Welcome to The Courtyard

Welcome to The Courtyard

The autumn season at The Courtyard always brings a wide variety of quality productions for you to choose from. I hope you agree that it provides a perfect mixture of what we think our audiences like best about Herefordshire’s Centre for the Arts.

Having celebrated working at The Courtyard for 10 years this year, I am delighted to bring you a programme that I feel is stronger than ever and celebrates everything that The Courtyard has achieved. Especially now that we have been recognised nationally by Arts Council England as one of the 650 organisations they will continue to fund over the next four years, a major achievement for us and for Herefordshire.

Some of the highlights of the season that I want to draw to your attention are the amazing company Lip Service who will be performing their production of Withering Looks, a potted version of Wuthering Heights and the lives and letters of the Bronte sisters. This comic, yet quite literate romp through their works is a must see this season.

London Classic Theatre return with their latest production of Equus. Originally staged in 1973, this Peter Schaffer play was inspired by a true story. Peter Shaffer’s unique psychological thriller explores the complex relationships between worship, myth and sexuality. Both thought-provoking and moving, this is high on my list of ones to watch.

Mid Wales Opera make their annual pilgrimage to Hereford with Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, containing some of the most sumptuous music ever written for the opera stage. With such a popular title this is guaranteed to book quickly, so make sure you call the Box Office or, better still, book on-line at any time of day as soon as you can.

Of course the highlight of the year for many of our patrons has to be The Courtyard’s traditional family pantomime. This year I am delighted to welcome back Mr Tim McArthur, as Dame Katherine Weale, in what I know will be an enchanting production of Sleeping Beauty. It’s never too early to book for the show, and you are never too old to enjoy the magic of the pantomime here.

I am very much looking forward to what the next 10 years will bring for us at The Courtyard, and hope that you will join me and the rest of the team here for many more visits this season.

Everest – By The West RidgeIn the Studio

In March 2006 a team from the British Army set out to climb Mount Everest via the notorious West Ridge. This remote route had only been previously climbed by 19 people and a successful ascent had not been made for 15 years.

After 55 days of fixing ropes and establishing camps the Expedition was ready for its first summit attempt. In stark contrast to the hundreds of people preparing for their own summit bids on the popular North Ridge and South Col routes, the Army team was all alone battling along the West Ridge. The solitude was welcome.

Just after midnight on the 21st May 2006 a team of 4 climbers and 2 Sherpas left the safety of Camp 5 high on the North Face of Everest and climbed towards the top of the world’s highest mountain.

Expedition members Guy Homan and Malcolm Russell recount the inside story of Everest West Ridge 2006 using dramatic photos and video footage taken from high on the mighty mountain.

Chris Farlow & The Norman Beaker BandChris started in the music business during the ‘skiffle’ boom… winning the All England Skiffle Championships at Tottenham Mecca Ballroom in 1957. Skiffle soon gave way to Rock and Roll and Rhythm and Blues.

Chris’ band is the five piece Norman Beaker Band. Norman Beaker has been at the forefront of the British Blues scene for the last three decades, playing with the likes of Alexis Corner, Jack Bruce, Paul Jones and Eric Burdon. BB King commented “Norman is like a white Freddy King” a compliment indeed.

The Browning Versionby Terence RattiganIn the Studio

This one act play is widely considered to be one of Rattigan’s finest pieces of theatre, and this production of “The Browning Version” coincides with his centenary this year.

Andrew Crocker-Harris, a Classics Master at a 1940’s public school is more at home with ancient Greek than he is with real life, especially his wife. Ridiculed by his fellow teachers and pupils alike, he is facing forced retirement due to ill health. But with his world slowly crumbling around him, he receives a surprise gift from an unexpected source, which triggers a change for Crocker-Harris...

Featuring a strong cast from Herefordshire-based Appletree Theatre, the story of “The Crock” continues to resonate as strongly with today’s audiences as it ever did.

Zoe’s husband Liam finds his wife’s erratic behaviour increasingly difficult but when he suggests a trip to the cinema all manner of strangeness begins to unfold. ‘The Slip’ takes you from egg and chips to the edge of time and back again.

Confusion, twists and mental turmoil are expertly and imaginatively depicted by the performers whilst choreographed movement helps to create the play’s hazy time zones to great effect. The physical creativity of this troupe is a delight and joy to witness.

Claridge Nursing Homes is proud to support The Courtyard’s classical music events.

“We’ve been supporters for several years now and are delighted to be sponsoring the 2011-12 Orchestras Live concerts and Hereford Concert Society’s season,” says proprietor Richard Claridge. “Supporting such high quality music is a good reflection of our own ethos as a provider of the highest standards of nursing and residential care in Herefordshire. We’re also pleased that The Courtyard has appointed an Arts and Older People’s Officer, Alex Outhwaite, and we are looking forward to working with her on various projects.”

“We’ve witnessed The Courtyard develop into a vibrant centre for the arts that is now renowned throughout the region as a leading

provider of education and entertainment while creating exciting opportunities to develop and showcase new talent,” says Director of BBR Optometry and No.40 Sunglasses Nick Black. “This dynamic approach closely reflects our own values as a leading independent practice offering the highest possible level of service and expertise to clients throughout Herefordshire and the surrounding regions.”

“We’re pleased to announce our new partnership with The Courtyard, becoming their preferred taxi service and this includes placing a free

taxi phone on the Box Office counter,’ says Chairman John Jones. "High Town Taxis is the longest established taxi firm in the county and is run as a cooperative of owners, all of whom are locals. We’re looking forward to working with such a vibrant and busy arts centre.”
