ln the comic strip Zits, "one" of the recurring characters is a couple named

RichandAmy (no spaces). They're high school sweethearts drawn in a permanent

embrace. They've spent so much time physically entwined that their friends now

see them as one person with one name: RichandAmy.You probably know a real-life couple like RichandAmy, and the media often see

celebrity couples this way: "Brangelina" and "Bennifer," to name two.ls this what Jesus meant by "the two shall become one flesh" in marriage? I don'tthink so. I grappled with this reality when preparing for my own marriage. How do

two separate, unique people "become one flesh"?It's not an either/or experience, I believe. The married couple becomes a new,

united creation, but at the same time, each partner retains his and her

individuality. My husband and I didn't become "JanelandRon" on our wedding

day-we became a new kind of "Janel and Ronr" united in Christ. We each

maintain our own friendships, hobbies, and interests outside of our marriage,

since neither of us can completely fulfill each other's needs'

But as a married couple, we became a new creation, bound uniquely in God. I

cringe when couples light the unity candle at their wedding and then extinguish

the two individual candles. Shouldn't all three candles remain lit to represent twopersons-still unique individuals-whom God has joined in a new sacramental

union?ln today's Gospel, Jesus clearly upholds the solemn and holy nature of marriage.

He isn't a "third party" to be welcomed into a marriage-he's the very bond of love

between the couple. When a married couple loves each other, Christ is present. ln him they are, at thesame time, two individuals and one flesh.

YEA,R CF FAITH

Pope Benedict XVI has declared October Li1 2oazto November 24t 207-2.

as the Year of Faith. The upcoming Year of Faith is a "summons to an

authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of theworld" (Porta Fidei 6).ln other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunityfor Catholics to experience a conversion - to turn back to Jesus and enter

into a deeper relationship with him. The "door of faith" is opened at one's baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and

rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.Celebrate the opening Mass of the "Year of Faith" on

Tuesdan October gth at 7.oo p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa.Sign up if you need a ride or if you are able to drive others. Mahalo.

M]\HALO

October zSth after 9:3o a.m. Mass.

Mahalo also to those who participated in the Eucharistic Adoration day. The

air in the chapel was 'thick' with a spirit of worship. We trust that God willcontinue to bless those who came and those who were unable to.

to come by. Cost was $44o vs $4o,ooo. Mahalo Mr. Petty.

Celena

Dear Celena,

There's no such thing as a wasted prayer.

Believers are in communion through an active relationshipthat transcends death, and prayers and sacrifices by the livingbenefit the deceased (see 2 Maccabees 72:38-46). In turn, thesouls in heaven are part of the communion of saints, and theirprayers benefit the living.

This mutual assistance affirms our belief in an earthly and

heavenly Church forming one body in Christ.

The CatecLrism of the Catlnlic Church teaches, "Those who diein God's grace and friendship imperfectly purified, althoughthey are assured of their eternal salvation,

undergo a purification after death, so as to achieve theholiness necessary to enter the joy of God" (1054). Thisprocess of purification is known as purgatory. Souls in a state ofpurgatory also benefit from our prayers.

If a soul is already in heaven and thus no longer in need ofour prayers, the graces ofour prayers are passed from heaven

back to us or to other souls in need. Accordingly, then, it is

God alone who distributes prayers.

Moreover, a heart that offers a lifetime of prayers for deceased

loved ones is most pleasing to our Lord.
