Habakkuk i.:2-3;212-4/ z Timothy r:6-8, r3-e4 Luke r7:5-ro

l'm not the world's bravest Person. When I got to college, I was delighted

that I no longer had to go on roller coasters or into haunted houses to avoid

my friends'mocking for being afraid. My college buddies didn't base our

friendship on whether lwent along with the crowd. lcould say, "No, I really

dislike coasters and haunted houses. See you when you get donel" lt was

liberating.

Life is full of much scarier things than amusement-park rides and fake

goblins. We hear the prophet Habakkuk speak of some of it in today's first

reading. Evil, violence, strife, destruction-add to that cancer, natural

disasters, Alzheimer's, domestic abuse, and unemployment, and sometimes

it can take a lot of courage just to get up in the morning.

As a person who's more fearfulthan most, I take hope in St. Paul's reminder

to Timothy today: "God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather ofpower and love and self-control." Feeling afraid is a normal human emotion,

but it's not what God wants for us, and it isn't part of the spirit God gives us-

As St. Paul reminds us, the Holy Spirit "dwells within us." The Spirit is the

source of our daily strength; the Spirit can get us out of bed when all feels

lost; the spirit helps us persist in the face of incredible challenges.

Do we have faith in this Holy Spirit-faith at least the size of a miniscule

mustard seed? lf so, it's enough. With such faith, we will experience the

courage to face our fears and to trust that God is with us through them all'

CGNFIRMATION & BISHOP'S PASTORAL I/NSIT

Bishop Larry Silva will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on :.o of ouryouth. We thank you for your support and encouragement of our YouthMinistry and their families. Please continue to pray for them as they seek

God's will for their lives.

All are invited to join us for a celebration after 9:3o a.m. Mass and an

opportunity to speak with Bishop Silva, our Chief Shepherd, about yourconcerns and visions for our parish.

SURVEY RESULTS

A parish-wide survey was conducted during the weekend of August 24-25,

2oi-3 with 106 surveys turned in. lts purpose was to determine relevancy ofour zoo6 Pastoral Plan goals and to solicit inputs on current operations and

future priorities. The results are as follows:r Over ToVo suggested that we maintain our course with the three goals of

safety and well-being of kupuna, being a welcoming parish, being goodstewards of our finances, and satisfaction with current parish operations.

r Parishioners suggested the following priorities: r-Youth & Young Adults, z-Community & Evangelization, 3-Worship, 4-Other, 5-Social Ministry, 6-

Faith Formation, 7-Parish Leadership Development.r The youth and young adults are the future of th.e parish and we should

explore all opportunities to be living examples of our Faith, foster goodChristian behavior and guide them through increased involvement, participation and providing leadership roles in parish ministries/activities.

r Emphasis on air conditioning, air flow and physical improvement in caring

for our elderly was identified in the "Other" category. These issues are

being addressed in the Parish Master Plan and with the Stewardship &

Discipleship Min istry.r Finance is an underlying concern that called for a more deliberate

approach in addressing facility maintenance and physical improvements. The Pastoral Council extends a hearty "thank you"

for your participation in this recent survey.

Only two weeks away. Be sure to sign up to volunteer to help families in need..

de ar PAD Rf,

I take care of my mother, who has dementia. I was uery active inlny parish, but now I hnrdly haue a minute to spare for prayer,

much less hclping out at clrurch. I'm getting uery deprased. Whnt

slnuld I do?

I have several ideas. First, make your prayer life part ofyour mother's routine, and you'll find it easier to fit intoyour day.

People with dementia find it soothing to listen torepetitive prayer, so consider praying the rosary aloud inher presence. Sometimes people with advanced dementiacan still remember and recite the Our Father and HailMary, so you could end up praying the rosary together. That would truly be a gift. Next, try reading aloudScripture stories from a youth Bible. They'll be easier forher to understand than passages from an adult Bible, and

you'll get some time with God's Word. Last, butabsolutely not least, it's important for you to be

connected.

If your parish has a parish nurse, he or she can help youfind respite care, in which someone takes your place withyour mom so you can get away for a while, or a caregiver-support Soup where you can talk with other people inyour situation. If your parish doesn't have a nurse, yourdiocese can give you the same information.

Remember, attending to your spiritual health doesn't justhelp you-it helps your mother too.
