Braeswood Place Neighbors,

School has started! This means a lot more activity in our neighborhood in the morning and afternoon. Be cognizant of pedestrian crosswalks and of children and families walking and biking. More cars parking temporarily near the schools for drop-off and pickup can make it more difficult to see children. Slow down. Budget more time to get to your destination. Thank you to the many neighbors who have already paid their annual BPHA dues. SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

Is your garage an easy way for burglars to enter your home? Garage doors present a weak spot in home security and a convenient place where thieves can load up their loot out of view. More than like-ly, if you have an attached garage, it is the way you enter your house. Burglars know that this presents an easy way inside for them as well.

Here are some ways to secure the garage as an entry: For convenience, many people leave the garage door open during

the daytime. Bad idea. When not in use, keep it closed. Use the Garage Butler, available on Amazon for

$90, or something similar. These devices automati-cally close the garage door after a delay you select. They offer great peace of mind, and they help you avoid circling back around when you can’t remem-ber if you closed the door.

When on vacation, turn off the power to the garage door opener. Without power, the opener acts as a very strong lock. There are de-vices that allow thieves to search and capture your remote signal and open the door with a push of a button.

The door leading from the attached garage into the house is almost always left unlocked. And since it is annoying to use a key every time you enter that door, install a simple push-button lockset. They are easy to install and allow quick entry without a key. It is a great way to increase security without slowing your entry.

If you have a gun safe in the garage, keep it hidden behind a wall or a curtain and always attached to the floor or wall. Safes are easy to spot from the street and, despite their size and weight, they are easy for thieves to load up and haul away.

A homicide in our neighborhood You may have heard on the news or from neighbors about a homicide that occurred in Braeswood Place. In late July, our deputies and HPD officers responded to several disturbances involving a 41-year-old man who lived with his mother in Braes Heights. On Saturday, July 30, the man walked into Fire Station 37 on Stella Link wearing just his underwear and acting erratically. The firefighters called HPD and officers took the man back to the house that he shared with his mother. When they arrived about 5:30 pm, officers discovered the body of his 76-year-old mother who had been shot to death in the hallway. The man was arrested and has been charged with murder. Although some of the early records are incom-plete, it appears that this is just the third homicide in the 70-year his-tory of Braeswood Place.

2016 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

by Fabia Hill National Night Out (NNO) will be on Tuesday, October 4 this year. NNO is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighbor-hoods safer, better places to live. Sign up now to host a NNO gathering on your block! The gathering can be anything from inviting your neighbors over for watermelon, hosting a dessert potluck, renting a bounce house or a petting zoo - the sky is the limit! NNO provides the opportunity to participate in crime prevention and neighborhood camaraderie. Plus, the Constable Patrol will make the rounds to the different gatherings introducing themselves and letting homeowners know more about crime prevention. We can provide you with materials such as check-list, an invitation, and sign-in sheets to make the planning easier. If you would like to host a gathering on your block, please contact Fabia Hill, NNO Chair, at [email protected].

BRAYS BAYOU ASSOCIATION By Billy Pilgrim

The Brays Bayou Association held its monthly meeting on August 15 at the Gathering Place, 5310 South Willow. There was a large turnout. The guest speaker was former City of Houston Council Member At Large Position 1 Stephen Costello. Costello has been appointed COH Resilient Officer, also known as Flood Czar by Mayor Sylvester Turner. Costello presented a program outlining his duties and responsibilities in his new role with the city. For more details go to the BPHA website at www.braeswoodplace.org and click on “Notices”, “Choose a Category (drop down arrow)”, “Flooding and Brays Bayou.” Project Brays – Bertner to Bevlyn/Timberside outfall contract: Work on Phase 1 is progressing with only a few snags (utilities) being encountered. As of mid-August, Phase 1 was about 10% complete. The contractor has the option of working more than one phase at a time. He has exercised that option and began excavation of Phase 6 during mid-August. Phase 6 is the segment from the Buffalo Speedway Bridge west 2,200 feet to the Bevlyn/Timberside outfall on the south bank. Inclement weather during mid-August stopped excavation until conditions improved. The Hike and Bike Trail was closed and detoured until completion of Phase 6. Poor Farm Ditch - HCFCD has not provided a time line for the increase in capacity of Poor Farm Ditch project.

