22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Today’s Scriptures

If you’re looking for a simple moral message in the readings this week, look no further than humility. After all, the Book of Sirach seems to say, doesn’t God prefer the devout who stick to God’s wisdom rather than speculating on things beyond them? Won’t God reward those who keep taking the lower place at the table, according to the gospel parable? As with most moralistic interpretations of scripture, the be humble explanation misses something because the humility involved is part of the larger issue of who’s invited. The second reading raises this question: Who’s welcomed into God’s presence, the old Isra-elite assembly or the new one formed by Christ’s sacrifice? Luke offers an answer: Everyone is invited. Jesus overturns what the peo-ple of his time would have expected at a table—seating by social rank and no unclean folks at all. Where humility is needed is to be open to the possibility that at God’s table everyone gets in, spe-cifically those in humble circumstances, and there’s no reserved seat-ing.

- JoelSchorn-www.preparetheword.com The inner word: What’s in your heart? ONE TIME when Jesus went for a Sabbath meal with one of the top leaders of the Pharisees, all the guests had their eyes on him, watching his every move. He went on to tell a story to the guests around the table . . . . “When you’re invited to dinner, go and sit at the last place. Then when the host comes he may very well say, ‘Friend, come up to the front.’ That will give the dinner guests something to talk about! What I’m saying is, if you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end up flat on your face. But if you’re con-tent to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.” Then he turned to the host. “The next time you put on a dinner, don’t just invite your friends and family and rich neighbors, the kind of people who will return the favor. Invite some people who never get invited out, the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks. You’ll be—and experience—a blessing. They won’t be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned—oh, how it will be returned!—at the resurrection of God’s people” (from Luke 14). From A New Message 4 Next Week (actapublications.com/newmessage4nextweek) based on The Message: Catholic/Ecumenical Edition by Eugene Peterson (ACTA Publications, 2013). You can pay me now or pay me later The funny thing about Labor Day is that it’s the one day of the year no one expects to work! We celebrate work by not doing any. We honor the value of labor by putting it out of our thoughts for an extra-long weekend. Work is an activity we es-teem most when we’re not doing it. In a period of unemployment, (continued in next column)

(continued from previous column) for example, work seems like the grandest and most longed-for opportunity of all. One of the best things about work, of course, is payday. While there are some activities to which we volunteer our time without compensation, mostly we expect to be reimbursed for our efforts. Even if we don’t take a check for our labor, as with domestic chores, we do anticipate the benefit of a little praise and ac-knowledgment. Someone, we think, ought to sit down at the ta-ble and say: “Honey, this is delicious!” Or stand back, admire our installed bric-a-brac, and give us a little hug of approval. Once in a while, it’s even nice when someone stops at the door of the church and says: “Great homily, Father!” In the reign of God we’re given to understand that most situa-tions are valued in a way distinct from worldly standards. The last are first, the highest-placed people find themselves demoted to the lowest place, and for all of us who do well to humble our-selves, the greater we rise. Those least appreciated in this world receive great esteem in the new creation. The idea of a compensa-tion package still holds, but payday doesn’t exactly come on Fri-day. Only the truly missionary souls among us would embrace a contract that included Easter Sunday in return for Golgotha Fri-day. When it comes to the heavy lifting of saving a fallen world, God takes on that job personally. While we traditionally consider work the cursed result of origi-nal sin, we might also recall that it is God who labors first: in the six days of creation. Work is therefore a blessed endeavor, a par-ticipation in the co-creation of history. It’s part of the likeness we share with our Creator that we bring things into being by eve-ning that weren’t there in the morning, just as God does in the first pages of the Book of Genesis. Whether it’s baking a casserole or producing clean laundry; serving customers or compiling a report; teaching a class or making a hospital bed: Our daily labors earn more than our daily bread. By our work we take the low place of service for which the dividends, we understand, are spec-tacular. —Alice Camille-www.preparetheword.com

Questions Catholics ask DOES RECONCILIATION TAKE HUMILITY?

