The model of love by which we will be judged, according to the parable of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25: 31-46), is that of people who feed, clothe, welcome and care for the needy and strangers and so actually doing all these things for Jesus. Our American Catholic bishops call on us to do more: “The common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition of all other human rights, is not defended with maximum determination.” Talking about the value of human life and the sacredness of human dignity becomes empty platitudes unless we act on our convictions. No good social policy, like programs to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless as important as they are make up for bad policies about protecting life itself. Without the fundamental right to live - the right not to be killed - every other right is undermined. Without life itself, no other human rights are completely safe. So it is up to all of us to defend the right to life by participating directly in public life, by helping to enact laws and policies that respect the lives of all, especially those who have no voice unborn children, human embryos targeted for destructive research, people who have almost no financial resources and people who are cognitively impaired, disabled, or dying. TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

OCTOBER – MARY’S MONTH

CREATED, LOVED, REDEEMED BY GOD – AN INVITATION TO RESPECT ALL HUMAN LIFE

Most of us may take for granted, at least some of the time, that we are created, loved and redeemed by God.

Distracted as we are by the noise and activity of daily life, we really need to pause and think about the universal human

question: Who am I, and what am I doing here?

When our ancestors lost their spiritual and moral bearings over and over again, Jesus took on our humanity to

demonstrate God’s radical love for us. His love for us was and is personal, passionate and self-giving. He showed us what

God expects of us. “This is my commandment: Love one another as I love you” (John 15:12). The model of love by which

we will be judged, according to the parable of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25: 31-46), is that of people who feed, clothe,

welcome and care for the needy and strangers and so actually doing all these things for Jesus. Pope Francis gave us that

message again when he visited with us in the fall of 2015.

Even when we slip up on this, as we all do, we hopefully understand the importance of treating everyone with great

kindness. We understand how important it is to work with our own parish food pantry and our Catholic Charities serving

people in need by donating our time and financial support. Our Bishop’s Annual Appeal gift to Catholic Charities is an

example of doing this well. Our very generous response last weekend to our collection for those victimized by the

hurricanes and earthquake is all done for Christ’s little ones.

Our American Catholic bishops call on us to do more: “The common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human

rights – for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture – is false and illusory if the right to life, the

most basic and fundamental right and the condition of all other human rights, is not defended with maximum

determination.” Talking about the value of human life and the sacredness of human dignity becomes empty platitudes

unless we act on our convictions. No good social policy, like programs to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless – as

important as they are – make up for bad policies about protecting life itself. Without the fundamental right to live - the

right not to be killed - every other right is undermined. Without life itself, no other human rights are completely safe.

So it is up to all of us to defend the right to life by participating directly in public life, by helping to enact laws and

policies that respect the lives of all, especially those who have no voice – unborn children, human embryos targeted for

destructive research, people who have almost no financial resources and people who are cognitively impaired, disabled, or

dying. We must respect all life!

God Bless, Fr. Herb Monday, October 9, Columbus Day, we will celebrate one Mass at 9:00 AM. The Rectory Office will be closed.

WORDS OF TITHING:

From the Pastor: As we experience the blessing of giving,

we find ourselves giving more.

Words on tithing from the pews: Returning to God part of

my income made me realize that I must return more of my

time to those around me.

Weekend Collections: September 2017 - $70,418.50–

averaging $17,604.62 each weekend. (4Weekends)

Weekend Collection: September 2016 - $– $66,376.48-

averaging $16,594.12 each weekend. (4Weekends)

AUGUST REPAIR PROJECT REPORT

ALL YOUR GENEROSITY MAKES THIS HAPPEN

THANK YOU SO MUCH

Our Narthex tile project is complete. The porcelain tile is a new slip

resistant product for our greater safety. We acknowledge very

generous donations contributed specifically for this Narthex floor

replacement. We hope you are pleased with the results.

We have completely resealed and re-grouted our beautiful decorative

stone front church entrance. This work is necessary to keep all the

stones securely in place and to stop any damaging water seepage

behind the stones. We must do this work every 3 or 4 years.

We are very glad to report that we have finally repaired and resurface

the oldest and most damaged parts of our main parking lot in front of

the church. We hope you notice this when you come into and leave

the parking lot. This was our largest remaining project that we had to

accomplish from our original 2013 list of 5 parish “Partners In

Faith” Projects.

About our other 4 “Partners in Faith” projects: (1) The entire

outside church walls replacement (complete); (2) Replacing the

church lighting with brighter LED, money saving light fixtures

(complete); (3) Replacing the 20 year old parish truck (complete); (4)

Rectory Repairs (staff front office area has been upgraded – nothing

else is done yet). Thanks for making this all happen.

