Focus on…Joint Pain–Orthopedics
Do you have a knee, hip, shoulder or another joint that really hurts? Is it limiting your life?
There are many kinds of pain caused by different conditions. Injuries, disease processes,
deterioration of the joint itself, missing fluid or cartilage that keeps bone from touching
bone—some of which can be excruciating. Is this normal as we age or could it be something
else? And even if it is normal aging, do you have to endure the pain?
What can you do about it? There are many new treatments and solutions, some of which
you may never have seen before. Come learn from the experts of the TriHealth Orthopedic
& Spine Institute what can be done to help your pain.
TriHealth Orthopedic & Spine Institute: helping people of all ages live pain-free, active livesAs we age, pain in our joints can impede the activities of daily living that we all cherish.
Therefore, it is important for those who suffer from orthopedic pain to choose health care
providers that are equipped to help alleviate that pain as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Through its integration of physicians, hospitals, and outpatient locations, the TriHealth
Orthopedic & Spine Institute offers a broad network of services that people of all ages
throughout Greater Cincinnati need to live pain-free, active lives.
Across the Institute, physician specialists in Orthopedic Surgery, Physical Medicine &
Rehabilitation, Hand Surgery, and Sports Medicine join together to offer a variety of services,
from joint replacement and fracture care to pain management and sports medicine.
The institute now has more than 40 physicians throughout Hamilton, Butler, and Warren
Counties. These same physicians perform procedures at TriHealth hospitals and surgery
centers, using state-of-the-art operating rooms and inpatient orthopedic nursing units.
Good Samaritan Hospital has been recognized by The Joint Commission as a Center
of Excellence for hip, knee, and shoulder replacement, and its “Zero In On Zero” program
has shown incredible results in reducing the amount of infections, blood transfusions,
and re-admissions following joint replacement surgery.
Call 513 569 5400 to find an Orthopedic and Spine Institute physician or service near
you. It’s no wonder why more patients choose TriHealth for orthopedic care than any
other health care system in Greater Cincinnati.

4. Keep Your Body MovingYes, we have said this before, and it is still the strongest thing
we can say—you have to move to keep your joints working.
Physical activity while watching television, line dancing,
gardening, and walking are all good for you. The key is to pick
one or two and keep with it—that’s what will help with joint
pain. This class will address fears and concerns, plus we will
even get up and get moving, so dress appropriately.

5. Low Fat v. No FatOne of the best ways to reduce joint pain is to reduce your
weight. If a manufacturer removes the fat from your favorite
cookie, does that mean you can eat five of them? NO! The
fat must be replaced with something to make the cookie still
taste good and have that satisfying texture. What do they
replace it with? Seaweed? Can you eat too much seaweed?
Our favorite dietician, Kathy Haugen, RD, will teach us about
calcium and Vitamin D, and also about the no fat/low fat hype.

Calcium and Vitamin D— More Important As We Age
Calcium is needed for our heart, muscles and nerves to
function properly, and for blood to clot. You can drink
gallons of milk, but unless you get the required amount
of Vitamin D, it won’t do you any good. Your body must
have Vitamin D to absorb calcium. If you do not consume
enough, your body will take it from your bones. This creates
a “Swiss Cheese” kind of bone that breaks very easily and
can lead to fractures, hospitalization and surgery.
You can get Vitamin D in three ways; 1) through your
skin (from sunshine), 2) from what you eat, and 3) from
supplements. The daily recommended dosage for those
over age 70, is 1,200 mg (600 IU – international units)
which is hard to get through diet alone. Egg yolks, fortified
milk, fortified cereals, fortified orange juice, beef liver, fish
with edible bones (sardine, anchovies) or cheese are good
sources. Supplements are usually the best way to ensure
you get enough Calcium and Vitamin D. Taking supplements
throughout the day is recommended, instead of all at
one time.

Osteoporosis and Arthritis Treatment through Infusion (IV) Therapy Chronic pain from arthritis or a related disease is all too
common. For approximately 50 million Americans, dealing
with dull, sharp, pressure or burning pain is a persistent
problem that impacts daily life. Infusion (IV) therapy has
proven to be a highly effective method of treatment for those
suffering from the chronic pain of many musculoskeletal
conditions. Very well tolerated with few side effects, Infusion
(IV) can help with the prevention of fractures of the hip and
spine, future joint damage and it can help slow the progression
of certain conditions. For those needlessly suffering from
recurrent pain associated with one of the following conditions,
Infusion (IV) Therapy can be a powerful option.
• Osteoporosis • Gout
• Rheumatoid Arthritis • Lupus
• Psoriatic Arthritis
TriHealth has 5 board certified Rheumatologists available
to help you. Ask your physician for a rheumatology consult
to see if Infusion Therapy (IV) might be an option. For more
information about locations and how to connect with a
TriHealth physician, go to TriHealth.com, click on Services
