SENT BY GODIn Amos’ time
the vocation of prophethad achieved a veryformal status in Israel.The prophets had arisen,originally, to act asGod’s voice when Israelwas no longer led by thespiritual/civil figuresknown as “judges,” butby monarchs. Overtime, the monarchy hadappropriated the officesof priest and prophet,established them intocompanies, and reservedthe right to appoint
courtly prophets. Then, as now, when those in power also got tochoose who would act as their official conscience, thingssometimes went awry. At such times, God raised up prophetsfrom unlikely places, and this is how Amos received his vocationas prophet. In last week’s Gospel we heard how Jesus was raisedup as God’s anointed from a place many viewed as unlikely. Aswe continue to discern our own vocation as baptized disciples,we can be assured that we are, in Paul’s words, “chosen,destined in accord with the purpose of the One whoaccomplishes all things according to the intention of his will”(Ephesians 1:11).READINGS FOR THE WEEKMonday: Ex 1:8-14, 22; Ps 124:1b-8;
