Pastor’s Le er for the Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time B—October 3—Respect Life Sunday

In the gospel reading from Mark, Jesus is challenged by his usual foes, the Pharisees, to answer a ques on about divorce. Per-haps the Pharisees were looking for an answer to see which school of thought Jesus espoused, as the Pharisees were divided between what cons tuted grounds for divorce. Some thought that a husband could ini ate a divorce on pre y much any pre-text, while others said that divorce should be reserved for rare and serious reasons. What they all agreed upon, however, was that divorce was possible. A er all, it was said so in the Torah, in the Law of Moses.

Jesus' takes them by surprise, as he frequently does, by saying that there should be no divorce whatever. Using the Torah itself, Jesus quotes the book of Genesis , which describes the crea on of Eve from Adam. The symbolism of Eve taken from the rib, that which was closest to the heart of Adam, illustrates the equality of the sexes. As Adam beholds Eve as he wakes from his slumber, he says, "this at last is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh." Men and women are both made in God's image and likeness. Jesus then says that the two become one flesh, and what God has joined, no human being must separate.

Jesus is thus calling for marriage to be a voca on for the whole of life, as well as its indissolubility. It is this stable environment of a life lived in mutual self-giving that produces healthy families, and the children that come forth in this community of the fam-ily are nurtured and formed as members of the broader community of humanity.

Mark then has Jesus bless children, the offspring of husbands and wives. They are sacred to him, as are all people. Jesus reemphasizes the worth of all people, that everyone, from the least to the greatest, from the child to the Pharisee, are loved equally and totally by God, our loving Father.

On this Respect Life Sunday, we honor that call of Jesus to respect all life, in all stages of development. Everyone is loved by God, from the child in the womb, to the person on death row, from the elderly to the refugee, the immigrant to the teenager being bullied for being gay. All are loved, are unique, and call for our love, without condi on!

On this feast of St. Francis of Assisi, let us also be aware that all life, all crea on is a testament to its Author, the God of crea on. Let us also recommit ourselves to the task of respec ng our environment, and all creatures that share our world with us!

Have a great week! Fr. Buddy
