An invitation to Altar Servers for our Collaborative
One of the ways our children can begin participating in the Liturgy is by becoming an Altar Server! Altar Servers assist the priest at Mass and
provide a prayerful presence to our faith communities. It is a wonderful opportunity for children to serve our parishes and enrich their faith experience. This ministry is open to children in
grades 2 or above. Training will be provided. For St. Edward Parish either leave a message at the Parish Office
– 508-359-2633 or contact Fred Horgan directly – [email protected].
For St. Jude Parish either leave a message at the Parish Office – 508-528-0170 or contact Mary Sheedy directly–
Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members, Praised be Jesus Christ! The month of October is Pro-Life Month for the Catholic Church as well as other denominations and organizations. Respect for all life from the first moment of conception to the last moment of natural death is one of the basic moral teachings of our faith. Each of us is not only to respect life personally but give witness to this conviction as well. For the beginning of life, it is difficult to be hopeful living in this state from a political point of view. There is a ballot initiative that is presently, through volunteers, collecting signatures. The petition is for a proposed law that would require if a child is born alive, even in the case of an abortion procedure, all reasonable steps in keeping with good medical practice shall be taken to preserve the life of that child. This petition was available to sign at the end of the 8 AM Mass last week. Another way is the support of an Emergency Pregnancy Center. One is an organization known as Your Options Medical, an Emergency Pregnancy Center based in Revere. One of their strategies is deploying a mobile home offering free pregnancy testing with a nurse and a kind invitation to come in before making it to the abortion clinic the woman was intending to visit. For women who accept the offer, they are informed of the truth about their pregnancy. They presently have one mobile home and are on their way to a second. A way of supporting Emergency Pregnancy Centers is by obtaining a “Choose Life” license plate from the registry. The extra money from registration goes to these centers. Another is to support one directly, which I do with Your Options Medical. For during life, Pope Francis recently firmed up the church’s teaching on the death penalty. It is the second revision since the Catechism was first published. (The first was made by Saint John Paul II). How important this is since our collaborative has a prison located within its boundaries. Our faith teaches that it is a false notion that capital punishment deters crime. It rather teaches that all are made in the image and likeness of God. While sin makes this image harder to see, it nonetheless still exists. God is the giver of all life, and it should be left only up to God when it is given and taken. The government already has made itself the declarer of when life begins. It should not decide when life begins or ends. Physician Assisted Suicide is once again an issue in our Commonwealth. PLEASE SEE THE INSERT OF THIS WEEKEND’S BULLETIN. It is being done in the name of mercy, cost savings, and usefulness. Our faith asks us to put all suffering in the context of Jesus’ crucifixion, recognizing that it is a mystery and a call to help those in such a state, thereby allowing them to be appropriately cared for while bringing out the best in each of us. This is the purpose of palliative care and hospice. Pain is minimized and, when the time finally comes, death is met with dignity, with neither ending a life prematurely nor prolonging it unnecessarily. Pope Francis continuously warns us against the “throw away” culture we live in. Let us pray for the grace that we all respect life from the first moment of conception to the last moment of natural death.
Gratefully yours in Christ, Fr. Steve
from This Week In Church Signs: “Keep your words soft and sweet, you never know when you are going to have to eat

Next week’s second collection will support the Holy Father’s “Peter’s Pence” collection that provides funds for emergency and
disaster relief. This collection will also provide support to The Catholic University of America (CUA) that educates priests and lay
people for ministry and for the Inner-City Parishes of the

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
Have you ever thought about becoming Catholic? Would you like to know more about God and the Church? Or, are
you already baptized but still lack the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation?
If so, RCIA is for you! RCIA is a process of learning about and experiencing the Catholic faith with others in a
friendly, small-group setting. It can lead to full membership in the Church through the Sacraments, but is
also an open-ended process of asking questions and exploring.
Come, discover what you've been missing! If you are interested or know someone who might be, please
contact Fr. Gregory directly or call our parish offices.
A seven week faith based bereavement support group will begin on Thursday October 14 at St Jude’s church.
This peer support group is open to anyone who has experienced a recent loss and will include preparing for the holidays.
There is no charge for this program, however registration is required.
If you have any questions or would like to register as space is limited,
please call Nan Rafter at 774-571-0092.
QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK First Reading: Today’s creation account of man and woman is the foundation of our Judeo-Christian understanding of the covenant of marriage. When a male and a female marry, “the two of them become one body.” What do you see as some modern implications in this understanding of marriage? Second Reading: The author of Hebrews tells us that we are “brothers” with Jesus in our common experience of suffering and death. In what way do you find comfort in this idea? Gospel: Both in public with the Pharisees and later in private with the disciples, Jesus takes a strong stand on the sacred and unbreakable bond of marriage. How do you imagine the Pharisees and the disciples reacted to Jesus’ position? ©LPi

St. Paul speaks eloquently about the nature of sin and how we all suffer from its effects.
“I am carnal, sold into slavery by sin. What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I
hate…. For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh. The willing is ready at hand, but doing the
good is not. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want.”— Romans 7: 14b-15, 18-19

Grades 1-5 Family Faith Fundays
The grades 1-5 faith formation program has begun! We had two successful Family Faith Fundays over the last two weekends at St. Edward and St. Jude! We loved seeing so many of our families and meeting our new parishioners!
Thank you to all the families who were able to join us. Mark your calendars now for our next Family Faith Funday Dates!
St. Jude: 10/10 or 10/24 St. Edward: 10/31 or 11/7
Hope to see you there!
Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive after all the Masses for both parishes on Oct. 16 & 17.
When you see Knights in yellow vests that read “Helping People with Intellectual Disabilities,” you should smile. When these Knights are holding their bright cans and collecting donations around town, they are helping to
recognize the dignity of every person. For every donation, each donor is offered a piece of candy
by the Knight present, most commonly a Tootsie Roll. Because of these little gifts of appreciation, the “Campaign
for People with Intellectual Disabilities” has frequently referred to as the “Tootsie Roll Drive.”
The 16th annual Angel Run is back on Sunday, December 5th at 12:30 pm!

Prayer for Racial Healing* God of Justice, God of Mercy, God of Wisdom Triune God, in your Love you create all people in your image, without exception. Through your goodness, † Open our eyes to see the dignity, beauty, and worth of every human being. † Open our minds to understand that all your children are brothers and sisters in the same human family. † Open our hearts to repent of racist attitudes, behaviors, and speech which demean others. † Open our ears to hear the cries of those wounded by racial discrimination, and their passionate appeals for change. Strengthen our resolve † to make amends for past injustices and † to right the wrongs of history. Fill us with courage that † we might seek to heal wounds, † we might build bridges, † we might forgive, and, † we might accept forgiveness, and that † we might establish peace and equality for all in our communities. We ask all this in Jesus’ name. Amen. *Adapted from Catholic Charities USA Prayer for Racial Healing

Cafe Justo Coffee FOR SALE: It's MORE than fair trade!
Cafe Justo is a coffee collaborative of farmers. They are paid approximately $2.25 per

employees of Cafe Justo and its member cooperatives receive medical benefits and a pension plan, which is far better
than most Fair Trade models. Support Cafe Justo and support their farmers and their just model. Please visit ejcatholic.org and click the Cafe Justo: Click to order coffee tab on the home page. Coffee can either be delivered in
Medfield or waiting for you at Mass. Please email [email protected] with questions.
