Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 8, 2017 Have no anxiety at all, but in eve-rything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.

— Philippians 4:6

BEARING THE RIGHT KIND OF FRUIT Today’s readings focus our attention on vineyards. Isaiah’s song concerning his friend’s vineyard begins with inspir-ing and poetic images of an idyllic vine-yard where the choicest harvest is ex-pected. Instead, the vineyard yields wild grapes, which causes the owner to abandon it. The psalmist cries out to God, asking that God once again take care of the vineyard, which is the house of Israel. The parable told in today’s Gospel offers a stern warning that those who commit treachery in the hopes of attaining personal wealth will be “put . . . to a wretched death” (Matthew 21:41). Jesus warns his listeners not to act like the murderous tenants in the vineyard. Instead he exhorts them to produce the kind of fruit that will lead them to the kingdom of God. Copyright © J. S. Message from Father Chris: All of you are aware of the devastation that Hurricane Maria brought to Puerto Rico and the earthquake in Mexico brought to Mexico City and the surrounding region. Thousands are in critical need of support. Given the proximity of the collections for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, Bishop McElroy is hesitant to call for another special collection but he asked the pastors at the Convocation last week, to make an appeal for support, in an appropriate way and at an appropriate time. We will be taking a second collection on October 22, the Bishop’s and I continue to appreciate your generosity and support in these matters.

Dear Parents,

We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with you in teaching our faith to your children.

Here at St. Thérèse of Carmel we are dedicated to helping parents help their children grow in faith and be closer to God. Proper and comprehensive growth in faith formation is extremely important, especially in today’s constantly changing world.

If you have not registered your child for Faith Formation, there is still time. The registration forms are on-line at www.stocsd.org

We wish to thank all the parents and parishioners who volunteer their time to teach our children. Thank you for sharing the good news of our faith with the next generation so we might grow in our love of God and service to our neighbor. SToC Faith Formation Team