Many of us, including me, are still working on our pledge payments

for the 5 year pledges we made in 2013. Many families have already

completed your campaign pledges. The Diocese has been sending us

our 25% campaign rebates each year ($42,484.83 this year) to help us

accomplish our 5 parish projects. We will get another rebate in 2018.

We thank everyone who have completed your pledges, and everyone

still making payments on our 2013 pledges.

Thankfully, many “Partners in Faith” contributors, and so many

other parishioners are now generously responding every week to our

own Moving Forward – Growing Stronger Together parish appeal

from this spring. Your blessed generosity in “Partners in Faith” and

your increased weekly collection contributions in Moving Forward –

Growing Stronger Together are providing us with the financial

resources to confidently make the important repairs and

improvements we have made this summer for everyone’s safety and

greater convenience.

We ask God to continue blessing your outstanding generosity to our

parish and our diocese. Please, everyone in our parish, keep praying

for our parish and our diocese every day.

Gratefully, Father Herb

yo los he amado.”

mueren. ¡Debemos respetar toda vida!

Dios los bendiga,

Padre Herb

SAINT JOHN XXIII – OCTOBER 11TH

Pope John XXIII (Latin: Ioannes XXIII; Italian: Giovanni XXIII; born Angelo Giuseppe

Roncalli, Italian pronunciation: [ˈandʒelo dʒuˈzɛppe roŋˈkalli]; 25 November 1881 – 3 June

1963) reigned as Pope from 28 October 1958 to his death in 1963 and was canonized on 27 April

2014. Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was the fourth of fourteen children born to a family of

sharecroppers who lived in a village in Lombardy. He was ordained to the priesthood on

10 August 1904 and served in a number of posts, including papal nuncio in France and a delegate

to Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. In a consistory on 12 January 1953 Pope Pius XII made Roncalli

a cardinal as the Cardinal-Priest of Santa Prisca in addition to naming him as the Patriarch of

Venice.

Roncalli was elected pope on 28 October 1958 at age 76 after 11 ballots. His selection was

unexpected, and Roncalli himself had come to Rome with a return train ticket to Venice. He was

the first pope to take the pontifical name of "John" upon election in more than 500 years, and his

choice settled the complicated question of official numbering attached to this papal name that

arose because of the existence in the Middle Ages of an antipope of using the name. Pope John

XXIII surprised those who expected him to be a caretaker pope by calling the historic Second

Vatican Council (1962–1965), the first session opening on 11 October 1962. His passionate views

on equality were summed up in his famous statement, "We were all made in God's image, and

thus, we are all Godly alike." John XXIII made many passionate speeches during his pontificate,

one of which was on the day that he opened the Second Vatican Council in the middle of the

night to the crowd gathered in St. Peter's Square: "Dear children, returning home, you will find

children: give your children a hug and say: This is a hug from the Pope!"

Pope John XXIII did not live to see the Vatican Council to completion. He died of stomach

cancer on 3 June 1963, four and a half years after his election and two months after the

completion of his final and famed encyclical, Pacem in terris. He was buried in the Vatican

grottoes beneath Saint Peter's Basilica on 6 June 1963 and his cause for canonization was opened

on 18 November 1965 by his successor, Pope Paul VI, who declared him a Servant of God. In

addition to being named Venerable on 20 December 1999, he was beatified on 3 September 2000

by Pope John Paul II alongside Pope Pius IX and three others. Following his beatification, his

body was moved on 3 June 2001 from its original place to the altar of Saint Jerome where it could

be seen by the faithful. On 5 July 2013, Pope Francis – bypassing the traditionally required

second miracle – declared John XXIII a saint, after unanimous agreement by a consistory, or

meeting, of the College of Cardinals, based on the fact that he was considered to have lived a

virtuous, model lifestyle, and because of the good for the Church which had come from his

having opened the Second Vatican Council. He was canonized alongside Pope Saint John Paul II

on 27 April 2014. John XXIII today is affectionately known as the "Good Pope" and in Italian, "il

Papa buono".The Roman Catholic Church celebrates his feast day not on the date of his death (3

June), as is usual, nor his birth, or even on the day of his papal coronation (as is the case with

several canonized popes, such as John Paul II) but on 11 October – the day of the first session of

the Second Vatican Council. This is understandable, since the Council was his idea and it was he

that had convened it. On Thursday, 11 September 2014, Pope Francis added his optional

memorial to the worldwide General Roman Calendar of saints' feast days, in response to global

requests. He is, however, commemorated on the date of his death, 3 June, by the Evangelical

Lutheran Church in America and on the following day, 4 June, by the Anglican Church of Canada

and the Episcopal Church (United States).