“MY CHILD, conduct your affairs with humility,” the Book of Sirach says. Saint Augustine was once asked: What is the secret of holiness? He said it is humility. Then he said the second and the third secrets of holiness are also humility. In order to grow in holiness you need humility, and there is no better way to become humble than to participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation. Sin is predominantly an act of pride. So forgiveness comes from the opposite: being humble. There is no greater act of humility than to say, “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.” And that brings about God’s grace. A benefit of every sacrament is an encounter with Christ, and one of the greatest things that Jesus did was forgive sinners. When you go to Reconciliation you are encountering the same Christ who forgave Peter and so many others in the gospels and who welcomed Matthew the tax collector and the other disciples even though they had let him down during his hour of suffering.

Please Pray For...

Coffee and Donuts will be served this Sunday, September 1, after 7, 9 and 11 a.m. Masses. The St. Vincent de Paul Society will serve milk, coffee, juice, donuts and bagels and six old fash-ion donuts, sometimes referred to as “old fashion” - that is with-out icing or additional sugar content. We hope you can attend after Mass.

Eleanora Pacanowski-Grba was buried from St. George Parish on Monday, August 26, at 10 a.m. Mass. Eleanora was a regular at the 6 a.m. Mass and she worked in the old “Hidden Treasure” fund raiser. She married Matthew Grba at a 6 a.m. Mass on Au-gust 21, 2004. She is the mother of Mickey Terry of our parish. Please pray for her soul and keep her family in your prayers as they grieve her death.

The Affton Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy will be here on Sunday, October 6th from 7:30 - 10:30 am to provide flu shots. Each shot equals a $3 donation to the Church! Help our Parish and yourself. Here are some reasons to your flu shot at St. George on this date:

1. Saves you a trip to the doctor, and possibly a co-pay. 2. Keeps you from having to stand in line somewhere. 3. Donates $3 to St. George for every flu shot given. 4. Gives you the opportunity to enjoy the company of friends and some refreshments. Signup sheet is located in the breezeway.

NEWS FROM THE 50 PLUS CLUB: Our next meeting will be this Friday, September 6, at 1:30 pm in the Parish Center. If you missed our last meeting, you missed a great treat of ice cream and cookies. We thank Delores Dimarco and Dot Lavezzi for hosting this treat. This is the last meeting for you to sign up to come to the October buffet luncheon. See Mary Jane to make your reservations. Cost is $7. If you would like more details about our 50 Plus Club, call Mary Jane, 481-2316. As always, we ask that you remember to bring an item or two for the Affton Food Pantry. The need is al-ways there. Thanks. We hope you were able to enjoy this last summer holiday.

(continued from previous page, column 2) Reconciliation is a personal encounter with Jesus who is full of mercy and compassion, and there is no greater way to experience God’s love than to experience God’s forgiveness over and over again. –Father Britto M. Berchmans Adapted from vocationnetwork.org/articles/show/330

Sign & sacrament Be generous because you can “Love one another.” “Forgive everyone.” “Give to those who cannot repay you.” These sayings of Jesus seem like a lot of hard work with little re-ward. But nothing could be further from the truth. Have you ever left a large tip for a tired waitress or waiter? Or put money in an expired park-ing meter you happened to walk by? Or smiled at a store clerk who was having a difficult day? Such gestures generate feelings of gratitude and well-being that do not come any other way. If we spent only a few min-utes every day thinking of a small gift we could give to someone, just imagine how our world would change! Try it today—then do it again tomorrow. For more “Sign & sacrament” material, search the Prepare the Word database by today’s scripture reading, a particular theme, or a special occasion.

There will be no GRIEF PRAY & SHARE on Thursday, September 5th. The meeting has been moved to Thursday, September 12th. For more information contact Mary Ann Courisky at 353-4909.

September 1, 2013 - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. George Parish School of Religion invites you to be a part of our program. For volunteer opportunities, please call Monica Johnson 314-695-4687.

St. George would like to have a German style meal, along with some good German music and perhaps a little dancing after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, October 26. A little beer to wash down the food would certainly add to the eve-ning. In order to organize this event, we need a few volunteers. Volunteers could chair a food committee, a drink committee, an entertainment committee, a cleanup committee and a decoration committee. Volunteer your time and talent. Call Mary Jane Deiters - 481-2316. We need a good social event. This parish needs to have some fun.
