A former teaching piece, I am thrilled that this beautiful reproduction is now available to all. I love the diverse border and the history reflected in this sampler. Currently in the collection of Richmond’s Valentine Museum, the “invitation to Lafayette” obviously intrigued other sampler lovers as well and resulted in a conservator’s report by Susan Adler while a student in the Winterthur/University of Delaware Graduate Program in Art Conservation. I found some fascinating research about Anne Maria and her sampler in Valerie’s blog here including her gravemarker, as well as great insight into Lafayette’s relationship with George Washington.

From the chart: “This beautiful sampler is a stitched history of the Redd-Goulding-Broaddus families. All of these families were located within 50 miles of the Fredericksburg, Virginia area. It was begun by Lucy Redd sometime in the early 1800’s. The year 1797, which is on the sampler, was her birthday. We believe several generations were involved in the stitching. The initials and names on the sampler are of people in the family.”

Special Treats in Baltimore

From Summer House Stitche Workes, the releases available thus far in Beth’s beautiful “Calico Sampler Series,” each row comes as a chart for $6. See page 9 for Carol’s wonderful “Noel” using Beth’s charts in this series.

Left, beautiful, glorious new 12-ply Tudor Silk, Gloriana’s new fine 120/2 silk released at the Baltimore Market in 19 introductory colors (more coming in the future), available in 5-yard skeins, $5.25/skein in the following colors: Antique Black, Autumn Arbor, Bellagio Red, Birch Brown, Cabernet, Candy Apple Red, Cinnamon, Flowers of Italy, French Blue, French Blue Light, Golden Squash, Halloween Green, Hazelnut Dark, Italian Gold, Olivine, Pine Barrens, Soft White, Spanish Moss & Tangerine. Because of some vision problems, I haven’t been able to try this new silk yet. I’m told it’s wonderful over 1 on 40 & 45c and may be plied for over 2 on 36 & 40c, although I personally prefer not to ply silk. That’s why I stitch with silk in the first place, so no plying is necessary! Can’t wait for my new eyes to try it out!

This stunning over-one version of Ink Circles’ “Cirque des Cercles” $16 was on display in Tracy’s suite in Baltimore ~ I’d give credit to the stitcher but wasn’t able to learn whose it was. This is one of many reasons why I enjoy going to a needlework market: there are always wonderful surprises around every corner.

Also From Ink Circles

Left, finally, another, the fourth in Tracy’s Cirque Series following Cercles, Triangles & Carreaux, “Cirque des Coeurs (Hearts) $16, 247 x 185, perfect for your favorite overdye ~ and, below, “Litt le Al ien Schoolgirl” $18, a great demonstration of Tracy’s sense of humor and an illustration that she designs and stitches what intrigues her and if you, too, choose to stitch it, that’s wonderful! She describes this as “a reproduction of Roswell time capsule artifact from a future colonial mission,” in case you were wondering “what a schoolgirl sampler might look like made by a young girl on an alien planet at some time in the future.

Left, “Holiday Magick” $4 that Tracy explains was inspired by “an old alchemical treatise that provided a squiggly glyph with the text instructing a person to embroider it in red silk on the garment worn closest to the heart to protect the wearer from evil spirits.”

Right, ornaments made from the 2-part chart, the combined efforts with Cherrywood shown on page 7.

Did you know . . .. . . that if you stitch in hand, an important trick for avoiding soiling your work is to roll your work with the right side in? Peggy came in the shop yesterday with a recently completed piece and asked about how to avoid soiling of the linen while stitching. Rolling it with the right side to the inside avoids direct contact with your work. When you store your work, you should always fold your linen with the right side to the inside as well, for the very same reasons.
