driving range, and adding trees among otheritems. We have negotiated the purchaseof new golf carts for both courses and wewill be installing a new awning at the CentreCourt Café (after hurricane season). Wewant to extend our congratulations to JeffWaber and Joe Hubbard who won thissummer’s Pro-Superintendent GolfTournament, and also Bob Bettinger whowas selected for Boca Raton’s new GreenCouncil as chairperson. Broken Sound willhold its own “Green Fair” this year onJanuary 15th.

All of our managers have been working onthe upcoming seasonal schedules and youwill receive these shortly. Our Director ofFinance, Dianne Hart, has worked closelywith all of our directors, to finalize a budgetwith minimal increases. Broken Sound is inexcellent financial condition and I want topersonal ly thank al l of the club’smanagement staff on their hard work inmonitoring expenses without sacrificinghospitality and amenities.

Our social calendar has some exciting eventsincluding Tony Orlando, and the “Let’s HangOn” show with all of the Four Seasons musicand the Jay White show which is a NeilDiamond tribute – even Neil Diamondrecommends him! Our big “welcome back”Member Member dinner dance is Saturday,November 14th. Also, this year, in lieu ofTanglewood, which has been here for thelast few years, we will be having a SanGennaro Festival on February 27th. We willalso have the 92nd Street Y presentationsagain with the first one scheduled forOctober 1st. Our New Year’s Evespectacular last year wi l l again bespectacular with one change as formalattire will not be required.

As you can see, we have been busy and wewill continue to add to our schedules andupdate everyone via emails. If you are notcurrently receiving the club’s emails andwant to be added to our list, please contactthe Membership office.

On a personal note, I hope that everyonehas enjoyed their travels, time with family,or just plain relaxing during the summer.

Sincerely,John Crean, CCM CHAGeneral Manager/Chief Operating Officer

I truly want to thank all ofyou for supporting theclub, especially in thiseconomy. We continue toserve lunches every day, dinners in the main club

and pool grille, day trips, dinner dances, children’s events and our great comedynight in June with Sarge, and we’ve hadone of our busiest summers ever. I alwaystell our staff that the club should be anextension of everyone’s homes and whenyou come here for cards, lunch, dinner orany of the activities, I want to reinforcethat feeling of hospitality. We all spend manyhours here and as a result, we becomesomewhat of a family and that applies toboth staff and members. I think of thataspect as one of the main reasons tobecome part of Broken Sound.

Before detailing any of our other activitiesduring the summer, I would like to commenton one of the many rumors floating outthere – we do not plan on building anunderground garage! There are so manyrumors I’ve heard about the club’s longrange plan that I want to take thisopportunity to let you know that you will bereceiving letters and emails about upcomingmeetings we will be having in the fall sothat everyone can obtain the rightinformation. You have all received lettersstating that the long range plan was onhold for the past year. We did let everyoneknow that permits were filed with the cityof Boca and that we had a plan from thearchitects for some much-neededrenovation, especially moving the ladiescard room downstairs, for safety as wellas practical purposes, and expanding theparking lot (above ground). Whateverrumors you have heard about the specificplans or dollar amounts are probably notcorrect and I urge you to be patient untilyou receive the correctcorrectcorrectcorrectcorrect information.Everyone will be notified of the upcomingmeetings and there will be numerous datesand times so that you all should be able toattend before you have the opportunity tovote on the plan.

As for all our projects during the summer, they are really too numerous to detailbut we have been doing basic maintenanceand housekeeping, painting, fixing chairs, landscaping and doing work on thegolf course including aerification onboth courses, modification of the Old Course

Dear Members,I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and we look forward to seeingour “snowbirds” soon. However, we do have many year round membershere so our activities don’t stop in the summer.

The second answer to this question is thatby being part of the Lesson Academy youpush yourself to take those half hourlessons since they have already been paidfor and you are gaining a half hour ofsupervised practice from a golfprofessional. Finally, the Lesson Academyencourages you to take lessons, practiceand improve your game.

