together we can make a difference.
