H APPY CANADA DAY (a bit be-lated)! I do hope you were able to
take part in some of the festivities to celebrate our great home. The Legion? The Parksville parade or fireworks? I sure enjoyed our involvement last year in the Canada 150 parade and enter-tainment on Veterans Way. And, would-n’t you know it, the longest day of the year has already come and gone. It would certainly be great to have those hours of daylight for a lot longer! I guess we are a bit spoiled in that way when we live just north of the border. My grandsons, who now live in California, were up for a visit and quite impressed by the late evening they hadn’t experi-enced in some years. It gets dark about 7:00 pm further south. June was, as usual it seems, another busy month (sure makes time fly, doesn’t it). Again this year, the Board of Directors had the pleasure of serving our wonderful volunteers at the Appreci-ation luncheon on the 2nd. The Summer Solstice brought the par-ty of the same name on June 23rd. Lots of good food, great music, and fun dan-ing that evening! Vonda and Grant of the New Vintage Band certainly, once
again, guaranteed us a great time. My usual HUGE THANK YOU to
all who set things up, worked in the kitchen and put everything away when the time came. Sure a superb bunch! To finish the month (on the 25th), strawberry shortcake was devoured by the folks who were smart enough to be there to thoroughly enjoy the wind-up (for the summer) presentation of our own Ukulele band. What fun they have and what terrific music they produce. And, soon we can once again enjoy the summer Barbecue on the water-front at Rotary Park. The date is Thurs-day, July 19th and the instructions are: 1) to feast again on steak or chicken superbly barbecued by the Walsh family and 2) to sign up soon as this is a very popular event! As this is an off-site event, make sure to do that. The last day to sign up will be Monday, July 16th … strictly enforced! Be prepared for some enjoyment in August as well … the PANCAKE BREAKFAST will be at the Centre on Saturday, the 18th and the now annual PICNIC at the BEACH will happen on
Thursday, July 19 at Rotary Park
Gate opens at 3:00 pm
ONLY $25 Please sign up by the 16th at 3:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 26th. Of course, I do expect the summer weather will do as last year and last all summer! I don’t know about you, but I need a few months of good weather to get all the work done that I have lined up for myself! The next VIB (very important business) will be happening in late August, but please start thinking about it soon! Our AGM happens in mid October, and part of that is choosing of the Board of Di-rectors for next year. WE NEED peo-ple!! The other part is possible presen-tations of Life Membership to someone who has gone far beyond to further the quality of the Centre. Be prepared to fill out a nomination form if you know of such a person or persons. Successful nominees will be chosen by the Life Membership committee, chaired by Maggie Coleman. (NOTE: the Life Membership Form is on page 6 for your convenience). We sure wish ROY JONES, our dedi-cated and diligent Facilities director, all the best in recuperating after the fall which broke the femur in his right leg. It ain’t easy to get the pieces back togeth-er and get back on your feet at our age! Here’s a little humour that fits with our age … I am not a ‘glass half full—or half empty’ kind of person. I am a “where did I put my glass?” kind of person. Oh well, who needs a good memory—I think we get more exercise by walking around trying to find things!
Leaning to pursue happiness may elude you, but if you focus on your family, the needs of others, your work, meeting people, and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you! Age 65

We are a group who are exploring different methods to
become more aware of ourselves, others and the
world we live in. One method we will focus on is
sound awareness—can it help us do that? We will be experi-menting with different aspects of sound—chanting, toning, vocalizing, listening to music,
etc., in order to become calmer, more peaceful and healthier. You are invited to join us and find out where your voice/sound is. Other options to learn and grow our

“Slow down, you move too fast” - Remember listen-ing to that song by Simon and Garfunkel when it came out in 1966? We can take that advice even now-slow down-in our busy world. If we slow down, we have the opportunity to make connections to our body and our breath to see how they have an intelli-gence we can learn from, for our well-being. In these sessions, we intend to take the time—slowly and deliberately—to focus on ourselves through our bodies and breathing. Using somatic exercises and meditations, we will explore these relationships and connections in order to develop an appreciation of

IF YOU LIKE ORANGES YOU WILL ENJOY THESE MUFFINS
1 large orange cut in 1/4’s with
peel (remove any seeds) 1/2 cup orange juice
Puree in a food processor or blender. BLEND IN:
1 large egg 1/2 cup butter or margarine or oil
2/3 cup sugar. (I used oil as it is quick and worked
out great, also used Navels as no seeds! )
COMBINE: 1-3/4 cups flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp
baking soda and 1/4 tsp salt. Add to the orange mix,
don’t over mix. Pour into prepared muffin tins. Bake at
400 deg. for 20 minutes or until pick in middle comes
out clean.
I added chopped walnuts and raisins (dredged in some
of the flour mix to prevent settling on bottom of pan)
Dried cranberries would be good too. Enjoy!

Limited space! PAT WEBER’S ‘Ride the Rails’ trip filled three buses and headed to Port Alberni and the steam train ride to McLean Mill including a scrumptious roast beef dinner, an array of gifts and raffles. A job well done Pat! Many thanks to TREVOR WICKS for the splendid article from the dockside Way West Cruise to Lund (in the June newsletter). Very much appreciated and we hope you will travel with us as more trips come along. Your help was wonder-ful. We visited the IMAX/ROYAL BC MUSE-UM June 24th and it was GREAT! We took in the new Imax theatres EGYPT SHOW and the most educational ‘PANDAS’. Having watched the movie in IMAX fashion, it was truly great to walk into the museum and see the tremendous exhibition. Talk about the hard work and

Delicious Angel Food topped with strawberries and whipped cream was served to a crowd gathered to hear the strumming and singing styles by the QB Ukulele Band, directed by Judy Palipowski. Bruce Foden dribbled to the tune of ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ and Elaine
Chu performed a variety of lovely Hawaiian dances. Folks joined in singing many of the familiar songs we all know … a nice way to get the summer holidays underway.
We have a request to those who like to
chew gum, to please discard it in a tissue before depositing in the waste basket … most appreciat-ed by those volunteers who clean up each day at the Centre.
