PARISH STAFF UPDATE

In these unprecedented !mes, in an effort to keep our parish solvent, I had to make some difficult decisions when it comes to our parish staff.

Maintenance Director—Mariusz Klimek—is no longer working for us and the posi!on of Administra!ve Assistant—Krystyna Maciorowski—was eliminated. I thank Krystyna and Mariusz for their years of work at St. Thomas Becket.

Our current staff is: Pat Reynolds—Business Director, Renata Sosin—Forma!on Coordinator, Liz Mika—Office Manager, Paula Kowalkowski and Adam Wojcik—Music Directors for English and Polish Masses respec!vely.

Also, as you can see on the next page, our deacon Tony Janno"a has officially re!red as of Sept 1, 2020. We are very grateful to Tony and his wife Doreen for their long years of service at St. Thomas Becket.

I’m happy to announce as well that Jack Sosin formally became enrolled in the Diaconate studies. With God’s grace he will be ordained as a Deacon in 2023 a=er comple!ng the necessary studies.

WIADOMOŚCI PARAFIALNE

W tych bezprecedensowych czasach, starając się zachować wypłacalność naszej parafii, musiałem podjąć kilka trudnych decyzji, jeśli chodzi o pracowników naszej parafii.

Sprzątanie kościoła - Mariusz Klimek - już u nas nie pracuje a stanowisko pomocy w biurze parafialnym - Krystyna Maciorowski - zostało zlikwidowane. Dziękuję Krystynie i Mariuszowi za wszystkie lata pracy w naszej parafii.

Nasz obecny personel to: Pat Reynolds - księgowy, Renata Sosin - koordynator ds. formacji, Liz Mika—prowadzenie biura i biuletyn, Paula Kowalkowski i Adam Wójcik - oprawa myzyczna Mszy Św. w jęz. angielskim i polskim.

Ponadto, jak widać na nastepnej stronie, nasz diakon Tony Janno+a przeszedł oficjalnie na emeryturę 1-go września 2020 r. Jesteśmy bardzo wdzięczni Tony'emu i jego żonie Doreen za ich wieloletnią służbę w w parafii Św. Tomasza Becketa. Tony był wyświęcony na diakona w Katedrze Świętej Rodziny w Tulsa, Oklahoma w 1980 roku i rozpoczął swoją pracę w naszej parafii w listopadzie w 1999 roku.

Jeszcze jedno ogłoszenie, Jacek Sosin formalnie wstąpił na studia diakonatu. Dzięki łasce Bożej, zostanie wyświęcony na diakona w 2023 roku po ukończeniu studiów.

Jestem wdzięczny za naszych pracowników i ich oddaną pracę na rzecz parafii Św. Tomasza Becketa.

AFTER 40 YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE

Tony was ordained a Permanent Deacon at Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1980. Deacon Tony and his wife Doreen began their ministry at St. Thomas Becket in November of 1999. Tony was involved in bap!smal prepara!on, bap!sms, weddings, wakes, funerals,

and the RCIA process. He was a member of the Parish Pastoral Council, Discernment Group and Spiritual Life Commi"ee and performed Communion Services as well as assisted at Masses. Tony was also involved in the Journey for Jus!ce ministry. His wife Doreen was a leader of the Children Liturgy of Word, co-chair of our monthly Hospitality, big part of the Fish Fry and picnic events, is a Eucharist Minister, Lector, and whatever else is going on in the parish Doreen is happy to help. Their service and commitment to our parish are blessings that are felt throughout our whole faith community. Congratula!ons, best wishes and many more healthy years to you both. On August 30th, our parishioner Jacek Sosin, was called by the Most Rev. John R. Manz to the Rite of Admission to Candidacy for Holy Orders (Order of Deacon) at the Chapel of the Immaculate Concep!on, University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein. He is one of 10 men to be formally enrolled as deacon candidates for the archdiocese’s Ins!tute for Diaconal Studies.

In the rite, Jacek Sosin publicly and freely answered two ques!ons from the bishop: “In response to the Lord’s call are you resolved to complete your prepara!on so that in due !me you will be ready to be ordained for the ministry of the Church?” and “Are you resolved to prepare yourself in mind and spirit to give faithful service to Christ the Lord and His body, the Church?”

Candidacy is the first official recogni!on by the Church of the posi!ve signs of his voca!on to the diaconate, which must be confirmed in the following years of forma!on—a period that includes spiritual forma!on and direc!on, theological reflec!on, pastoral ministry experiences, academic courses, human/personal development, field educa!on, internships, and much more.

His wife, Renata Sosin, also par!cipates in her husband’s journey. Her goals are to learn more about the diaconate, and to discern whether she can con!nue to support her husband through the coming years of forma!on, and possibly as an ordained deacon. In fact, wives are required to write a le"er to Cardinal Cupich that notes their free, informed consent to their husbands’ moving through the various stages of forma!on.

“Who is the deacon?” Diaconal ministry is a call to be configured to Christ the Servant—to stand in the midst of God’s people and be a sacramental sign for all to emulate. A deacon’s service includes a three-fold ministry: Service to the Word, Liturgy and Charity, and requires his ac!ve ministry in all three areas. This includes assis!ng at Mass and celebra!ng sacraments; evangelizing the Word by mouth and witness to the world; and caring for the poor, alienated, underrepresented, and neglected. Even in the workplace deacons are visible signs of Christ in the community.

Please keep Jacek Sosin, his wife Renata, all those in forma!on, and their families in your prayers that they might con!nue to answer God’s call in their lives.

Can Catholics be cremated?

As the prac!ce of crema!on becomes more and more common, it’s important to know what the Church asks of families who have chosen this for a loved one who has died. As the US Bishops observe on their website, “Ideally, if a family chooses crema!on, the crema!on would take place some !me a=er the Funeral Mass, so that there can be an opportunity for the Vigil for the Deceased in the presence of the body.” However, if crema!on takes places before the Funeral Mass, the cremated remains can be present at the Funeral Mass and the appendix to the Order of Chris!an Funerals provides adapta!ons for the texts and rituals that are part of the Funeral Mass and the Commi"al. The primary concern is that the cremated remains should be treated with the same respect given to any human remains. The Order of Chris!an Funerals instructs, “This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, and the care and a"en!on to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposi!on. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The prac!ce of sca"ering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains on the home of a rela!ve or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposi!on that the Church requires” (no. 417). It is becoming more and more common for parishes or diocese-sponsored cemeteries to include columbaria to house cremated remains in a way that respects Church teaching, allowing family and friends the opportunity to honor the remains of the one they have lost with dignity, reverence, and care. ©LPi