Those who have participated in the LessonAcademy in the past have found this isnot only the most value for their dollarbut where their game shows the mostimprovement.

MaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenanceWe may be done with the main aerifications for the summer but will still continueto pencil tine and hydrojet the greens right through October to keep the turf onthe greens as healthy as we can through the fall and winter months. We addedmultiple beds throughout the course with one highlighted one to the right of #8men’s tee which is a butterfly/Audubon garden. At any time you will be able to seethe different stages of the butterflies’ life as they will thrive in the plantings wehave chosen. This is just one of the several Audubon projects throughout thecourse we will be setting up along with bird and bat houses.

It was probably the hottestsummer on average each day thisyear than I can ever remember. However, that was good and bad.The good is it thickened up thefairways enough for the ball tostart sitting up more. We havelong worked on getting to thispoint since the reconstruction.

The greens remain in excellent shape with a coupleof continuous weak areas that had a hard timemending in the excessive heat (that was the bad), yetwe are still giving them tender care to fill in and bestrong in time for opening play.

You will note a couple of projects we threw in thissummer, one being the total transformation behind#14 green. It was felt that even good shots would notstop on the putting surface, so therefore, we filled inthe catch area at the back and gently sloped thebackdrop to keep decent shots on the “short grass”.

Next, we added a tee to #14 behind the red teeswhich has been on our minds for a few years. Thiswill give the players of the white and green tees amore direct shot at the middle of the green withouttraversing the lake body. However, do not be deceivedby the angle as being a pushover as we can still takethe tees to 190 yards to a back pin placement.

Also added were various aquatic plants installed alongseveral lake banks to deaden the look of low waterbanks and to enhance the naturalness (i.e. lake on #7)for the wildlife and aesthetics. As these plants takehold and mature, I believe the course will only bemore stunning than what has been presented.

We rebuilt the front greenside bunker on hole #16with new sand material and an advanced underneathmatting. Let us know what you think on the lookand the playability of the sand over the next severalmonths. We have not had a good rain yet to see howthe faces will do with a hard downpour but we aretrying to come up with solutions for the future.

Last, the rear driving range tee needed someoperational upgrades to expand it and improve thequality of the look for the golf professionals to givelessons. The tee top is just slightly smaller than thecurrent main one by the chipping green. We hope tohave the tee completely grown in, smooth andsoftened by October.

We willhost the Girls 18 and under division singlesand doubles. This is a great opportunity towatch the future of tennis from around thecountry in your back yard. The matches willbe played from 8am to 8pm. Come outand support this great event at your club.

Having a game planestablished before you hitthe ball will give you comfortand confidence whenexecuting your shots. It isalso a great way tounderstand what is workingwell during a match or what

adjustments you may need to make as you are playing.

There are two instances in particular when it isabsolutely critical to have a game plan:

When returning a serve:Before you hit the return, know where you are goingto hit the ball (i.e. cross court, down the line, lob, orshort). It is also imperative to know where you wouldlike to be positioned after the return: Are you goingto go to the net or are you going to stay behind thebaseline? The starting position of most players is inno-man’s land. Although this area is at times a placewhere you have no choice but to hit balls from, it isnecessary to move out of this position immediately, either forward toward the net or backward behindthe baseline. By having a game plan when returningthe serve, you can position yourself favorably!

When hitting your serve:Decide ahead of time where you would like to placeyour serve in the box. Know if you are going to serveinto the body, to the forehand, or to the backhand. You should also know what you are going to do afteryou hit the serve: Are you going to the net (serve &volley), or are you staying back behind the baseline?Believe it or not the serve dictates the return. Knowingthat you have the power to set yourself up successfullyshould mean that you never hit your serve without athoughtful game plan!

Make sure that when you establish a game plan beforeyou serve or return take a quick 5 seconds to meetwith your partner to let him/her in on the plan...

The power is yours, and it’s all in the game plan!