HUCKLEBERRY PARK

by Karen Stopnicki The Huckleberry Park Fun Run kicked off with a Pep Rally on Monday August 29 at Mark Twain Elemen-tary. On Friday September 9, all students will receive their free Fun Run tee and will run laps to raise money for Huckleberry Park! We are counting on the money from this Fun Run to complete the funds we need to get Artificial Turf installed on the field instead of temporarily installing sod. If you have a neighbor participating in the Fun Run, please consider sponsoring with any amount. The kids have fun with the event and more im-portantly, the money goes to a good cause which benefits the entire neighborhood. We are extending a big THANK YOU to the following corporate sponsors:

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL by Jessica Evans

Welcome back to school! Longfellow's first day on August 22 went smoothly and teachers and students were excited to be back at school and get the year off to a great start. A new dance teacher joins the magnet team this year--welcome to Justine Gingell! All Longfellow students, both neighborhood and magnet, participate in the fine arts magnet program at Longfellow. Students in Pre-K, Kindergarten and first grade rotate through all of the magnet classes and then at the end of first grade, students pick one area (either music, dance, band, orchestra, art or general fine arts) on which to focus. The magnet program at Longfellow offers a fantastic fine arts education with amazing instructors. If you are interested in learning more, please come for a tour this Fall. Our principal hasn't changed, but her name has! Congrats to Mrs. Carter (formerly Ms. Gwynn-Perez) on her marriage. The Longfellow community is so grateful for her tireless leadership these past five years and the Leader in Me program she brought to the school. We look forward to another great year! If you have a preschool-age child and are interested in learning more about all that Longfellow has to offer and how you can be a part of making your neighborhood school great, please contact [email protected] for some future information sessions we are putting together.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY Submitted by CRIME STOPPERS

Whether you have children going to school this fall or not, we all share the same roads. Consider the following when school resumes in August: Did you know?

It’s illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. It’s illegal to pass a school bus on the right? The law requires that traffic in both directions stop on undivided roadways when students are entering or exiting a

school bus. The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous place for children. They are unpredictable so be extra

cautious. Drivers should not block crosswalks when stopped. Crosswalks should be kept clear for pedestrians to cross the

street safely. Safety starts at home. The following are different tips to consider as we are getting ready for school to start soon.

Ensure safety by having your child wear proper footwear. Rubber sole bottom shoes are the best. Ensure that your child is familiar with your contact information in case of emergencies.

Whichever mode of transportation you choose, Be Safe and Be Aware of your surroundings. Talk to your child about personal safety:

Stay in well-lit areas. Walking/biking alone can be unsafe, have a friend with you. Familiarize your child with the neighborhood. – show them the safe places they can go if they need help such as

the fire station, police station, trusted stores or business offices. Never talk to strangers or get in their car for a ride. Let your child know who their emergency contacts are and who is authorized to pick them up from school. Have your child check with a school official if someone known and familiar attempts to pick them up from school

but is not on the authorized list. Be sure your child knows your home address and number along with the phone number of another trusted adult. Teach your child to report suspicious people to you, teachers, police officers or responsible adults. If your child is approached or followed by a suspicious person or vehicle:

o Scream o Run away in the opposite direction o Run to a safe haven o Call 911

Crime Stoppers of Houston is committed to keeping Houston safe and provides monthly safety tips to our community. Please visit www.crime-stoppers.org for additional crime prevention information.

Many of us have seen an aging parent or relative lose their capacity to make decisions. About the only thing worse is adding a financial tragedy to that personal one. It happens more than most people know, because of the haphazard way financial decision making is sometimes transferred from one generation to the next. Typically a close relative steps in and takes over. That’s fine for simple things like paying bills. But what about making sure investments are allocated, tax deductions are being taken and charitable giving is in line with the person’s wishes?

These duties may go to advisors who are not in close contact with the relative, much less each other. The door is left open to miscommunication, mistakes or even theft. Fortunately, there is a way to avoid these problems. It’s called a microboard. This is agroup of people who collaborate to manage the care and assets of an individual (or couple) who needs some level of help. To whatever extent possible, the person in need of help directs the board according to their own wishes. When the board must act on its own, it focuses on the welfare of that person. Board decisions might include arranging for assistance in the home, allocating assets, or making sure the will is in order.

The board is like a family that meets to coordinate actions for a relative in need. A close relative often starts the board, but it should also include one or more trusted professional advisors. In my experience, optimal results come from members who provide checks and balances against each other as they work to ensure the best interests of the person at the center of it all—the beneficiary.
